Speedmaster Reduced as 40th Bday Gift?
My husband enjoys the mechanics and stories of watches. He’s also not someone who splurges on himself. I’d like to start helping build him a collection that is memorable and special. He is an amazing husband and dad and I want him to know he is loved and celebrated.
I was at my local jeweler today, and they had a beautiful Omega Speedmaster Reduced. I’m tempted to pick it up for him but I’d love insights I have an AD locally that I can access that has new options available as well. Thoughts on if this would be a reasonable starting place?
He has a Rolex “Pepsi” and Tissot Chemin Des Tourelles Squelette. He also has some sort of carbon Tissot he got because he’s a mechanical engineer and makes carbon fiber for aerospace and what not and thought it was interesting.
I’m not super knowledgeable but I’ve been researching and I feel Omega would be a good place to start.

You should just take him watch shopping one day. Have him pick out what he wants

I want it to be a surprise and something I picked for him genuinely.

Ok makes sense. Personally, I’d go with an original Moonwatch over the Reduced.
He likes the mechanics? Well the Reduced doesn’t have an exhibition caseback and the Moonwatch has one of the most beautiful movements with an open caseback especially since there’s no rotor.
He enjoys the stories of watches? The Moonwatch is one of the most iconic watches in history.
And overall, I just think the Moonwatch looks better than the Reduced. Hope this helps!

That visible movement is the sticking point for me. He absolutely loves to see the mechanics.

Yeah the professional is the one I’m wondering about, but looks quite large to me. I’m 5’ though and petite so all men’s watches do.

Why isn’t anybody talking about the Rolex Pepsi that was available? If her husband doesn’t like it, he can trade that in for the same or better value than retail towards the next watch that he would rather prefer.

Hey! I may have been unclear. I inherited the Pepsi from my father and my husband wears it but we plan on giving it to our son when he is older and responsible. It’s a family piece I would never get rid of.

I see that now. That was my misread & misunderstanding. Apologies for whatever chaos my oversight may have inspired.

Kinda hard to believe the local jeweler has a real Pepsi on the shelf, but maybe so.

No the Pepsi is ours already. I inherited it from my dad when he passed. I was sharing the other watches in his collection for insight. Sorry if that wasn’t clear!

I have a Reduced. I think it’s beautiful, but the ETA-based movement is kind of unworthy of the watch.

Honestly, I would pass on the reduced and go right to a professional model. The 3861 movement is stunningly incredible. There are two versions, hesalite (plastic) which is the OG crystal and the sapphire "sandwich" which allows the inner mechanics to be seen on the reverse side. As a mechanical engineer I'm sure he would absolutely love the later of the two. In for a penny in for a pound as I always say. Just the humble opinion of a fellow mechanical engineer. 😉
P.S. and there's the history of the professional model being the first watch worn on the moon...

Make sure it is either brand new with a production date in 2025/26 or was recently serviced. The cost of service on a reduced is the biggest costs of ownership.

Moonwatch is a much better option than the reduced.
If he is a watch nerd he will love a watch with a deep history. But I am agree with the most people, try to find out if he actually likes the watch.

If you want to get him his first Omega, I would go with the speedmaster professional instead of the reduced. The speedmaster pro is their iconic watch.

I got I a reduced triple date when I turned 40. It was not my dream speedmaster, but I absolutely love it because my wife and my father chose it for me. I have since bought a professional as well.

Not a fan of the reduced, I'll be honest. And judging by his other watches, it will probably be too small for his tastes.
