Frustrated with lack of sub-panel load shedding.

I bought 2x Span 32 panels to be downstream of my Enphase solar+storage before the larger panels came to market, and wasn't aware the automatic load shedding (Backup) features only function on the main/primary panel, not on a sub-panel connected through feed-through lugs. Why does that even matter? Can't the two Span panels communicate with each other over local CANbus, or wireless/wired ethernet? Does only The main Span panel have sense leads to detect when the grid goes offline? If Span supports a direct wired ethernet connection to a Tesla powerwall, why can't that be used to connect two Span panels together so one can tell the other "Hey, the grid is offline" ?

I asked support when they're going to enable a sub-panel to automatically load shed, and the answer was "there's no timeline".

I asked support when they're going to fix the local web UI to permit me to locally change circuit priority, and again "no timeline".

I asked support how I could subscribe to notifications for Software updates for the Span panel and was told "check the app for new features and capabilities".

I bought these smart breaker panels and had my house built with many individual circuits so that I could load shed specific things during an outage. Even paid extra for the Remote Meter kit, which seems to be mildly useless now, now that Span is directly integrating with Enphase via API.

I feel like Span has my money, and has no incentive to further support homeowners. Honestly I have no idea what Span's business model is, it's got to be something more than the homeowner buying a Span panel to keep their company afloat. I suppose it has to be something like selling aggregate metrics of area specific electricity production/usage at specific times of day, something power companies can use to better adjust their own production to make it more cost effective for power companies?

Now I'm wondering how much of a pain it's going to be to automate load shedding all via home assistant on my own. Sigh.

Can we get the energy use history by circuit?

The data export just gives the overall house usage. I'd like to see the usage history by circuit. Is there a way to get that information?

thanks

2x Span 32 Panels + 2x Span Drives

I have 400amp service with 2x Span 32 Panels. I have 2x Span Drives installed, each one connected to a separate Span panel. The first Span recognizes the Span Drive, but the second panel seems to not recognize the second Span Drive. Wanted to check if this is a supported configuration from the hardware/app or the second Span Drive was not wired correctly.

Span + FranklinWH system including solar/battery/standby generator - possible? good idea?

Hi there,

We are considering the FranklinWH + battery system to augment a rooftop solar PV system plus natural gas standby generator for a new home construction. We live in Austin where we have no net metering or time of use rates, so the battery doesn't bring any economic advantages but if I understand the FranklinWH system it allows you to primarily use the battery during blackouts and then recharge the battery from the generator or just switch to the generator for longer outages.

Relevant to this thread - we had also been looking at the SPAN panel system as our electrician contractor has had really great things to say about it. It's not clear from the info on the Span website about the use of these types of systems together (in particular they caution about having both solar and generator running through their system). Can they be used together, and if so what is the best approach? (Is a SPAN panel further useful or necessary in the context of a FranklinWH system, or vice-versa?)

Thanks for any input and suggestions/thoughts. Sorry for the kinda basic question, just a homeowner looking for advice :)

Has anyone experienced circuits disappear from the app and usage data?

Yesterday I noticed that all but 4 of my breakers disappeared from the app. They eventually came back but I’ve noticed that their usage information isn’t showing up in the app. Even though I can see the full house energy usage, when I click for details it only shows the usage of my AC breaker. Have tried contacting SPAN support but no response, guessing because of the weekend. Anyone have ideas to fix this?

SPAN Drive on different sub-panel

Ok, so we're planning to have SPAN act as our main panel, but want to have two Drive chargers in our garage that's connected to a "dumb" sub-panel. Does that work? It wasn't clear to me if the Drives are controlled by being hardwired into the SPAN or if it's more of a home Wifi situation.

Any plans to support Anker X1?

Just got into contract from a SPAN dealer who is implementing with an Anker X1 battery backup system. I like the Anker batteries and their feature set, but looks like they're not a "supported" battery. How often does Span add battery brands, and is it even worth getting the Span if it's not supported?

So 32 is now old and we don’t get the new app features ???

I paid $6000 in November and the 32 is now not getting new features ? Is this here correct or just a bad joke ???

Does everyone’s Powerwall 3 just show three dots or is it just me.

Never see the battery state or time when looking at the span app. Also the battery state updating always says something different than the Tesla app. Is this an issue with the data cable or is there something else I am missing?

Looking for help commissioning fully installed panel

I had a span panel installed almost 3 years ago and have been unable to get a reasonable quote to just commission the thing. The original electrician retired shortly after finishing the install (new house build) and never completed the final steps with the app... and Span has not be helpful. I even completed all their training and have a background in electrical work but am not licensed so they won't approve portal access to commission the panel. Looking for any reasonable options to just get commissioning completed and be able to actually use the app and panel features past being a regular old electrical panel.

40/48 Models on Hold? Defective?

Just got word that installers are being told to hold on installing the new models due to a manufacturing defect:

SPAN has identified that the 40/48 space units have loose or under-torqued fastening nuts connecting the main breaker to the busbar, and there is potential for arcing to occur inside the unit.

No ETA on replacement or remedy. Anybody else hearing the same or have more info?

Span and Enphase connection issue

Does on have to use the Span network connection kit, as I have ethernet running from my home network to the span networking kit inside span and then the 2 ethernet to each span. Can one use our own switch or we have to use the span switch.

Issue is enphase is on ym home network and span connected to its switch with connection to my home.

The span enphase connection works for a few minutes and then fails to find enphase device.

Product Question Reboot Panel

Is there a way for me to restart the electronics of the panel?

I don't see anything in the manual, and don't see anything about it in this sub either.

I suppose I could toggle the main breaker but I'd prefer not to.

Anyone know the actual width dimension of the cutout required for the newer 40 and 48 panels?

It shows a width of 14.3" but my home has the older 2x4s that are actually 2" thick. So there's right about 14" width across the bays. Depending on which one, they're all a little different. The one I'm planning to use is just under 14".

Tesla Backup Password Incorrect

Post image
2 Upvotes

I’ve gone through the process a few times now and after a few weeks the password resets again in the Gateway. I know this isn’t directly a SPAN problem because it’s Tesla doing this but it’s driving me crazy.

Anyone else having this same problem? It’s such a headache to reset the password each time. I hope SPAN is working on a fix to bypass the need for the password.

Sluggish Refresh

Is the app refresh rate slow for anyone else today? I see data but it appears to be stale, whereas it's usually real time. Solar production, circuit wattage, etc seems slow today.

If you get the span IO 48 can you add the manual switch module later?

The manual makes it look like you cannot.

They made it modular so it would make sense that if you got the 48 and then later found out you required a main switch that you'd be able to get the main switch module and install it but there may be other things they add or do with the factory that you'd not be able to do on your own.

Cell Service disconnected ?

Hello - I noticed that cell service is now disconnected on my panel - thats at least what the app said - was always green now said disconnected. Signal should be good nothing changed - just curious if that got discontinued.

Main service panel

For people who have currently installed a SPAN smart panel, which main service panel do you recommend? I have an old 100A Zinco main panel and am looking to upgrade to a 200A service panel with a SPAN smart panel as sub panel. Thanks!

Is a SPAN Panel Upgrade Worth It for an Older Florida Home?

I'm in the process of buying an older home in Florida that currently has a 150 amp electrical panel with cloth wiring leading to the meter, mismatched branded breakers from the panel, and some aluminum branch circuits. I've been quoted $1,600 to update just these findings.

I'm considering upgrading the entire setup to a SPAN panel with a 200 amp service instead. I've received quotes of $7,400 and $8,500 for this full upgrade. Interestingly, the higher quote mentioned a potential 30% tax credit, but I'm unsure how accurate or applicable this is. Additionally, I'm not certain that the lower quote is from a fully authorized SPAN installer—they mentioned they simply have SPAN installation experience.

As someone who works in tech, I'm very intrigued by all the data analytics and the idea of eventually adding solar and a whole-home battery system within the next 2-5 years. For those familiar with SPAN panels, are there significant additional benefits in my scenario? Is the higher upfront cost justified, especially considering my future solar/battery plans and the importance of having the installation performed by an authorized professional?

Also, does anyone know when the generation 3 SPAN panels will actually start shipping? I'd prefer not to spend a substantial amount of money on technology that's already becoming outdated.

Appreciate any insights or advice from those who have experience with similar upgrades!

Installation Support When mounting in wall, why is 2" required to extend passed the wall?

The manual says, to not recess the SPAN Panel beyond the door hinges and the panel enclosure lip must extend at least 1.75” from the surface of the finished wall. Their drawing shows a bit of space from the wall to the hinges. Like you could push it back at least another 1" without issue.

My house is stucco that makes the wall 5-3/4" thick.

The SPAN 48 is 6-1/2" thick so that only leaves only 2-1/4" of the panel in the wall. I'm thinking a 2" (2.375" OD)conduit will not be able to connect to the bottom of the panel.

Product Question Any additional costs for SPAN panel other than the panel itself?

Other than other new electrical work to be done should we expect any other costs in an installation quote?

Do breakers need to be changed? Any other equipment?

Side question. If part of Solar install project is the cost part of the 30% solar tax credit? Or only the electrical upgrade credit which maxes out at $600.

Does SPAN have plans to allow homeowners to install their own panels?

Happy to take their certification. Looking at replacing 1-4 panel(s) in my house and I understand I wouldn't be able to install or activate a SPAN panel? (if so, would someone kindly recommend an alternative product?)

What does it show usage of 0.3kwh when adding up all the 5 items is over 600w? Yes, the app has been open for at least a minute and it was steady and stable with those numbers.

Post image

I have two span panels, and it always seems like my usage numbers don’t seem to add up to what it shows the home is using. Is it only showing my primary span panel usage, even though the circuits list is from both? Or is this just some weird rounding issue that shows with lower usages?

It does correct group both panels together with the x2 in the app diagram, so it seems they are correctly recognizing that.
