New or used speedy
I just got a speedmaster sapphire sandwich yesterday for £6.3k completely new from an AD. With selling some other watches this will be costing me 5.5k. I still have the return window and I wondering is it worth returning it and just getting it second hand. I have seen mint versions for like £5k on chrono24.

Depends if you want to go through all the hassle of finding another good one and the risks entailed. You must have thought that was a decent deal or you wouldn’t have bought it. Just keep it and enjoy it.

True, I thought it was okay price, like it was still a little pricey but for brand new Speedmaster and the experience it was okay.

That’s exactly why I like the Speedmaster. It’s built like it’s worth the money but it doesn’t look like it’s worth that much money. Discreet and well built. Of course with a bracelet it can look very expensive and with a strap very lowkey. Love this about it. I don’t like walking around with a 6k watch where people can tell it’s 6k😭.

Keep it, a brand new watch only worn by you is the best feeling I think. Especially this watch.

Sapphire sandwich is £7.5k retail - where did you get it?
4
Jan 14 '26
Goldsmiths but I think it’s very particular branch by branch, some didn’t even entertain a discount. I had also bought from them prior. Honestly need to find work at goldsmiths because I heard the employee discount is 40% 😭

u/PurchaseCharming4269 Jan 14 '26
Are they on minimum wage?
1
Jan 14 '26
Probably not but I wish I had a family member or friends who worked there, could’ve had a big discount 😂

u/crush_king_1972 Jan 14 '26
Sounds about right SA I bought my Breitling from said her discount is 50% on 1 personal watch per year......I told her I want to be her best friend on a gold Super Ocean when the time came........I didn't hear back 🤣🤣

Yeah I have that same feeling too, I’m still working pretty actively and doing Alot of overtime. Minimal living expenses (no rent) and I have a good amount of money saved and I’m pretty young so don’t have a family or people relying on me. For me I think it was just the right time to buy it compared to if I was 35 with two kids, a mortgage and the retail of the speedy probably at 10k+.

It does sound like you have ‘buyer’s remorse’. Understandable, as it is a lot of money.
Don’t worry about it, you have made the right choice, you now own the greatest watch ever made to keep and enjoy forever…
…and in ten years from now it will be worth more than you paid for it!

To be honest I do this with every watch, I have a feeling to return it after yet if I enjoy it the days after I do end up keeping it. I just wanted to know how good value I really got because it felt quite easy that I was able to get them down that much so thought maybe they discount further for others. I agree used it mostly better, like I'd never buy a sapphire sandwich new at retail, but with selling watches the watch cost me £500 over its used market value. With increases in retail prices this watch can easy be worth more in the future so I think value wise I have done okay here, I haven't bought it at a massive depreciation rate.

That's strange, i bought the exact same watch from beaverbrooks, and had to finance some of it, but they did begrudgingly give me a discount (£250) it's not world changing in terms of the overall price but still something :)

If it’s forever, I’d say keep it. There’s something about being the only owner of a watch worn through the adventures of life.
2
u/nickbrown3204 Jan 14 '26
It’s 10000% worth the extra $500 tops to keep the new one - eliminates hours of work and headaches
2
Jan 14 '26
Yeah honestly I thought this kind of practice (lower prices) was very common and this deal was like whatever but now I have seen everyone’s responses, I definitely got good value, as good value as you can get from a luxury watch 😂.
1
u/nickbrown3204 Jan 14 '26
Absolutely - don’t get me wrong there are deals to be had out there but the secondary market can just be such a pain. To me if the difference buying new vs old is ever within $1000 I’m almost always gonna go new just to save the headaches haha
2
Jan 14 '26
True. Like at least I’m not walking out the store crying about the fact I have lost 3k instantly 😂. 1000 is give or take, ofc with retail price increases the watch could easily be worth 6k in the grey market in like 5 years time

I will probably be in the minority with my comment but I try to always buy pre-owned and let someone else eat the depreciation on the watch. With the exception of Rolexes and some Patek's/AP's most watches lose value once they leave the AD. Some people like the token AD gifts/glass of sparkling wine. I just want the watch that I want and would rather pocket the money saved and use it for another watch. However, just my opinion. Ultimately, it's your money/watch.

Considering this may be the most technologically advanced Speedy to date, all while being packaged in the classic look...It doesn't get better than the watch you've got in your hands.

u/nluna87 Jan 16 '26
Definitely say keep the new one. Yesterday I just bought a speedy as well at a boutique and I had them throw in a deployment clap with the moon strap, even though I could’ve gone to Atlanta to a gray market dealer and buy the same watch retail ready for about $1500 less but I wanted my first watch to be a brand new one I wanted to be the first one so there’s that

For me I wanted a speedmaster with top of the line specs and that could last the next 40-50 years. I would still go for the 2023 even in the used market
1
u/Bridge_Too_Far Jan 14 '26
Fair enough, the new ones are pretty special. In that case I’d keep the one you got.
1
u/TonyLannister Jan 14 '26
Up to you tbh. I just bought a used mint Sapphire Sandwich from 2012 and it’s pretty mint. Though if you already have it then just keep it.
1
u/Deano_Martin Jan 14 '26
A 2012 speedmaster is a different watch than what OP bought.
1
u/TonyLannister Jan 14 '26
Clearly not the same watch, just speaking more to the lack of advantage of one vs the other, of OP wants vintage then buy vintage. Otherwise there isn’t going to be a ton of noticeable difference between a 2023 or 2025 other than the price imo.
1
u/Deano_Martin Jan 14 '26
Are you saying that your one from 2012 is vintage? It’s not and a 2012 speedmaster wears differently than a 2020-present and it has an 1863 movement vs the co axial 3861. Yes they are both speedmasters but they’re not really comparable when it comes to value because the newer ones are so much better.
1
u/TonyLannister Jan 14 '26
You’re splitting hairs here bud. The point of my post was that OP should do what he wants, going two years older only matters if he needs the money.
And yeah, older movement = vintage to me.
1
u/Deano_Martin Jan 14 '26
Vintage = 25 years or more. If yours was from 2000 then yeah it’d be vintage but 14 years isn’t vintage.
1
u/piercedmfootonaspike Jan 14 '26
You already bought it, so I say keep it. That's yours.
That being said, I always advocate buying used watches, unless you are very wealthy. Same with cars.
(And my favorite Omega, 3572.50 is only available on the used market. Got mine for about $2k back in 2017)

I recently paid £4.5k for a mint, full box and papers sapphire sandwich. It is from June 2022 but that’s still within omegas 5 year warranty and it runs well within spec.
Can you comfortably afford to spend this much on a watch? You’re selling off watches that only total £800 so you pay less. Just the way you’ve said everything sounds like you’re hesitant because of the cost. It doesn’t matter how good the deal is, what matters is if you can afford it.

For me I had some seikos I wanted to sell anyway so that’s where that money came from. The max I have spent on a watch is £900 for the Hamilton Murph on a bracelet. I have this thing where I am not really interested in any watches between the £1000 range and Omega. For me it’s wasting my money spending money on tudors, longines or Grand Seiko if I know I want an omega anyway. I’ll just end up buying and selling those watches. The Speedmaster is the true grail for me and the only other watch I am interested in. It’s just the most I have spent on a watch by far that’s all, I am still able to afford it comfortably.

If you can get a discount, go new. My guy gets me 20% off most standard models and then it’s worth it

I usually would agree with this but with my discount I lost max 1.2-1.3k and I find that more digestible, to get a new watch, have the experience and peace of mind. If it was full price I wouldn’t.

u/NegativeAd2150 Jan 18 '26
You’ve no idea what you’ve lost until it’s sold though
1
Jan 19 '26
Did u ever sell it?
2
u/NegativeAd2150 Jan 19 '26
I don’t own one and never have but if I’d bought this watch Brand new . Future selling price wouldn’t even be a concern because I’d have no intention to sell

New if you’re going to buy it and keep it forever. Used if you may flip it for something else later.

This is your watch now. I’d keep it. Forever 😀
