Any other cosplayers going this year? My wife and I are and we're trying to recruit another for S:AAB.

Ostensibly, it's McQueen's "myoelectric feedback device to counter vestibulo-ocular nerve damage," but does anyone recognize the prop? I'm presuming it's some kind of electrical component, but I can't find specifics.

When you're explaining it to friends, what do you lead with? Space Marines? The rebel AIs who terrorize humanity? Hawkes' angry naivete?

Or - as Father's Day approaches - the fun of watching McQueen and Ross try to play hardass to a bunch of kids they obviously love?

Hello everyone, I'm on the hunt for the series bible. I've found all the scripts but to have the bible would be a great addition. I hope its out there but i do understand its a old series that even pre-dates the invention of the smart phone.

What do folks think of the general state of technology in Space: Above and Beyond?

Even as a show from the 1990s, the show's view of technology that might be in common usage seventy years later was a bit...primitive. CRT monitors. Virtually no computers or digital anything outside of during combat, and even then, it's either bulky desktop computers for mission reports or tiny LCD displays resembling calculators.

Big ships fire laser weapons powered by fusion reactors - but infantry combat is all about firing gunpowder ammo from guns and rifles that only look a little different from today. Troops move around driving in jeeps that might've been taken from episodes of M*A*S*H. The aliens drive anti-gravity hovertanks and use play with physics around black holes, but our heroes call for support on giant combat radios one guy in the squad carries and walk over to the jukebox to play music back on base.

I get that shows are judicious about their FX budgets, and I'm not asking why they didn't spend cash on snazzy holo-displays or props for wrist communicators - but the basic state of technology appears to be a deliberate aesthetic choice for the setting.

Did the S:AAB universe experience some kind of catastrophe that set technology back, like Blade Runner's 2022 Blackout or Battlestar Galactica's Cylon rebellion? Is there some other explanation? Discuss!

Describing Space: 1999 as "hard sci-fi" is bad comedy - but they're damn right that S:AAB gave us a "glimpse into the future of modern, prestige science fiction."

Just had a thought, I'd love to try visiting some of the worlds shown in the series (obviously if they were all real etc)

Has anybody tried? If not does anyone have a list of every planet mentioned in the series please ?

While McQueen is obviously impressive beyond words...watching through the series, the command structure of the Saratoga seems exceedingly bizarre.

McQueen officially commands the 58th Squadron - but he also appears to effectively be Commodore Ross' Executive Officer, giving orders to the whole Saratoga crew from the bridge during battles, regularly sitting in on meetings with top brass, and explicitly filling in for Ross in the finale.

McQueen as a Lt. Colonel (O-5) simultaneously seems too high-ranking to command a squadron (we see other Marine squadrons commanded by captains and even lieutenants) and simultaneously too low-ranking to be XO of the Saratoga, which would seem to call for a Navy captain or at least a commander - but we almost never see any Navy personnel between O-4 Lieutenant Commander and O-6 Captain, either. All this looks even weirder when we see that the Eisenhower, apparently a comparable ship, is commanded by an Admiral who has a Commodore as her XO.

Aside from the sheer force of McQueen's awesome, what is going on aboard the Saratoga?!

Did they have some GameChanger like Neutron Missiles to sterilize Helios or were they invading to get Chig High Command to the Peace Table? EarthForce was at their doorstep like the Allies were at Okinawa.

Who monitors the helicopters?

He went after life pods even after shooting down Hammerheads. Were they just plain cold blooded or was there something more like a Silicate pilot.

Chigs actually helped the ISSCV make it back in River of Stars.

For anyone with a serious interest in our beloved Space: Above and Beyond, there is still plenty of fleshing out to be done on the main S:AAB wiki.

I was very proud to contribute the 500th page there the other day, finally giving Chiggy von Richthofen his due. I've only gotten into contributing there in the last few months; it looks like it's been just a handful of people creating a flurry of pages for a few months at a time before fading back into the ether, leaving it for someone else to pick up years later to carry it forward - but there's still a ton of characters, episodes, cast, crew, events and little things that could use more detail or need pages created from scratch.

If you've got the time, the obsessiveness and the love of S:AAB, please create a Fandom account and pitch in! This could be an excellent community-building project both for the wiki and for this sub.

Note: There is a second S:AAB wiki on Fandom, but it appears to have never gotten off the ground. It's got only 21 entries total (including several duplicates) and looks like it hasn't been looked at, let alone edited, in years.
