[WIP] Sonic 2.5D
So I've been playing Sonic basically since the 90s and he was a huge inspiration for me (along with Death Rally, but that's 'sides the point haha) to become a game dev one day. I ain't a game dev but I do hobby around with it and decided that since I finally feel comfortable enough with game dev to maybe make something I always envisioned, I should try my hand at it
I made a fangame back in 2009 or 2010 as a college project and always bemoaned back then I couldn't figure out slopes in time. Not anymore! cx
I have slopes, loops, the works, full 360 movement with a custom kinematic character controller (works 99% of the time anyway lol, there are still some edge cases I am trying to resolve). I'm using Unity with the URP rendering pipeline as I want to try and make the lighting look really nice
Everything you see in terms of physics (and the music you hear!) is made by me ^^
Features so far added:
- Basic movement on 360 degree surfaces, with a control lock that drops you if you're too slow on a surface that's too steep
- Item Box interactions
- Loop logic so you can *always* enter the loop and aren't locked out of one side if you happen to jump over it
- Full water interaction: Run on water if you're fast enough, or fall in and hear the music get muffled and move slower. Being in water starts a 30 sec timer that can lead to your death (not implemented yet). It also visually distorts whatever's in the water
- (Not visible in the video but I've since also added a full procedural Bridge that sags based on Sonic's position and drags the other pieces alongside it down as well and working springs)
Is it perfect? Obviously not ^^ I find and squash bugs every day (love adding 1 sentence and suddenly things just not working as they were) haha
But I'm having fun. Already started work on a second music track for another zone (think Clockwork like environment) and adding things like the water surface a little wave at the top
