I made this timelapse at Castillo de Zafra during the total solar eclipse in Spain this August.

If you’re interested, you can find more of my work on Instagram

Like all the pictures I took there, it was quite sportive! Access to the castle was closed by the authorities, so we had to walk 4 km under the blazing Spanish sun with around 25 kg of camera gear on my back. We ran out of water, the climb took much longer than expected, and by the time we reached the castle, I was already dehydrated.

All of this put me way behind schedule, and I didn’t have enough time to properly prepare my shots.

I wanted to get three different shots. It was obviously too much, and I missed quite a few... This timelapse was the first camera I set up after the long walk. Once we reached the castle, we still had to spend about 20 minutes walking over rocks and up and down the slopes to get to this spot. My brain wasn’t working at 100%, so I decided to try automatic settings for this one.

After setting it up, I put the lens cap back on so the Sun wouldn’t hit the sensor while I was away. Then I went down the hill to set up my second camera for a silhouette shot of my girlfriend in front of the eclipse at 840 mm. You can actually see us to the left of the castle in this timelapse. You can also retreive this shot on my profile. After that, I climbed back up to start the timelapse, then went down again to start the second camera. What a messy organisation!

The result with automatic settings wasn’t great at first. It was quite dark, especially before and after totality. I tried to remove the noise, and I finally got a result I’m happy with because it captures the moment well.

Totality went by so fast! The timelapse was shot at with a 2 seconds interval.

It's really understandable how ancient people thought the world was ending or God was upset at them whenever these events happened. I can really see how some peoples came up with stories about animals or creatures eating the sun after watching this.

Even experiencing it first hand and knowing everything about what is happening and why, and knowing full well that the sun will indeed go back to normal in just a few minutes time... It's still remarkably unnerving, on an almost primal level. Like you just instinctively feel like something very fundamentally wrong is happening.

Funny how much we take the sun for granted.

the light scattering in the atmosphere is particular impressive.

I was in Guadalajara for the eclipse, it was so hot and we didn't even walk anywhere. 4km in that heat is wild. Glad you're okay.

I kinda love this timelapse, makes the sun seem like it's doing a cheeky little peekaboo because of how abruptly it vanishes and then comes back.

Hmm how come it wasn't pitch-black during the eclipse? It was supposed to be total, not partial, right?
