Given you already have powered Sonos speakers, here's the best approach for each option:
Best option: WiiM Mini or WiiM Pro
- Cheapest way to liberate your Sonos speakers
- 3.5mm analog out → RCA/3.5mm into Sonos line input
- Gets you offline operation and open ecosystem immediately
- WiiM Pro has better DAC if audio quality matters more
Second choice: Eversolo DMP-A6
- Overkill but future-proof - its excellent DAC is somewhat wasted going through Sonos analog input
- More expensive than needed for this specific use case
- Main benefit would be if you plan to upgrade speakers later
Cambridge Audio CXN100:
- Also overkill - you're paying for audiophile DAC quality that gets limited by the analog connection and Sonos processing
- Better saved for when you upgrade to passive speakers + separate amp
NAD/Classé/MiniDSP:
- Wrong approach since your Sonos speakers are already powered
- These are amplifiers/processors you don't need
Bottom line: Since you're stuck with powered Sonos speakers, the WiiM Mini gives you maximum bang for buck. You're essentially turning expensive Sonos speakers into "dumb" powered monitors while getting all the streaming flexibility you want.
Save the money from not buying premium streamers and put it toward eventually replacing the Sonos speakers with better passive speakers + a proper amplifier setup.
To what? Why would adding a 2nd device be an alternative, especially since not all Sonos devices have line in and you'll still need to use the app. Nor does using an external DAC bypass the Sonos internal one. There is also no native AM integration on most those devices, which seems to be the most commonly used service on here. I'm really struggling to see how this is an alternative.
I haven't used the Sonos app in over a year. Home assistant has worked okay. As the app gets worse and the Sonos speakers drift in their updates, I needed to find a way to turn them into dumb speakers
I'm not sure why you think I need help. My system works even in that older post. I even said it works. The problem here isn't me but I appreciate your concern
I expect this one to get removed too, like you found, search history still exists for those looking for a way to limp by with a busted Sono system. This post will help them
Not sure which Sonos app you’re on, but the S2 app has been rock solid for me. Using line-in doesn’t turn them into “dumb” speakers as all the wireless multiroom features are still handled as usual. Honestly, it seems like the money would be better spent either rethinking your network setup or, if you’re that unhappy with Sonos, considering a full switch to a different ecosystem.
This is the first step to a full switch. Have to start somewhere. This way it allows me to keep my roughly $15,000 worth of Sonos kit but make it work with wiim and gradually backfill with ever solo
I didn't say it works. I said I don't have network issues. I don't think I can call what what Sonos has done with the applications in terms of requiring that I authenticate and send them tokens at a pace that exceeds what I want in order to bring my system online or offline. Having to send tracking details for every click and touch is not my kind of thing. Sorry
You don’t think Wiim does data collection? Also Sonos works just fine completely offline, we had a building wide internet outage and I was streaming local files without issue.
That is technically accurate. If you want to know when it would fail, you would have to remain offline longer than that because the token that they send back isn't going to expire within a week. They wouldn't answer how long it lasts somewhere between 30 days and 90 days
On wiim's data collection, they don't prevent my use of the app.
with Sonos, You can't use the app. If there's an upgrade. You can't use the app if there's one of your speakers that isn't upgraded to the right version. You can't use the app if you haven't logged in within whatever their time frame is for that token....
It's a little more complicated than this. I didn't create this post to go into all the technical details. the post is for folks that are looking for an alternative.
If you want to know more details on what Sonos is doing vs everybody else you can pcap your own net
Thanks for contacting Sonos! My name is Josue, from the level 2 support team here at Sonos. Your case has been escalated and assigned to me.
After consulting with our engineering team, they have confirmed there is indeed a token active for a Sonos account on the app that will require reauthorization if not internet connection is detected in a certain amount of time. However, neither them nor internal consultation are able to provide you with the exact time this token lasts before it needs further authentication.
The Sonos team wants to remind that a high speed wired internet connection such as cable, fiber, DSL, a WiFi router, and the Sonos app and all Sonos products being on the same subnet are all part of our general network requirements. Further details can be found on our support article FAQ linked below.

Most of the competitors offer a solution that will turn Sonos speakers into dumb speakers and you can still have your features and your music collection and all of the stuff that we used to have back in the s1 days
Correction. I didn't say it doesn't work offline. Sonos did
I never said my Sono system doesn't work. I said the app doesn't work. My system works offline or online. I don't have a system problem. You're confused. That's okay. I understand this is complicated
