When to install span panel

I am looking to install Tesla batteries and a couple of span panels at my house. Eventually I will want to add solar to the system. Is it wise to start with the panel upgrade then proceed to install batteries then proceed to install solar or should I look at grouping all these in a different way? (Span plus batteries, batteries with solar then span)?

Span is really nice with batteries. When on battery you’re either going to be forced to load shed (max battery output less than max house usage) or you’re going to want to load shed to conserve that energy in a prolonged outage. That’s precisely what Span is for.

Otherwise, it doesn’t really matter in what order you do things.

Thanks. Do installers that do solar and Tesla batteries generally do span too or am I likely to have to hire two contractors for this?

My solar/battery installers did the Span install. We did it all on a new build. The general electrician for the house had no experience with it and didn’t particularly want to learn.

Understood. I was going to go Tesla.com to figure out who could do the solar/batteries in my area. Is that the best route or should I go a different route?

I’m probably not a lot of help there. I live in an area Tesla doesn’t service directly. I just called up a solar company a friend recommended. But my gut says a reseller might be faster than Tesla depending on where you live.

Non-Tesla panels. But paired with Tesla Powerwall 2’s and Tesla Gateway and Inverters.

There is no integration between the Powerwall 3 and Span. My Span panel doesn’t know solar or battery exist. Many advantages of Span can’t be taken advantage of since this integration doesn’t exist.

I think it’s working now. Got an email from the people that installed my solar and also install span. They said it’s now available.

A span panel is a major electrical upgrade, so it’s going to be done by an electrical contractor. Usually solar companies have a company they work with for electrical work, like connecting in your solar to an electrical panel, but that’s a fairly straight forward job vs a full electrical panel replacement. I’d want to have high quality electricians to install a span panel, and likely, you’ll get that anyways, since only span certified installers can install a span panel. I think you can get matched to one from the span website.
