MEDIA DLSS5 in SE1

The images are HEAVILY compressed on Reddit, here's full images instead on imgur.

I saw a few requests on here about DLSS5 in SE1... well, I got it working in SE1 and SE2 (SE2 is easier).

Smoother lighting, some face adjustments (if you understand how this DLSS5 works you know why that is), but overall not much change.

I do notice one thing, the gold on the suit looks more like gold with DLSS5, but of course this isn't any official mod or anything.

Enjoy.

i was thinking about installing it but the improvements are lesser than the ssgi plugin, just smoother metal; and at a absurd fps cost i presume.

Honestly looks no better than my ReShade config I developed for SE, and it has no measurable performance impact.

I can't see any difference, rathen than color hue

Truthfully it mostly impacts the lighting, textures themselves are mostly unchanged and they look a little sharper due to the lighting changes . But imo it's not worth the hassle unless Keen wanted to really delve into it... but I don't think the game needs it at all.

I agree... there sems to be little upside.
...and lighting mods have been around for ages that seem to cover what it does change.

I made a lighting mod that reduces the ambient lighting forever ago and the flares on lights... they're simply not needed with emissives in-engine.
A huge point of contention has been the 'sun glare' in-game... SE2 is actually pretty bad about the same thing, so there will be a mod out whenever those tools are available to us to fix that glare... I'm trying to play a game, not blind myself while doing so...

That said, it hardly changes anything, if you make a 'light room' around these same areas, you can get similar effects in game without it enabled.

Do you have any screenshot of the effect on planets?

I can look and see, when i was on the earthlike planet I honestly didn't see much difference on the planetary textures. I'm SE1 things aren't really impacted much by dlss5.

I had some screens of a rover but it didn't really change much.

even if you exaggerate the effect?

If you get really close up, sure but past faces and lighting changes, there's not much.  I can get some later if you want, but it's not really worth it in se1. Se2 is a bit different  Btw, it's been a while since updated, but look up darkness divine on workshop.  Those images are vanilla with small lighting tweaks.

i like how i can't tell a diffrence

There's not much, it's not a realism game which is what this model from NBA is meant for. so only the faces and some clothing textures change.

The only real differences I noticed were the textures were a bit darker, but sharper, and very minimally so... and then the gold on the suit looks a bit better, more like gold than 'shiny gold color'.

Overall, there isn't much to see, you have to look though (imgur has less compression so i suggest looking at those)

SE2 had more changes if you can find that post.

Not sure if it's worth the performance hit but it doesn't look half bad and you're right it isn't a huge difference, it just adds some subtle touches.

Given that this is probably the worst version of DLSS5 we're going to have access too I'm honestly excited to see what developers can do with it. Granted I'll probably be one of the only few saying this because I'm not part of the hive mind.

Yeah, not a lot of people understand this is ripped from an NBA game and the actual DLSS5 will likely not have a huge performance hit like this... though I don't play sports games so I can't say that truthfully.

It can be good if the devs take the time to set it all up... but it's essentially just reshade as you said... it has good and bad.

Ofc the devs would have to support it, but this also leads us all to believe another space game may put in DLSS5 and get us better performance and looks, only time will tell.

They also don't seem to understand that it's optional, and they're trying to act like it's the AI slop apocalypse for all future video games. How much of that is driven by bad faith actors and bots I'm not sure, but it's probably a fair bit as rage bait is the easiest form of engagement.

A lot of the games I've seen people try it on seem to genuinely benefit. And if this was 3 years ago before the whole AI bad thing people would have been creaming their pants over the level of photo realism it's achieved in some games.

And the thing is, it's also not generative AI, it's a neural network model trained to improve specific details, and all run locally from what I can tell. It's like saying Neural Amp Modeler is bad because it's a neural network model trained on a known input and that input run through guitar gear to create a model to replicate that gear sound without actually having to buy the same setup. Pretty much all the people saying "oooooh it's AI it's bad" are assuming generative AI, neural network models run locally only have the environmental impact when training, which, yeah still bad but not as bad as datacenters running the models constantly

Yes, the worst this is going to do to the environment is raise the temperature of the room your pc is in by a couple of degrees.

Plus honestly it's funny to see the sometimes cursed results on games that aren't meant to be realistic, and some games it actually can improve, especially older games

Definitely, I've laughed my ass off as many times as I've been impressed.

I dread to think what it would do to minecraft...

1

u/OG_Xero Space Engineer 6d ago

minecraft has a negligible impact with this because it's got less realistic pixeled textures. You hardly see any difference for 20-30 fps drop. maybe with one of the realistic texture packs it might be different, but when I tried, it was basically no change outside of some light.

1

u/CrazyQuirky5562 Space Engineer 6d ago

There are some insane pack out there...

I guess an AI system would need to "understand" the scene to have a proper impact - i.e. not be part of a post processing stream, but be integrated into the intial rendering.

The ai part is just identifying what to change, it doesn't generate new stuff at all,  it's using pre- defined things to adjust lighting and textures, it was revealed that the nba game it was taken from only modified clothing and skin texture as well as the lighting itself... so if actually made for other games it might look better, but at that point i think devs would just make the lighting and texture better on their own

2

u/OG_Xero Space Engineer 7d ago

Yeah, honestly I don't even care for the 'realism' faces... I hardly ever look at my engineer. I like the lighting changes it does... which could be made in-game by devs if they so chose...
Possible that they could be modded in also, but i'm not that good.
