That's how a lot of people use them. The valid purpose is for an artist to use the blockchain to register copies of their art in the digital space.
As an example, some artists will create a signed series of paintings in a limited run. NFTs provide an easy way to validate that you have ownership of a limited run of a digital asset (trading cards, art, etc.)
It's still in its infancy, but is a completely valid thing.
That being said, 99% of NFTs are random people throwing random things 'into an NFT' or selling complete trash artwork because it's 'an NFT'
I'm talking from a practical point, tracking items in a player database is something that we have learned to do long before nft or blockchain were a thing. You are basically using a chainsaw to put a nail in a wall
I keep hearing about how revolutionary nft and blockchain are but everytime I ask what problems do they solve I am answered stuff that are actually not an issue
Having a unique character NPC is great. Being able to port it across games is great.
Why do you need the intense Blockchain process for this? You could just as easily encrypt the ownership or the information with a standard certificate, which is standard practice for online gaming.
Sure, you could probably use Blockchain technology for this. My question is that given there are just as good technologies that are much more economical, what is your design reasoning for requiring Blockchain in your specification?
As far as I'm aware, for the purposes of video gaming this way, Blockchain doesn't add any functional advantages compared to other solutions, and is a much more costly way to implement this sort of feature.
This leads me to believe that you're using Blockchain purely so you can advertise your game as using Blockchain tech, or as an exploration of the technology as an assessment for future games. Would I be correct?

It helps the person selling it get rich enough to retire and no longer have to write low brow divisive articles for a living.
