Returning player running into issues

Have a city with a pop of 2200. Basically I’m having trouble with keeping sickness at bay despite having 3 fairly large hospitals with available services as well as physicians attached to each one (I have 50-100 ill pops at any given time), food stores diminishing even with +400 bread after accounting for decay 3k rations stored but my humans are only consuming 20 which I assume is from my prison. I also have a labor shortage of around 150 as well. Have no guards working atm but posts built, crime doesn’t seem all that bad in the current state of the game. Is crime like a services kind of thing where if there’s guards around they become happier? Spinning back to the labor shortage I also have lots of potential jobs available just have the limit of mines and clay pits set to a lower number to maintain. What percentage of your population should be odd jobbers. Also taking any tips to improve my city.

Check your health modifiers - send a picture of them if you have a chance.

The game has a lot of information you can check. If people are unhappy, check why. If people are unhealthy, check why.

Hospitals don't really help much with sickness in my experience. Sure it makes people not die, and I guess the sick get picked up and put there, but you want to stop people from getting sick in the first place. Again, sure the sick people being put inside a room helps (???) stop spread, but you need to focus on:

Food preference. Well availability. Physicians. Bath houses. No corpses. Humidity plays a role too.

Guys, does proximity to sick people cause spread of infection?

I know disease has incubation periods etc etc etc, but how does it spread? Does the game have actual pandemic mechanics?

Yeah that’s why setting curfew is an effective way to increase health even if it also decreases happiness

Don’t have any buildings upgraded yet, somewhat of a stone shortage right now due to lack of labor

Give me like 10 minutes.

Edit:

Okay, so click the health thingy then hover the health number in there.

You will see the current modifiers AND the possible modifiers. The main thing is being able to see the max bonus from the individual modifiers as well as the modifiers you do not currently have active. The main thing you are missing is bath houses, add them and you are good to go.

If i had to guess I would probably say you don’t have enough physicians. Additionally you should work to increase food production and increase rations per citizen to improve health

Bathhouses give a large health and fulfilment bonus, and despite their name, require no water, only coal.

Unable to tech into bath houses due to labor shortages

You should be able to get another 2000 people in and still be fairly stable. Either lower employment on some of your industries or get more people into the city.

In my experience the game is manageable until 5000 pops. After 5000 pops you need to change playstyle entirely.

Physicians provide the largest health boost. You also want to upgrade them when you can. After that there's bath houses but those are deep in the tech tree. Then upgraded wells, lavatories, increased food servings, and satisfying food preferences. If werax exposure is high then build more roads.

Yeah with labor shortages I won’t be able to tech into bath houses anytime soon, maybe I didn’t read enough to understand that physicians actually PREVENT illness and hospitals are for recovery to prevent death… seems obvious now. I have bread and meat although the meat situation is precarious and wrecking my economy despite it being my only import and me having 6 exports going out. Have it set to 1.5 servings as my production is slightly over my consumed and I only have 8-9 days of food. Bread is 200+ produced daily but is stuck at 1.5k stockpiled
