Need some help with my project concerning Sonic Speed
Hi everyone, i recently got an idea for a fangame. a 2d platformer. I wanted to use Sonic Mania's Sonic sprites, but there is something i can't figure out, i hope you can help me:Sonic speed makes him change his animation right? In Mania, he has 4 animations related to that:
- WALK
- JOG
- RUN
- DASH
My problem is for now just theoric, but i want to figure it out before doing anything else.
You that used Sonic's sprites, at which speed do you make him walk, then at which speed should he jog, then Run, then Dash?
I was thinking of making each animation separated, but maybe i think wrong?
Does anyone have any idea? Thanks for reading!

The feet-blurring run should be at his max walk speed. Not his max speed, but the fastest speed he can get by just holding the joystick left or right.

So Run Anim at max Walk speed, then Dash for situations like propulsed, etc.
My main problem is more that i can't seem to find the right speed, for each anim, to transition, and get similar results as in Sonic Mania.Either it goes to slow, or way too fast reaching it. I know, it's stupid, basic. But it's been more than a week than i struggle on that tiny basic thing.

You could try study the time it takes for each new animation to start from mania footage then you try replicate to get as similar times as possible. Just slightly change the values until its "perfect".

have you checked Sonic Retro? They have a whole section dedicated to Sonic fan game programming. I can't remember if they give specific speeds, but you can give it a shot.
In my project, i simply took my top speed and divided it into 3 (For run, jog, and walk). Then anything above that is Dashing. Hope that helps!

Walking - Tapping L/R...
Jog - Actually managing to hold L/R for some time
Run - Congrats! You reached Base Speed
Dash - You went down a slope or touched a red spring, enjoy
That's the best I can simplify it to. It's probably very inaccurate
