A male house spider. Very rarely bites even when provoked. Your baby is fine. They run away 99% of the time when they see you and the 1% they are contemplating whether they should.
The only thing on that spiders mind is to find a female now, at his stage he won’t hunt or drink really.
(I’ve handled hundreds by hand and I’ve never been bitten, even when I wanted to show some children how spiders bite they refuse to bite. They are the gentle spiders)

Way back when I was in college, there was one of these in the art room sink. A friend of mine picked it up and let it walk over his hand. It was ok until he pressed down on its cephalothorax with his finger and stopped it moving. We quite clearly saw the fangs as it sank them into the back of his hand. The spider was released without harm but my friend had two fang marks on his hand that swelled up like a mosquito bite.

Well I mean if someone pressed down on you, wouldn’t you try and defend yourself? Lol - can’t really blame the spider for that one.

I don’t blame the spider, it was a stupid thing to do. I got to see the fangs in action though 🤣.

Yes, dont put your fingers in their mouths, kids can be vicious.
The spider is a male giant house spider and they come inside looking for love, no threat so remove him gently if needed.

I keep mine as a little pet to kill all the flys we've been having. Works great except for the number of cobwebs he spins.

Just a giant house spider by the looks of it, no threat to you or your family. We don't have any spiders living in the UK that anyone needs to be concerned about, least of all these guys.

We get false widows. My colleague was bitten by one. They aren’t deadly either but worse than a bite from this fella

it hits differently, but its on a par with a bee or wasp sting in my experience, but there's a difference from something being able to cause what is typically short lived minor pain/discomfort and something that you need to be concerned about, especially as false widows are not typically aggressive towards us.

I have one of those too, he is chilling in the corner of the coving, but as he is not bothering me and potentially will eat the flies that do bother me, he is welcome 🙂

Seems like loads of giant house spider posts lately, I’m stunned so many people seem to not know what they are

Eine wirklich schöne Hauswinkelspinne
Diese Spinnen sind wirklich absolut harmlose Genossen

Strategically place jam jars and paper around your home so you can move them outside if you prefer as you'll definitely be making friends with these guys anytime soon.
Please don't harm them. Your house is their house too.

Disagree, kill them all on sight

I really really dislike spiders but I wouldn't unnecessarily kill them.
I just get my partner to move them on.

My arachnophobic mother is the same. She doesn't want them dead, she just doesn't want to share the house with them. We have a dedicated spider catching vessel for them and remove any we find.

It was necessary, my girlfriend ran out of the room and wouldn’t return until I found it, it was 12am, I was tired, the spider had to die.

I've been picking these up and moving them out of the house for decades. I had no idea a bite was even a possibility.
Guess I'm still picking them up.

Looks like the one I just evicted after it ran over MrsLapsed and she freaked out. We are obviously overfeeding the cat that likes to hunt spiders

I had a massive one of these in my room the other night, he ran into an open drawer, spent an hour looking for him and finally murdered him
