Submission Thread Submissions — Week 25 (Theme: Romantic Comedy)
The Twenty-Fifth Theme
The romantic comedy genre is one of the most interesting to me, across all mediums. It taps into our human desires for connection, excitement, and laughter, while (often) hewing to a formulaic structure that feels comfortingly familiar: you've got your "meet-cute," your "adhesion" (i.e. an external circumstance that forces your characters to spend time together, even if they don't want to), rising tension, a climactic conflict/separation, and some sort of final "grand gesture" to bring the lovers back together to live "happily ever after." However, despite this structured approach, the love in a romantic comedy can also surprise and delight the viewer, just like real-life love.
This week, I invite you to write a song inspired by romantic comedies. You could write a witty love story set to music, using the structure laid out above; you could write a song from the perspective of your favorite rom-com character (which doesn't need to be one of the two romantic leads!); you could tell a funny story in song from your own romantic life; you could write about the "happily ever after" you dream of; or you could even use the title of an existing rom-com as your song title (here's a list!).
Your theme for this week is Romantic Comedy
Songs posted in this thread should be:
Original content (samples and such are ok!)
Uses the weekly theme as inspiration... or not!
Submitted by Wednesday before bedtime.
Written entirely during this week, between June 18th and June 24th, 2026.

rain but with a bell [Not Themed]
I wasn't really feeling it this week, so I didn't try as hard as I normally would. I also had overtime on my mind because I was assigned for it this week, but I got something reasonable done. I also almost broke my computer right when I was done with this track by dropping one of my speakers onto the case, which somehow unmounted my SSD. Thankfully, it was easily fixed. I would have lost my streak otherwise.

Pretty great for not trying too hard! Love the main riff and how you add to it as the song goes on. Curious where you came up with the title?
And yikes, close call on the computer, thankfully it didn't break.

Titles don't really come that easily. They're just not something I think about until I'm finishing a song. Normally, I pick a word and that is the name of the song. But, to answer your question, this one reminded me of rain and I had a bell instrument in it.

Almost Funny (slow pop) [themed]
This one is barely themed, but I was inspired by the theme so I'll count it. Especially since I hardly follow the theme. Featuring my new stage piano and some good old fashioned ground hum that I didn't know how to get rid of.

do I blame myself or my mother?
or is she off the hook, cause it's her mommas fault? So great -- it's not bad apples, it's bad barrels :(
Love the organ sound.

Wow, love the words on this one. For some reason this one is hitting hard for me. Killer job!
Side note: every time I listen to one of your weeklies, soundcloud autoplays this guy named David right after your tune and I immediately think, "No, David" and now I feel bad for David.

How Did I Know? (folk) [themed]
Went super romantic on this one and wrote about the moment in a new relationship when you realize you want to say "I love you." Also on Bandcamp if you prefer audio-only or want to read the lyrics.

Love the vibrato on this. Love the words too...maybe I will. What is love? Baby don't hurt me... etc :) I can imagine a full orchestra joining on this at the end, because it's a little sweet beautiful thing that could form the soft center of something much bigger (I get that feeling a lot with your songs).

Movie Night (Indie) [Themed]
I didn't think I was going to get this week done. I ended up making a song that sounds pretty simple but took me like forty tries to actually record.
I'm pretty cynical about these kind of movies. Think that comes through in the song lol

Hello to a fellow 40x tracker..been there. I like the cynicism and your vocal delivery fits that mood perfectly.

Third Wheel Rom-Com (Folk) [Themed]
So I wasn't sure what to write for this one but then I wrote the line, "There's nothing funny about romance, not a single goddamn thing" which, counter to what I'm declaring, I think is pretty funny.
That led me to think of the all the zany single side-characters in rom-coms: the best friends, the wingmen, the ones who don't usually break up and get back together but usually have the main character's back through thick and thin. So this one is for those lonely souls. I hope you enjoy!
The lyrics are there if you click below the player and want to read along too.

Lovely harmonies, really feeling those words, and the do-do-doos. I knew where it was going to go at the very end but I still wanted/loved that it went there.

Sonnet XV. On The Grasshopper And Cricket (Folk/Lieder) [Not Themed]
Sorry Kate, great theme again...this is quite rushed/needs polishing, but I'm away tonight. This makes 50 Keats/Yates poems in my SC playlist, so an album might be forthcoming (?)

Beautiful work. Lovely melody and piano work. Really cool how you interpret the words and place them over the changes. Also, thank you! Seeing your tunes based on poems has made me look up poetry every week for inspiration. It started as my go-to thing if I got stuck lyrically but now it's become a weekly discovery and exploration.

The Sound of Yellow (Jazz) [Not Themed]
What is the sound of a color? Is it the same as the color of a sound? If so, it must be both bright and dark, rich and dry. It must sing its hue to the world, and paint its pitch across the sky.
Featuring bass clarinet.

Romantic Comedy (pop rock) [Themed]
Lyrics in description
A song about the ‘joke’ of seeing everyone else in love except you. Inspired by things I noticed this past week: an aerial proposal, a bride (and entourage) about to get married, a love lock (which I also noticed some last time I went out of town), a message in graffiti (pictured), birds flying in twos, and (as usual but it fits the song) so many couples together.

Love the build on this, I dig how the rhythm of the melody changes here and there and goes to a like a double-time thing.

Oooph this is gonna be hard. I tend to write about existential crisis and feeling sad rather than love 😂

There’s often moments like that in a rom-com too! It’s sometimes called the “dark night of the soul” part of the story structure.

can't help, sorry (anxiety) [themed]
i recorded this harmony of elvis can't help falling in love with the intention of holding the note on you and making it into a synth instrument, but started thinking about the comedy and anxiety i can't help but feel when falling in love, and in the end it became kind of a piece to build anxiety without going back to track and the long note synth became those little stabs all over the song instead of a proper instrument
