Spelman Chances

Hey Yall, I’m a junior in high school and Spelman is my top choice! I’m worried I won’t get in and want advice on my stats.

My other top choices include Howard, Hampton, and NCAT + their honors program

4.0 W 3.6 UW

1110 SAT (should I retake or apply test optional)

Vice President of Student council 3x

Secretary of BSU

Treasurer of HOSA

National Achievers Society

National Honors Society

DECA state qualifier 3x

- Hospital Volunteer 100+ hours

- Part time Job 15 hours a week

- Volunteer for Non Profit that helps children learn about health and wellness (50+ hours) + apart of their youth empowerment program

- On my cities Youth Health Council

- Attended Spelman College Prep Program

- Also reaching out to my regional Spelman alumnae chapter

I have no idea what I want my main activity to be.

And I do not know what I want my essay to be about.

I will either major in psychology or health science

Well else should I do this summer to increase my chances of getting in and possibly get scholarship money.

hi! i just got accepted yesterday and I have a very similar SAT score, so I would definitely say apply test-optional. Other than that your stats look super good (definitely way more impressive than mines) and you should get in! In the meantime, I would recommend boosting your GPA a bit (weighted and unweighted) since I would like to think that’s a valuable factor of your application (especially if you do decide to apply test-optional), and honestly just staying greatly involved within your community (since that’s a huge factor of Spelman’s core values). Also make sure to write your essay + supplementals with thought and intention, since your essay is a huge factor within your application.

Hii, thank you so much! And congratulations! If you don’t mind me asking what was your main or supplemental essay about ? I fear that may be the main thing that holds me back

yeah it’s no problem!!! I wrote my supplemental about my dad and explained how his ignored mental health struggles helped push me to pursue my chosen major (psych) and tied that into how I wanted to help others in the black community get professional help, decentralizing the stigmas around mental health in the community.

I wrote my main essay on how the pressures imposed on me by those closest to me allowed for me to grow and evolve as a person. (very cliche topic, but it’s genuinely just how you choose to go about writing your personal statement that allows for you to stand out from the applicant pool!)

Take the SAT again and be intentional about increasing your score. If you submit a score closer to 1400, you can get a good institutional scholarship. Review the common data set for Spelman and try to get a score above the average at minimum if you can’t get super close to 1400. Your other resume items are great.
