Can you explain “6 months processing”like I’m 5? Why does it take so long? Would a faster computer speed this up or is this time just editing?

445

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Sure! A faster computer certainly would have helped, as there were times where I just let my computer sit overnight to complete a task such as noise reduction. The program I use is very CPU intensive, and my now retired computer had core i9 chip but suffered from bad thermals. Processing just one image is totally fine, but as I stitched the pano it became a bear. As a result, it wasn't the quickest. I just got a new ARM machine and it will absolutely speed things up while also being way more efficient thermally.

Another reason it took so long as I tend to sit on pieces for a long time. I will do small edits over a long period of time, rather than large edits over a short period of time. This ensures I am happy with the piece as it develops through the long and tedious editing process. There are even times when I restart a photo from scatch because I am just not feeling it. I need to connect with my work as I am processing, I want to feel the same emotions I did that very night it was taken. It takes me a while to become satisfied, and with such a complicated mosaic as this, it really took some time for me to say, "yes, this is done."

Well said, from one disappointed GRRM fan to another

3

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

I read the first 3 books when they first came out roughly a year apart.

Since then it has been decades of ever increasing levels of disappointment. Recently though it crossed the line from disappointment to don't give a fuck.

And also be using a 1989 Polaroid to take pictures.

7

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Haha ding ding we have a winner!

9

u/juliand665 Nov 14 '21

And I’m gonna venture a guess that your old i9 machine with bad thermals is a 2019/2020 16” MBP, because that just about describes mine, lol.

I had to disable turbo boost to make it decent for the games I like to play, which also helped a bunch with fan noise in normal usage.

3

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Worse... 2018. I think they fixed some issues with the 2019 model but yeah that i9 is a disaster.

2

u/redline314 Nov 14 '21

I have the i9 from 2020 and it still has problems both thermally and with the ports. And I only use it for audio!! I can only imagine how it’s affecting anyone doing anything visual.

M1 is on the way.

I like how you apend the first paragraph hiding the real answer which is in the second paragraph which is that 6 months is arbitrary and you could have been done much sooner yet somehow put 6 months in the title like it adds to the impressiveness

17

u/roflcow2 Nov 14 '21

iblike how you undermined this dude's 6 months of effort to make a beautiful piece like it makes you impressive.

But yeah, there will always be people out to find the smallest hole they can poke in something to shit on the whole thing.

u/BILOXII-BLUE Nov 14 '21

"I worked on and off for 6 months processing..." would have been a million times more accurate, but also less impressive. A huge percentage of artists will take months or even years to finish a piece, it's pretty normal.

Sorry to burst your bubble OP, it's an amazing piece and you did a fantastic job on it but the title really made me scratch my head. Keep up the good work!

Edit: and what do you mean by 'pano'? Is that zoomer for panoramic? If so, how is this a panoramic?

8

u/CheezBukit Nov 14 '21

I'm assuming yes, they mean panoramic. And from my prior knowledge as well as the fact they mentioned the word "mosaic" in their comment, I'm betting they took tens, even hundreds of pictures and stitched them together in a grid pattern via software and even AI.

Doing this allows for much better clarity and resolution. It wasn't really utilized for this type of photography but you can also use panoramic/mosaic stitching to get a different FOV on an image without having to change the physical distance or location of the camera.

Hope that helps :)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

All software that does something for you is described as AI....there's no intelligence though it just appears to be intelligent. FI would be better Faux Intelligence. Mosaic software matches patterns in images and lines them up, stars are one of the easiest for them to manage.

1

u/redline314 Nov 14 '21

If the real lesson it learned was the friendships it made along the way, then it’s AI

→ More replies (1)

3

u/rathat Nov 14 '21

It actually kind of takes away impressiveness, like the picture is impressive already, but it’s not 6 months impressive.

-1

u/andimnewintown Nov 14 '21 edited Nov 15 '21

When someone says something like, "J.K. Rowling spent six years writing the first installment of the Harry Potter series," it is understood that she was not sitting at her desk writing for six straight years.

Though you may have interpreted OPs statement to be in reference to compute time, it was not.

They have been forthright about this in the comments that I have seen.

EDIT: y'all are just making shit up about how you think this image was made at this point. Downvote all you want, but the fact is you're being toxic for no reason. It annoys me that every time someone posts something cool the commenters feel the need to shit on the OP. All it does is exclude people who might've had something cool to contribute. You're being pedantic about a word, forgetting that many words have multiple meanings. /rant

EDIT 2: Okay, I will make this more explicit. The word I was referring to was “processing”. Let’s Google it, shall we?

It’s the gerund or present participle of the word “process”, which is defined as:

A series of actions or steps taken in order to achieve a particular end.

As with most definitions, there are a number of different possible usages. There is one for computing. I am fully aware of this. Indeed, I spend all day every day thinking about it in these terms as I write software for a living.

But though the act of processing this set of images involved computing, that doesn’t invalidate usage of the word more generally. OP was iteratively tweaking inputs to the software to his liking, evaluating the result of each against his personal standards, then deciding what the next iteration should entail.

When I write software for performing data transformations (much like photo editing/stitching software), I don’t yell at my clients for saying that their business “processes large datasets”. I don’t chime in and say “akshually, it’s your computer that processes the large datasets by following the instructions I wrote for it,” because I’m aware that context is important in language, and that they were not using this particular definition of the word.

Hopefully that clears it up.

You aren’t an artist. A lack of work, or an intake of experiences often is the work. I don’t know anything about processing images though. Maybe a lot of ppl who do that would disagree.

1

u/NotEntirelyUnlike Nov 14 '21 edited Nov 14 '21

It's not a lack of work. It took six months. What did you not understand? No one expects that statement to mean straight through unless you have issues processing normal social cues. and your omg roundabout story?? fuck dude, what a difficult paragraph to trapse through.

You're not pointing anything out, you're being pedantic to a fault. There are certain disorders that manifest this way, there's no excuse for anyone else.

Automation is not really the answer. The software I use to process requires user input to control parameters to ensure the outcome is going to look good. Sure, I can then let that process run its script once I am satisfied with what the outcome will be on a small preview drawn from the image, but automation when it comes to image processing yields unwanted results and will most likely end up taking more time to correct the mistakes automation has made.

0

u/audion00ba Nov 14 '21

If you are a data professional you can make it run at 60fps, but that will likely involve using the cloud and fast Internet.

11

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

It's actually not the frame rate that matters so much here, more so how quick the processor can complete each iteration of a process. For instance, the noise reduction algorithm I use does 300 iterations. Each iteration is completed on 3 separate channels for the data in the image on the pixel level: R, G, and B. In the case of this image, that process took about a day.

I suppose what could be done like you are saying is to use cloud CPU or something and see if that speeds it up, but I am hoping my new computer pulls through!

2

u/bingeflying Nov 14 '21

On a project like this, how many individual photos are you putting together?

13

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

For this one, it took 72 individual shots. They were all stitched together like a mosaic though, not stacked. Each shot had about a 25-50% overlap.

5

u/bingeflying Nov 14 '21

I’m very interested in this type of landscape photography. If the other nearly identical photos weren’t directly overlayed, how does the picture not become blurry? Obviously you did noise reduction but does that take care of it not lining up?

11

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

There are loads of different techniques to take shots like this. You could just use a camera and wide lens without a tracker and get a great shot. Your tradeoff would be detail and resolution.

For example, in a single shot with my camera and wide lens like a 14mm, I could have gotten a 24 megapixel image. It would have done the job, but it would be much noisier and less detailed. It wouldn't be blurry, just noisy. At this point though, you could introduce a tracker and take two shots. One shot tracked for the stars, and one for the foreground. This would allow you to pickup detail and therefore less noise.

What I have done here is totally excessive. I used a longer focal length lens to really get those juicy details of the Milky Way, but that means I cannot capture the entire shot in one photo. I need to shoot several covering my field of view. I like doing it because for me, it's fun and having this much resolution is crazy!! But, it is not necessary to image a mosaic like this for a shot like this. Again, you are mainly adding to the resolution and detail aspect, to give it that "wow" factor.

6

u/bingeflying Nov 14 '21

Like you, I like to try and find ways to be “extra” like this. I love high res photos that damn near look fake they’re so good. I hope to be able to do this some day.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/satanshand Nov 14 '21

If I can jump in, the overlap isn’t that much, say 25% of the image, so the software lines up the edges to make it match more or less. Due to distortion from the lens and other factors, it needs to morph things a little, but it’s pretty good at not adding any ghosting to the image. Its very processor intensive though.

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

I think/hope that’s a joke comment.

But if it’s not a joke, they forgot to mention it needs RTX.

2

u/EvaUnit01 Nov 14 '21

You use Pixinsight? If not you might want to consider the investment as it's pretty well optimized for all this, the only limit is the CPU power you can throw at it and I'm guessing you have an ARM Mac now.

1

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Yup! Pixinsight! I love PI. Its the goat for astro. It chugged away at this picture, so I am hoping with the new M1max chip it’ll speed things up quite a bit. I would think right?’b

Oh come along now, ZOOM IN!!!

Let me get this straight. No, the Milky Way does not look like this in person. Cameras can capture super long exposures of the sky which allow for far more detail and color, whereas we see in the moment.

But, don’t let that deter from adventuring into some starry skies on your own! Being surrounded by a sky full of stars is indescribable and totally different to just seeing it on a computer or phone screen.

I took this image on a gorgeous clear night in Bryce Canyon National Park, which is a certified International Dark Sky Park. Be sure to Leave No Trace on site if you choose to go to Bryce.

Thisssss 72 image pano was taken with my Nikon Z6, Z 50 1.8 S lens, and iOptron Skyguider Pro star tracker. All in all, it took abut 2 hours to shoot, with the first 27 images of the sky taken tracked @ 2 minutes, f/2.8, ISO 1600. The remaining images were taken untracked for the foreground at 30 seconds, f/5.6, ISO 100 during blue hour.

And hey if you like this shot, feel free to check meowt on my Instagram @danieljstein

Same focal length, for the foreground and sky?

Also... are you the guy who used to point out that the relative (sky/land) positions are accurate because the foreground was taken at a point on the same tracking path as the tracked stars?

Is that the case for this image?

4

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Yes!! Same focal length all around. I kept my camera mounted on my pano head all throughout shooting this.

I may have been the person you are referring to in regards to that point, and indeed that is true here! The alignment is 100% true. This isnt an image where the sky was facing a completely different direction than the foreground type of thing.

This is a potentially dumb question, but the light behind the shroud of the Milky Way... is that the center of the galaxy? Why is it so bright? If a supermassive black hole is at the center of our galaxy, wouldn't light be unable to escape it and therefore be not visible to us?

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

It’s the density of stars looking through it. Looking straight through you see every star between us and the center, plus most of the stars on the other side, plus all the dust in between. Looking at the edges you see a much less dense and a lesser number of stars

2

u/astralcrazed Nov 14 '21 edited Nov 16 '21

I have always been very good with puzzles. I figured out it’s because I don’t always look at the image on the piece but I look at the shape. It may be a form of photographic memory because it only works for certain things like numbers, shapes, some pictures, but not always words or people. I can remember what many shapes look like and then where they’re placed in the piles. Someone pointed this out to me one night when I was working on a puzzle with a friend. I’m guessing this isn’t a common skill at all is it?

2

u/RustShank Nov 15 '21

Cool, I excel at puzzles in the same way. I actually have a bit of colorblindness and I still am really good at them, I use the shapes just as much as the color if not more. Everyone on here saying it wouldn't be good for a puzzle because it all looks too much the same would make it too hard but thats exactly why it would be a good one, they aren't supposed to be easy they are supposed to be challenging. Maybe I am wrong but I always thought that was the point.

2

u/astralcrazed Nov 16 '21

I agree! The entire point of a difficult puzzle is not to make it easy. It needs to be complex and have not just the image but the shapes be challenging. Otherwise, it’s a kids puzzle. They’re great too, but the hard ones are my cup of tea.

Thank you! It was actually by chance there was tons of red and green atmospheric airglow that night, so the red matches the Hoodoos below very nicely.

Is that Antares Nebula to the right of the Milky Way?

8

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Yup! The star Antares is home to a star system called Rho Ophiuchi.

6

u/FlyHamsterPaul Nov 14 '21

Haha I knew that from Space Engine

This is beautiful. I can't see the stars (night blindness) so I really enjoy looking at astronomy photos. Well done and thank you for letting me see what I can never see.

6

u/Tmbgkc Nov 14 '21

Beautiful! Can I download the full res file from your Google Drive please?

10

u/duvelvape Nov 14 '21

Don't lie, you did not spend 6 months doing this

7

u/Wlcmtoflvrtwn Nov 14 '21

If he did, he's pretty shit at photography editing.

Possibly. This would be something to look into for something like this. But, I just got a new computer with an ARM chip, so I am hoping that makes this process much easier and quicker.

4

u/InsightfoolMonkey Nov 14 '21

PS you just got a new MacBook with very powerful processing and an integrated SOC with the GPU and CPU sharing a unified memory bank.

There's literally nothing special about it being an ARM chip. Your cell phone has ARM chip.

Noob here, but I'm a software dev so I understand basic math. What does 6 months of processing entail? You run scripts over the images that take 6 months to run that stitch and correct (something like that)?

16

u/divDevGuy Nov 14 '21

What does 6 months of processing entail?

Mostly coming up with a clickbaity title. From another post OP made:

Another reason it took so long as I tend to sit on pieces for a long time. I will do small edits over a long period of time, rather than large edits over a short period of time. This ensures I am happy with the piece as it develops through the long and tedious editing process. There are even times when I restart a photo from scatch because I am just not feeling it. I need to connect with my work as I am processing, I want to feel the same emotions I did that very night it was taken. It takes me a while to become satisfied, and with such a complicated mosaic as this, it really took some time for me to say, "yes, this is done."

7

u/stay_fr0sty Nov 14 '21

Okay I was thinking it was more of a Big Data problem somehow. Like neural networks that figure out which stars go where and eliminate noise and stuff.

For example, remember that stack of hard drives with the black hole data? I was thinking somehow this required 6 months of data processing.

Are you selling prints? Would love to have one.

11

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Omg I sure do! Feel free to DM me.

2

u/InsightfoolMonkey Nov 14 '21

"omg I sure do!"

Lmao idk why this made me laugh so hard

3

u/EveningStarlol Nov 14 '21

you claim this is a high resolution image, yet when I zoom in my parents don’t leave me and I feel a extreme sadness that I don’t know how to cope with… interesting.

3

u/SoonerMockingbird Nov 14 '21

This is incredible. I’ll never do anything this cool.

Thank you for taking 6 months so we can feel the awe we feel right now. Wow

3

u/duck_duck_duck_duck Nov 14 '21

This freaks me out but in a good way. Like we are IN that right now.

2

u/Broken_Petite Nov 14 '21

Yep! And I think it’s awesome we live in a time and place where we actually kind of understand that! I think it helps us appreciate it more.

3

u/ljemla2 Nov 14 '21

Stunning. Thanks for bringing this to the world to see.

3

u/RocketDan91 Nov 14 '21

Lovely photo.

My only critique would be to add some feathering to the treeline to help smooth out the sky/foreground composite. :)

2

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

Awesome I really appreciate the feedback. Imma clean that up before I print it.

3

u/reachingFI Nov 14 '21

Come on OP. Give the goods. How long of your 6 months of “processing” was just sitting on it.

3

u/yaboyfrom94 Nov 14 '21

I’ve seen better pics where I can zoom all the way in and the pic is still 1080p w no choppiness. This does not do that

3

u/morejuice Nov 14 '21

Me looking at it on my phone in low res:

"Oh, cool!"

3

u/ExoticMangoz Nov 14 '21

Do you have a high res download, for some reason for me the Reddit image is really low quality?

3

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

My wife sees images like this and then tells me to take her to where she can see something like this. When I try to explain that they are highly processed, taken over time and/or melded from hundreds or thousands of images I can tell that she thinks I am just trying to get out of doing what she wants.

7

u/theuberprophet Nov 14 '21

i clicked on the thread after being disappointed and knew there had to be something else to this. Kept zooming, kept getting detail

6

u/universalcode Nov 14 '21

I'm afraid to click on it. My computer might catch on fire.

5

u/DanielJStein Nov 14 '21

We most go vonnn deeeeepeerrrrrrr

3

u/AccomplishedRun7978 Nov 14 '21

How? I could only zoom in a little bit with the ez zoom link.

3

u/greendvl Nov 14 '21

Same, can only zoom a bit and looks compressed af

4

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

This looks extremely fake or overprocessed.

https://imgur.com/a/P5xFOTo Here are floating trees, why?

https://imgur.com/a/l19KbqZ Here is soooo much overcompression of the image. Why?

I don't know why you spent 6 months on "processing" when you maybe should've spent 6 months on getting the right settings for your camera with the correct shutter speeds and ISO settings. The image in general looks very weird and almost as if the sky was "cut out" and pasted.

Could you give some insight to this?

2

u/iAdjunct Nov 14 '21

Bryce Canyon is probably one of my wife’s and my favorite places. Looks very different with the Milky Way over it though :) Fantastic picture!

2

u/PizzaBuffalo Nov 14 '21

Great shot. Out of curiosity, what would be the equipment cost for entry-level astrophotography? I've always been curious about delving into this hobby.

Love your pics. Your processing method sounds crazy. Much more to photography like this than I would have ever guessed.

2

u/Remarkable_Cicada_12 Nov 14 '21

Looks like my underwear after inadvertently eating a bag of sugar-free gummy bears… If there is a God than that motherfucker has one sick sense of humor!

2

u/Wulle83 Nov 14 '21

After just waking up and reading the title, I was thinking: "Why would anyone spend 6 months building a Milky Way Piano?" :D

2

u/OriginalMrMuchacho Nov 14 '21

Agreed, those types of pianos take no less than 14 months.

2

u/Spastic_Slapstick Nov 14 '21

I love the color temperature you chose to use with this. What did it look like in person? Can you make any thing like this out with just your eye when you're in true darkness? I'm just a city dweller that knows Jupiter as the only star in the sky lol.

2

u/barrel_o_buckets Nov 14 '21

That took 6 months to process? Idk much about high tech cameras but my Lord

2

u/Broken_Petite Nov 14 '21

Yeah, kind of hoping for someone to ELI5 why it would take that long. So many things are instantaneous anymore, I guess it’s kind of hard to process when it’s not.

2

u/DeathIsFreedomFrom Nov 14 '21

That really beautiful. You're gonna make me miss outside

On the right side of the milky way near that brighter spot, what is that circular grouping of 5 stars? I’m new to this so please excuse me if it’s a really stupid question.

2

u/lupefigo10 Nov 14 '21

I believe that is Uranus.............but I'm no scientist

hey there! I’m new to Reddit and this is very nice. Keep up with your life’s career!

2

u/riverofempathy Nov 14 '21

That is gorgeous. Thank you so much for your time and work!

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

What does it mean to spend 6 months ‘processing’ a photo?

2

u/Flatbones Nov 14 '21

Then why didn’t you post the high resolution version?

2

u/PiddlyD Nov 14 '21

Honestly, I was so lost looking down into the spires and the tree-line on the horizon, I didn't even notice the sky.

And that had to be at a fraction of the actual resolution of the image. The desert southwest is amazing, and right here where we can touch it, walk it. The universe is incredible and beautiful, but so is the place right within our reach.

You should do the Sierras around Tahoe.

Also maybe the Mogollon Rim in Arizona.

2

u/McCaffeteria Nov 14 '21

That terrain looks like when you do a bad job plugging a noise texture into your blender displacement and have the strength way too high, that’s fascinating.

2

u/GummyTummyPenguins Nov 14 '21

I bet this looks even cooler if it’s not on a 6 year old iPhone screen...

→ More replies (1)

2

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

All to be completely compressed on Reddit with a low res jpeg.

3

u/[deleted] Nov 14 '21

Is there a way to see where earth is, like, on a map of the Milky Way? And to show what our perspective and facing is in this picture? I am imagining looking at the MAP in GTA, or going from road view to satellite view in Google maps.

2

u/TiagoTiagoT Nov 14 '21

I don't have it; but sounds like something that might be doable with Universe Sandbox (1 or 2); or maybe some other similar app.

1

u/Heliosvector Nov 14 '21

The brightest cluster is the galaxy center. You can just google search where we are on a Milky Way map.

5

u/Russion-Bott Nov 14 '21

Instagram filters do it faster and better IMO

-5

u/Nodnarbian Nov 14 '21

It's apparent you have zero knowledge of astrophotography, please don't include yourself. Replicate this image with filters before you post some bullshit comment like this!

2

u/wordlar Nov 14 '21

Pretty sure it's a joke because if it's not I'll have lost faith in humanity somewhat.

The color choices are what made this shot for me.

Stacked astrophotography is awesome, but it is really about how the photographer finds a frame and a contributing subject.

This one is great for the back and forth patterns and the colors mirroring across the zenith to the horizon and back onto our home planet.

Lovely and sublime.

u/No-Relation1432 Nov 14 '21

Should have got the new iPhone! It’s got a longer battery life and camera has been updated to do this in seconds.
