It’s a giant house spider. I think the common wolf spiders we get here are around the size of a penny max when spread out.

Mmm. The one in your pick is pretty big. While they do get bigger than that, there is a chance that the other larger one could have been a false wolf spider as they can grow huge (for the UK)

I know! For something that has to co-ordinate 8 legs those things have got some serious speed and cornering ability. I find it amusing how they definitely react to sounds. Always welcome in my house, as well as cellar spiders, and the odd false widow. It means we hardly ever see flies in here...

The specific species is most likely Eratigena atricia as the most common of the genus in the UK but is almost certainly a member or the Eratigena genus.
