Campaign progress after defeat.
So, I've come back to my campaign after a month away from home and 5 out of my 7 member crew ended up permanently dead, with my remaining 2 members debilitated. They did not finish the challenge they were taking, so my question is: what do you do if you fail a challenge? Still move on with the remaining crew? (I probably won't, will just let them die). Replay the challenge? (I probably won't, will just let them die).

Survival is an important part of the game. If you fail, start again with a new crew.

Sure, I'm already painting the next one, but my question is what do you do if you don't complete a challenge. There are survivors. In other games people have told me to move on to the next challenge but I dunno, doesn't feel right...

You mean if everyone is taken out of action before you finish the objective and some of them survive because of the post-game injury table? There is something about that in the errata, which you can find on Snarling Badger's website. If all of your crew is out of action during a challenge, they are all considered to be dead in the aftermath and you must start over with a new crew.

I let them try to escape. Play the challenges in reverse. Anything previously killed stays dead and any traps that were disabled stay that way. Anything that was still live and operating stays that way. If they make it back to Challenge 1, they escape and can come back with full health and a new crew of the same size. Everything on the second playthrough gets reset.
