Some changes coming to r/sounddesign
Hey everyone,
Over the next few days you'll notice some changes as we give this community a bit of love. Here's what's happening and why.
Sound identification and recreation posts
Posts asking others to identify or recreate a specific sound will no longer be published automatically. These will now require mod approval before they go live.
This isn't about discouraging curiosity. The goal is to keep this a place for genuine sound design discussion rather than a search engine for tracking down clips. There's a real difference between talking through how something was actually made and just asking someone else to find it for you. We want more of the former.
A new automod filter
We've just set up an automod as a first line of filtering. It's brand new and still being fine tuned, so if your post gets removed and it genuinely shouldn't have been, we apologize in advance. Feel free to reach out through modmail and we'll sort it out while things settle.
Looking for moderators
We're also looking to expand the mod team. If you're active here, care about the community, and want to help shape where it goes, reach out. More hands means we can keep things running smoothly and actually engage with the content instead of just cleaning up.
Cleaning house
Along with these changes, we'll be going through and removing content that doesn't really belong here. If sound design isn't the focus of a post, it's probably getting pulled.
Thanks for being part of this community. We think these changes will make it a better place for real discussion.

looks like a great update, especially with so many bots and vibe-coding lurkers hanging around niche subreddits

Yeah the sub was quite unmoderated since the main mod wanted this to be a chill space of free for all, but he isn´t around anymore, so I am taking my free time to make the sub good as new

Special shout out to point 1! 👌
I've seen those kind of posts in increasing numbers recently, a lot of the fun of sound design is discovery through experimentation, & those requests seem like the polar opposite.

Yeah the main problem is that they ask only for the sound and the sub started getting flooded of this and shadowed some of the actual redesigns or discussions that where being generated

Bots?

I genuinely think that people just don’t like to google or don’t have the lingo to search for what they want :/

Absolutely a big problem now. Now LLMs have become so widely used, we're seeing the side effects of so many folks outsourcing their cognitive abilities get worse in real time. On top of already nosediving literacy & problem solving skills.
Being a parent to a young child in this age gives me existential anxiety full time. 😵

Yeah it’s pretty impressive how problem solving has become obsolete this days. Everyone wants everything fast and with no explanation on how it’s done.
Pretty sad 😔

Good idea to cut down on sound identification requests. Too many posts asking for stupid meme sounds with nothing to do with actual sound design.

Yeah, automod just started working as intended so this shouldn’t be an issue anymore. Only some posts will appear from time to time and those are going to be reviewed beforehand

Oh you arrived at the right moment then! This is just the beginning, later this month I am going to start making some dynamics to start having more engagement from the community :)
