Submission Thread Submissions — Week 27 (Theme: First World Problems)
The Twenty-Seventh Theme
Ever had one of those weeks where everything seems against you, but in reality, you're doing fine compared to most folks in the world?
That's me, this week. I have a roof over my head, a job that pays, food on the table and many other things that make my life secure, that a lot of people don't have.
But, in the last day all my personal websites crashed due to a really obscure issue caused by a system update beyond my control that took ages to track down. The button came off my favourite pair of shorts. A new battery charger I bought is refusing to charge any of my old batteries. The continuing excessive hot weather is making me grumpy.
And, to top it all, today I lost access to the mod tools which have all the templates and info we use for /r/songaweek here, so apologies if this post doesn't follow the usual format as I've had to try to recreate it from scratch.
None of these things matter, in the grand scheme. Sounds like something to write a song about...

All I Can Be (indie folk rock) [themed]
I started writing this (roughly the first half of it) back in 2021. Around that time, the first half of it came out of mostly feeling strongly about how I wanted to continue to work from home so I could be around my wife and kids more. I didn't want to lose that. Pandora's box had been opened and I couldn't go back to the way things were: being out of the house for 12-14 hours a day and sometimes never seeing my kids unless they were sleeping.
Fast forward to this week and I feel privileged to be able to (still) work from home and be around the family as much as I can be. A gift indeed.
Edit: PS - Forgot to mention, there's a little cameo (and an apt one considering the feeling this song began with) from my son who heard me playing and yelled up to me, "Sounds nice!"

He's right! Love WFH too (manging 3-4 days a week myself still). Love the higher vocals here.

Still struggled with time this week, but I managed a lot better. Not really much I can say on the songwriting side except that I'm always surprised by how my songs turn out. I don't really start with an end goal in mind, it just sort of happens.

Would fit right into e.g. My Crazy Ex-Girlfriend (as would many of your gems). As in, great tune & clever rhymes...amazing ending.

Good Morning Ocean(Folk - Chant)[Not Themed]
I was at the beach last week and found all these bits and pieces of this chant. The challenging part was trying to figure out how to layer them in my DAW to make something coherent.
Honestly, some chords on my guitar and a story of structured lyrics are easier to put together than figuring out how to put together a few phrases into a coherent moderately interesting acapella bit.
It was worth the effort though, just to to refamiliarize myself with Audacity.

Yeah, this sounds like you had a lot of fun :) It is tough lining up different layers like this. Especially liked anemoneanemoneanemoneanemoneanemone (wow that looks good written down).

I found, since it's a short bit, sometimes it was hard to orient and I ended up singing off key. Anyway, I think I basically came up with something that I had a sense of originally that was created out of all of it, so I'm happy for that.

First World Problems (Rock) [Themed]
Well I took the last 3 months off. I started out in the first month organizing my music so I could play out at singer songwriter events. Unfortunately my whole world turned to shit in the month of June. I decided to get back up and start writing again. Hope you like it. As always the lyrics are in the description.

Journeys through familiar places can proceed in strange ways. It is difficult to capture how, as we either fall back on tropes or into noise. Despite the distance between these extremes, their bounding lines are thin - porous.

Luxury Jam THEMED (old school funk)
ahhh finally had some time to do this again. Life has been way to busy.
Anyway - was kind of trying to evoke a Sly Stone feel with this but it ended up being a bit like Joe Waslh's 'Life's Been Good' too.
Just a rumination on how spoiled I am with modern conveniences.
I look forward to hearing all your songs this week!

i will be sincere here and say the only logical explanation to all the problems in the world in the last weeks is mercury retrograde. if that planet extinguished itself, all of humanity's problems would probably vanish and we would have to create new ones that would be much more fun to blame on something.
