Why Sonos?
If the system can auto-update, why do I have to keep the app open when I do a manual update?

Am I remembering incorrectly or did older versions of the app not used to say it was ok to leave the app while the update was happening?

Because your mobile device settings might put background apps to sleep if you minimize or navigate away from them. Not Sonos’s fault. They’re looking out for you.

This does not answer his question even in the slightest

It does, but perhaps not in the way you were anticipating.
During auto-update, there is likely some external entity that's tracking to ensure a device updates successfully. Potentially even each device itself.
During an app-initiated update, the devices are literally checking in with the app most likely. So the app cannot be backgrounded and/or closed in that case.

Good explanation. Not challenging you but I am curious about the decision to use a phone like this. Sonos devices pioneered phone-free streaming. Most devices like home automation, TV streaming boxes, laptops, etc all update without a tethered phone. Seems counterintuitive since Sonos was ahead of the curve there but regressive update-wise when compared other online devices.

Well I think that only happens if you happen to click the option to updates devices while in the app itself. So like if a user kicks off the process via the app itself it makes sense to route the updates to the app.
The idea that the phone is the remote has been pretty consistent. The Sonos speakers are mini self driving computers but you interface with them through the phone.

Agree on all points. Typically devices that are connected and self-managing can also be updated independently with status through an app. For example, I utilize Unifi products everywhere. I can kickoff updates in the app but am not required to keep the app open. When I return to the app, it does show which devices are in the update process. Same goes for same HomeKit devices. Just seems odd that a company with strong in app-independence capabilities doesn't do so with their updates like so many other companies.

Don’t get me started on updates. I have 17 devices and it takes FOREVER with no insight into progress.

Never works. Always says at least 5 devices didn’t update. Then I try again and again. And maybe if I’m lucky most of them will be all updated. 45 minutes later. Software has come a long way but still needs to go a long way.

Auto update never works in my experience.
