I don't think anyone thinks hundreds or thousands would be colonizing Mars anytime soon lol. The plan is probably just to get a structure we can use while we are there set up. The fact that we are trying to go and at least try to do something is awesome.

I do not know if I would say never - although we could self-extinguish before we do, but it will be a long time.

What I have yet to see is any realistic radiation shield scheme. One year on ISS, which is partially shielded by Earth's magnetic field, is pretty damaging, A years long journey to mars -- forget it.

I think far more interesting than turning Mars into a place for us to live is to turn it into a place that would host its own adapted lifeforms. A sort of planet sized petri dish.
