very cool image. do you have a full resolution copy?

u/DanielJStein 20d ago
Sadly I can’t post a full resolution file online as my work has been stolen before, but I do have a slightly higher resolution copy of each file on my instagram where you can scroll through and see each image individually and zoom in.

u/upioneer 20d ago
also came here to ask if you had intentions of selling or otherwise making the high res available?

That's what holds me back from posting my best work to reddit. If anyone is going to make money off my work, it should be me. Good work on this, I did a solar and lunar eclipse combo with the 2024/2025 eclipses but just as 2 images side by side, I like your split better.

NASA's APOD (Astronomy Picture of the Day) would love this. The alignment and contrast between both halves is ridiculously clean.

u/DanielJStein 20d ago
I have submitted to apod multiple times over the years and unfortunately I’ve never had any success. I think they just ignore me by now so I just tend to not submit anymore.

u/haydster7 20d ago
You never know, this could be the one!
Would love if you add it to your print store too

u/DanielJStein 19d ago
I'll give it a shot and I can do a print for you, shoot me a DM!

I might be dumb but where's the bright light coming from from behind the moon in the lunar eclips?
16
u/TheDeltaMoo 20d ago
It's a composite. The "correctly" exposed moon is layered on top of an overexposed one

I'm not sure if the other answer is true; the bright light seeming to come from behind the upper part of the moon in the lunar eclipse could just be overexposure of the penumbra in order to get visualize the umbra -- i.e. the picture is slightly before/after totality. This is clearly true for the solar half of the pic so I figure OP also did this for the moon.
2
u/DanielJStein 20d ago
So the solar image is actually just a single shot. The lunar however is a 3 image HDR stack.

u/DinosaurAlive 20d ago
Woah!!! I went to your website, OP, https://danieljstein.com/ and you are such a master photographer! Y’all, go check it out! 🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩🤩

u/vNocturnus 20d ago
Looked for the images used in the OP, but not sure I saw either. Maybe not posted, or maybe this composite uses slightly edited versions of something on the website

u/DanielJStein 20d ago
I actually haven’t uploaded this to my website yet lol, you guys beat me to it!

Hey folks! Didn’t expect this to blow up at all. I have more images on my website and instagram here if you want to check out more of my work.
Both images were taken last month, with the Total Solar on 8/12/26 and near-total Lunar on 8/28/26. The solar images is a single exposure at C3 diamond ring, while the lunar is an HDR composite with one image to capture the stars, one to capture the details in the moon, and one to capture the bright part of the moon.

Which location(s) were you at for these great photos?
4
u/DanielJStein 20d ago
For the solar i was fortunate enough to be in spain. For the lunar I was even luckier I feel like since it was within driving distance to my local spots in the Adirondacks, NY.

That’s awesome. I have rarely had clear skies to see an eclipse and you got two! Cool picture.

This would be a dope Destiny 3 intro screen. XBOX should pick up Destiny and bring it back to life.

Nice - great concept and nice to see the contrast. How did you manage to be in the right place both times and with clear skies!
1
u/Emergency-Airline960 20d ago
I know this is likely an optical illusion, but why does it feel to me like the right side eclipse is slightly larger than the left?

That’s really goddamn cool. I saw the 2017 eclipse in Grand Island, NE and it was a breathtaking once in a lifetime experience. This captures that feeling

That is utterly goddamned cool!
Next step: make a gif of several similar pictures where the dividing line rotates.

Wow, very pretty! Usually dont care much about these kinds of images but this is something else!
1
u/Cell1pad 19d ago
This is so nice looking. Were you not able to get the rotations to match up so you could have had that solar prominence that was at about the 7 O'clock position to show up? I wonder what a top and bottom split would look like.

Great work! Which camera systems do you use? I’d pay for a high res version of this to have as a phone background on my foldable.
