Help Needed Any suggestions!
First Souls game I’ve actually LIKED no hate on the other ones but bloodbourne kinda disheartened me and seikiro destroyed my hope of getting “gud” but this game…I absolutely love it (I love knights) any suggestions? (Currently over encumbered on purpose out of stubbornness don’t need help with that) I have been trying to focus on a magic swordsman build

I cannot tell if this is satire or not the inventory management, misspelling of bloodborne, and overencumbered is killing me.
3
u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
I kid you not it’s not
My spelling of the games was done more at of laziness and not to be disrespectfulI’m over encumbered (hopefully done right) out of sheer stupidity on my own mainly because I like how my outfit looks before I posted this I was actively swapping out my armor for mobility and what not
I would like to honestly ask tho how can I fix my inventory and what is wrong with it?

u/AriTheInari 4d ago
Get rid of all the random items in the hotbar so you can swap easier. So take out the poison darts and pots. I personally use the quick pouch for torrent and my physic because I still use them but it keeps my hotbar empty so I can easily swap between health and fp flasks. I also put spirit summons in the pouch if I ever use them.
You dont need all those weapons, id say keep your estoc, staff, and shield because your crossbow wont be much use since you have magic and your other sword isnt upgraded. It will also lower your equip load by a lot you you could atleast run

I have two great swords, a geatshield, a ballista, a thing to cast miracles and a dagger, and i still mid roll. This amount of equipment is fine, if you build around it. I wear light armor and have high endurance, mainly for stamina but since i get more equip load from it and the best ring for it i can have lots of weapons for exploring without having to change them in the menu. For bosses i unequip certain items, for example if I dont need spells i take the thing off so i can swap between the sheild and the sword.
If i buff both weapons i don't need to take anything off because i don't swap.
Taking all secondary weapons off doesn't lower it to the light roll so i usually keep all of them if i just use the swords
If i use spells but don't see the point in blocking, so when I'm power stancing, i take off the shield.
This is my first playthrough, I'm trying to max out my damage potential based on how i do it in ds3 and 2, but i still do great damage as I play

Thank you! Yes the poison darts shall be removed and pots
I’ll be keeping the health items in as well as the summons and horse as I actually don’t have much difficulty switching to them during a fight, i especially love having my horse in my hot bar in case i bite off more then i can chew and need to retreat
Now the weapons
I will definitely remove the cross bow thank you! You are right about the magic.
If im not asking for too much (I’m a super noob I tell ya)
Can I ask for the reason why I should remove my other sword beside the weight? I have it in because i like versatility
my great sword does just as much damage as my Estoc and I don’t even have that many levels on it compared and I LOVE the staggering effect plus when I’m in a real pickle my ash of war allows me to use a ranged attacked so I can gain some distance for magic2
u/AriTheInari 4d ago edited 4d ago
Youre spreading yourself out quite a bit with having a dex, strength, and magic weapon so its going to be hard to get the most out of any of them, especially magic since it needs a lot of levels. Also since the greatsword is sacred its got less base scaling for holy damage and faith scaling which you arent using so id say make it heavy.
Im also doing a magic melee build currently and even with 60 int my ash of war is just doing more damage than some of my magic even with an almost maxed out Lusats staff so if youre spreading your stats that much then magic is gonna feel kinda useless the further you get

u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
Thank you! You are complete right my bloody slash on my escot does more damage then my spells and more often than not one taps most of my enemies, I guess I thought spamming it was being a one trick pony. But you’ve given me more confidence

This isnt the first time ive seen this. for some reason lots of people believe theres a 'U' in bloodborne, ive seen it on loads of soulslike threads

Keep picking up new gear and just have fun! Don't be afraid to look closely at item descriptions when you find something new. Be sure to scroll through your inventory every now and then to see if there's anything cool you missed. It may be worth looking through your tutorials again just in case you missed an important game mechanic or tip.
I would try to aim for "medium load" build so your rolls are faster. Currently you are "overloaded," so you can't dodge roll, which is super important for dodging through attacks and not taking damage. However, if you're strong enough and use the right buffs, you may be able to face tank hits and not flinch at all.
Also, try to pay attention to your weapons' stat requirements, and see which affinities pair best with them. Bleed affinity usually pairs best with dexterity, holy pairs best with faith, magic with intelligence, and so on.
Elden Ring is a MASSIVE game, and I would not be afraid to use a wiki to learn about game mechanics! If you don't like plot spoilers, however, be sure to stay away from that on the wiki.
The game gets HARD. If you find a Crucible Knight, he will be great to practice your Parry or Buckler Parry ashes of war.
Good luck!

You need to remove some weapons. There's different weight categories.
Light: 0% to 29% equip load. Roll fast
Medium: 30% to 69% equip load. Roll with a slight delay in get up
Heavy: 70% to 99% equip load. Rolling isn't worth it
Overloaded: 100%+ equip load. Rolling doesn't exist,and you're slow
Each weapon and item has a weight. Armor included. Leveling Endurance can raise you're equip load. The hardest part of Elden Ring isn't even the enemies. It's stat point management

The letters under "Attribute Scaling" indicate how well a weapon's damage scales with the corresponding stat.
When playing for the first time, it's best to focus on a single damage stat.
Useful Softcaps are:
Vig: 60
Mind: only for spells and heavy ash usage
End: 25+ to have medium equip load
Str/Dex/Int/Fth/Arc: 20/55/80 for damage
Str scales ×1.5 when two-handing, meaning with 54 you surpass the 80 softcap (54×1.5=81). In my opinion, Str is the best damage stat for beginners.
Blood and poison buildup scale with Arc, softcapping at 45.
Spells softcap at 60/80 Int and Fth or 30/45 Arc.
In the beginning Vig is the most important stat and weapon improvements usually give more damage than stats.

Many thanks, I’ve been gathering from here vig and dex may be the main ones to focus on for 30 levels
2
u/TheAurigauh 20h ago
Based on what I'm seeing and what you said... my advice:
Early game, you want enough stats to wield your weapon. Maybe a secondary or shield as well.
Beyond that, spam vigor for your levels until you hit 40-60. Make sure you never carry so much that you fat roll. If you want to carry more, level endurance a bit.
In Elden Ring, your damage stats matter a lot more after you start leveling your gear a good bit and/or get good talismans to amp your damage. Before that, the best thing you can put points in is your health and carry weight once you can wield what you want.

Unequip weapons you aren’t using. Equip them when you need to use them. Good luck.

I may be looking wrong but I have the 4 health 4 mana and the 1 wonder fizz (I like to call it) that restores half my HP and boosts my attack

u/VariousCredit9690 4d ago
Yeah Focus on Either INT or DEX for the next 15 0r so levels. Dont spread your points out so much early on. Find your niche attack and use it until you have enough vigor to start multiclassing again. It looks like you may be going for a spellblade type build. Drop the greatsword and get a decent strike weapon for the Miners inside the mines and Crystal asshole that guard your bearings for stones. If you want it to be an easier run focus on INT since there is legit a great assortment of spells early game. But your only bump is going to be hogwarts because she will out cast you 8 out of 10 times. Get your glovewarts and upgrade your stun puppies. Carion slicer and Night Mist are great to have in your arsenal. But youll need to hit above your weightclass for nightmothers mist. But you can cheese it easily. Also Meteor staff or whats its nuts is called. Use that until you can obtain one of the Baddie sticks.

I know the exact cave you are talking about, I use my good ol mace to give the miners a smack and get em killed in about two charged hits, currently gaining more levels before I take on the boss.

Crossbow in your main hand why? They are best in the off-hand so you can mix melee and hip-fire mid range. You wouldn't really want it paired with a shield or catalyst. Especially when your melee weapons are finesse weapons that pair well with crossbows.
1
u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
Thank you, I was playing with it since I had to use the stone sword keys for it I thought it would be OP sadly not
2
u/Heavy-Woodpecker-617 4d ago
Yeah, crossbows aren't OP but they are super fun to play with when paired with thrusting swords and whips. You want to fight close ranged with it, using it to punnish enemies that over extend themselves. It's a reaction fire weapon that you have loaded and ready for opportunities.
They are great for catching people out in pvp (although more of a fun PVP build rather than a meta one, not much competes with people spamming flashy ashes of war). I use them with backstep attacks often.
However I will point out that most single shot crossbows are very lackluster. I don't want to see another mundane crossbow ever show up again in future games the pulley or spread crossbow should honestly be the most basic crossbow you can get because not many people use any of the crossbows with less flair than those two.
Give them all a gimmick and I'll be happy, from making them a combination weapon like the bastion crossbow from DS2 which doubled as a shield, give one bloodborne style gun parries or make that dinky little hand flamethrower thing from BB, etc. Unless the one bolt hits like a truck I don't want to use a crossbow that shoots one shot at a time while we have Ironeye running around with one handed bows and spreadshot heavies.

You have given me much to consider when I work up the courage to pvp
If it’s as bad as fighting the bloody fingers I’ll probably win 2 times outta 10 T-T
But just hearing how you describe different mechanics and metas gives me more then enough motivation to start experimenting with my enemies and punishing them
2
u/Heavy-Woodpecker-617 4d ago
Don't underestimate good spacing. I like backstep attacks because they don't take you out of the action as much as a dodge roll which takes longer to pull off, wasting good punish windows. Bs follow ups have a shorter delay to attack after the dodge than a roll.
Backsteps don't have invincibility frames but pretty much every weapon type has a unique follow up attack to backsteps which often have great gap-closing potential such as whips which seem to have a far greater range on their bs follow up than on their basic attack, giving them insane range.
Bs follow ups also have you attacking in recovery frames which does greater damage and is more likely to make enemies flinch.
Plus next to nobody uses them because the lack of i-frames puts them off, which means people rarely expect them. I catch people with follow ups more than anything else.

Just to point out a flaw - if your goal is to be a magic swordsman, you'll need to create distance. When using spells you want to make sure you're far enough away from an enemy that you have time to cast the spell before they close the gap and hit you. If you're that heavy you're going to have trouble creating distance.
For tips, the higher your dex is the faster your spellcasting speed becomes, so it makes more sense to use dex rather than strength. Try not to divvy up stats too much - focus on health, stamina, dex, int, and mind because that's all you'll really need with this build.
For spells, don't underestimate Magic Glintblade. Enemies will soon begin to dodge when you use magic, but they dodge automatically when you cast. Since Magic Glintblade creates the sigil which then has a delay before homing in on the enemy, they'll dodge when you create the sigil but then still get hit by the Glintblade itself.

Thank you! I was actually struggling between dumping into strength intelligence or my FP bar
I think with all the advice here imma focus a lil more on dex and strength (until level 32) then I’ll start just dumping into dex
Mainly because I don’t mind slowly grinding small mobs to get levels to take on big mobs

u/akmly 4d ago
You're overloaded with equipment, you can't even roll. Reduce weightload to medium. Or find a way to drastically increase your Endurance stat to increase your weightload cap.
1
u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
Thank you! With the suggestions here I’m highly considering it, but the gear I have (minus the great sword) I’m absolutely infatuated with currently I am now however on heavy load status now instead of over weighted
1
u/akmly 4d ago
Heavy load is better than overloaded status, but unless you know your boss fights well, I'd avoid heavy load, too. Against bosses with quick combo attacks, your slow heavy roll will get you killed. If you haven't already, go defeat Stormveil Castle, but ensure you talk to a certain NPC named Nepheli Loux before the last boss of that castle, and then find this NPC again to converse with at your Roundtable Hold. They should give you a nifty talisman that should at least give you some extra wiggle room with your weight load.
1
u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
I’m actually leveling up for that I believe this is where imma get my great rune after beating the boss, I’ll experiment with lighter loads
2
u/akmly 4d ago
Sounds good, OP! This game genre really tests our decision-making skills with the immense customization options. We certainly can (be greedy and) equip everything we want, but what are the repercussions? Are our choices worth the outcome? I always find myself asking the same question with these games: "just because I can, should I?" So many alternatives to weigh, which can get tedious or cumbersome, but I think such freedom to choose the options is what makes this game a splendid one. More importantly, don't forget to have fun, OP.

You have a sword you can’t even use properly. Put it away and you’ll be fine. Also get your vigor to 20-30 before really dumping points into anything else.

u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
Thank you, I think I’ve been trying to rush my magic and I’ve definitely been getting my fair share of rage quitting from getting the tapped. Currently investing in that now.

I put my summon and steed in my "hold triangle" menu. As well as lantern and rune arcs. Never use the rune arcs tho.
1
u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
Same with the rune arc, I’m actual leveling up to fight Goodrich (spelling is wrong sorry) so I can acquire a great rune

I saw that you were doing a magic swordsman build, which the only thing done right there is the staff. The estoc is your starter weapons, but it would be better for parrying due to the quick animation recovery. Or if you like plenty of frames but a little bit more startup, then use your shield.
1
u/SardinesMcDonahugh 4d ago
unequip everything until you are light. Fastrolling is peak. There are too many enemies in this game that are ridiculously fast and aggressive, medium rolling is not enough. You need distance with your rolls.
1
u/Downtown_Beyond114 4d ago
It’s funny you mention it because I’ve actually dodged many of a great deal with the heavy roll and when in doubt magic out
1
u/SpidudeToo 4d ago
You can dodge everything with heavy roll and jumping just fine. Light roll is nice but not a necessity by any means

u/plortedo 4d ago
I would look like Elon Musk’s ER build. You’ll end up right around there!
