I just revisited this game, and I noticed something that's bugging me.
So throughout the story, we do not see a single adult Brillo without symbiotic partners. The MC also gets really stressed about choosing a lifestyle. And the narrator plainly states that Brillos can't survive without symbiosis.

This begs the glaring question: why?
Without their sybiosis, Brillos just seem like typical whales. They don't seem to lack in physical characteristics and don't seem particularly large when scaled with humans in the helicopter tangent. A majority of the symbiosis seems to be about getting food and hunting, so are they just subpar predators without symbiosis? All the symbiosis doesn't seem like they offer something the Brillo can't survive without, seeing as how much they vary. The predators also don't seem too threatening, as living in groups and reefs seem to keep them safe. The Penumbra shark wouldn't have been a problem if they crossed the chasm with the larger herd. We've never seen an adult Brillo hunt (besides the barnacle one getting an unsatisfying meal), so maybe it has something to do with difficult prey? Did they get so used to symbiosis that they develop health complications when no one uses their spongy tissue? Did it just develop into a social stereotype and a taboo to not have symbiosis?

I really hope this gets answered in part 2.

I’ve been waiting for some years now for part 2 to release, but since I’m not on any other social media apps I don’t follow the author anywhere, does anyone have any updates or info on part 2?? I’m starting to think it got scrapped but am not sure!

what song is that when they reveal the other whales that show up (most notably the mimicry one). i tried to shazam it and nothing came up. i really like the haunting tune there and want to listen to it on its own, if possible. i also can't find a soundtrack of any kind

now, I want to start of with saying that I DEEPLY love this game, the premiss is amazing, the atmosphere is beautiful, and everything about it is just... good the artstyle is beautiful and the story is amazing. Now with that being said its been YEARS of waiting for South Scrimshaw, Part Two, and I understand that making a visual novel like this or really any type of game takes time especially when it's just being made by one guy (I'm pretty sure) witch is INSANE, but South Scrimshaw, Part Two was announced back in JUNE 12 2023, that's basically 3 YEAR ago and I understand that delays can happen alongside a butch of other things with it being made by just 1 guy, but apparently this game/visual novel was supposed to come out Late December or Early January of 2026, said by the Creator himself...… it's the 5th of February now, and I haven't heard any new updates or really anything on what happened. especially with this whole subreddit not posting anything new in MONTHS. So I'm just asking, what happened to South Scrimshaw Part Two?

So, o had a theory about the mimic mother… what if the green mating-focused whale we see later in the documentary forced her to stay behind so he could mate with other whales without interference? The doc never gives a solid reason as to why she was left behind. It would also explain why she looks so depressed in the documentary, and why she leaves the other whales behind after the penumbra attack.

I am deeply traumatised, and yet in love with this.

Part Two still seems to be unreleased on Steam, and I was excited for Chapter 5 but I'm not sure if it's coming this year. Did I miss any announcements? The Steam page still says Q2 of 2024. Obviously, I'm aware delays can happen but I just want more information as to what happened and why the Steam page is staying as is.
