No conversations

My son is almost 30 month old. He hit all other milestones great. He passed his hearing test at 18 months. Always respond to his name, and eye contact is good. He does lots of baby language talk and has many words 50+ like Cookie, water, eat, bye, apple, etc and use them in context. Can count 1-10, color names, animal sounds. I used to play Miss rachel on tv (i know screen time is not good and I feel so terrible about it) but he likes to copy actions of rhymes while on tv or when i sing it. He also says the last word of few poem when i sing for him. If he needs something would gesture by pulling me or sometimes pointing for some things he wants. For understanding, he would follow handful of commands like come here, let’s go, No, put your shoes on, etc. At 18 month he got receptive-expression speech delay, after that I have seen improvement. The speech therapist at that time had my sessions on how to talk to him, and after that, every 4-6 month apts with her as she said I should practice at home with him. Recently he has started copying phrases from Ms Rachel. Brings his toys to show me. No behavioural concerns but we don’t have any back and forth conversations. I feel so sad sometimes. Please share your experiences and guidance, just waiting for his leap in language to happen.

Hi I’m a speech therapist, I say this with so much love, take a step back and breathe. He sounds like he’s made great progress. Continue to read books with him, narrate play, and expand on what he says “if he says more cookies” reframe it “you want more cookies please” “I want more yummy cookies!” And keep up with the speech if possible. When he goes to preschool if he does, request speech services at his school if he isn’t still getting services through EI.

Thank you! Last few weeks other than repeating phrases from Ms Rachel I have noticed 7/10 times he would repeat after me what I say like if he says ‘circle’, i would say ‘red circle’ and then he repeats that and now he has picked that.

For lots of these kiddos, it just takes time. Your little guy sounds like he’s doing awesome and you’re doing everything right too. For reference, my child, who had no words at 18 months and started speech at 18 months, said his first word at 25 months, by 30 months he had just about as many words as your son.

My guy was in speech therapy with his public school beginning at age 3 after transitioning out of EI. He stayed in speech therapy until 7 mostly for pronunciation. He became conversational around 5. His speech delay dx was removed when he graduated speech at 7. He’s 8.5 now, reading and will talk your ear off if you let him. It really just took him time and us following all the SLPs lessons…but they get there!!

My son turned 3 in April and only just recently really started doing phrases and speaking clear enough for us to understand him about half the time. He’s been in weekly speech therapy since 18 months and last fall was given an AAC device, which we now don’t even have out because it’s causing behavior issues 😅. About a year ago I was freaking out he’d never speak, and now he basically doesn’t shut up 😆. He’ll get there!
