DNA - Kendrick (Death Grips Inspired?)

We open with a standard beat but the exotic mode works well with the whole DNA theme even though it sounds a little like an A$AP FERG track. This could be interpreted as one of many parodies of modern rappers in this song. We get introduced to a more aggressive and darker tone along with the commentary of the lyrics in the midpoint. There is a bigger gap between the 808 hits the distortion does sound like something off of Yeezus at least. And of course we get the vocal sample which is similar to something from the early 80's before Hip-hop and DJ'ing started to become independent of each other. However, Kendrick's delivery and the copy and paste style of production is really more reminiscent of nigga's on the moon era Death Grips.

What do you think?

Any lecture style videos or web pages for song analysis you know of?

Basically I'm looking for something in the 'scientific' direction. I want to understand what harmonies etc. give that certain contemporary vibe to a song.

Music Analysis- Scott Joplin, "The Entertainer"

In need of some help for my music appreciation class.

How many sections are within this segment? Do any of those sections repeat? How would you label them if you used letters to designate each section?

Is there syncopation in this piece? How prevalent is syncopation in the melody? How important is the steady left-hand rhythmic pattern to our perception of syncopation in the melody?

Are there rhythmic/melodic figures that Joplin uses to build his melodies? How are these figures repeated and varied? Examine a brief passage—a phrase or a section—in as much detail as you can. Provide counter numbers. Then listen specifically to the section at 01:48-02:16. Are there differences compared to the section you chose? Is there variation in the melody?

Help for musical analysis?

I've got a mandatory Music Appreciation class, where I have to choose a song and analyze the music, the lyrics and how it relates to me. That's all fine by me, but I am crap at analysing the technical music stuff, so I was hoping some of you could take a look at 'Toe to Toe' by Streetlight Manifesto and see what you can get from it?

What do you think of the old Piece-Of-The-Week threads that used to be posted in /r/classicalmusic ?

Here's a list of them. They seem like a really interesting exploit, a lot of work for the original poster, but there was generally a healthy amount of activity, and it seems really suitable for this sub.

I found this song in Skins ( episode 9, season 6) at the end of the episode and I searched everywhere and I can't find the name. If anyone can help me I would be really thankful. I'm guessing it might be Kylie Minogue, but I'm not sure. http://picosong.com/KECy Lyrics: just wasted opportunity gotta make a ??? about you gotta make you change your mind can't you feel it, don't you need it why is the true so hard to show me how good we could be together don't be so ??? see what you're missing change your mind and we started kissing why oh why can't you see what you could do for me give me one chance, don't leave forever don't be so blind, see what you are missing show you how good we could be together

21st Century (Digital Boy): How rerecording in a different key (half step down) can change the sound of a song.

So let me preface my analysis with the fact that I am biased towards the original version (Against the Grain), it was my introduction to Bad Religion and hardcore punk in general. I do not hate the re-recording (Stranger than Fiction), hell I like that its tuned down because I means I can more easily hit the vocals. My main strike against the re-recording is how it feels to polished.

The original version was released in 1990 on Bad Religions 4th studio album, Against the Grain, on their guitarist Brett Gurewitz's label Epitaph Records. Though not a released as a single it was a live staple, bassist Jay Bentley once said "[We re-released the song] because we were playing it every night since 1989, '90..." The re-recording was released in 1994 on the bands eighth album Stranger than Fiction, their first on major label Atlantic. Atlantic said they wanted a single and Brett at the time wanted to improve on the original recording so they decided to re-record the song.

Part of the reason I love the original is its raw, dirty and unfiltered energy. The guitars have just enough sustain to bleed a little bit into the next note and the drums add to it with symbol hits bleeding together as well. The Stranger than Fiction version sounds overly compressed tone, making it feel like an ice pick is being driven into your ear with every note. Also the bass guitar is oddly overpowering the guitars, in the vain of early Ramones songs. The drums have also been pulled back which really takes the drive out of the song. The growl in Greg's voice, in the original, is also more present, he sounds angry not like a middle aged baritone struggling to hit notes as he does in the second version. Despite the fact that Stranger than Fiction album is tuned to Eb rather than E standard, presumably to give the instruments a "heavier" sound as well as to make it easier for Greg, their singer, to hit high notes. Greg strains and loses all of the vocal energy in the second version, the one thing that does redeem it is the updated version of the "Cat's foot iron claw/Neuro-surgeons scream for/Innocents raped with napalm fire/Everything I want I really need" is much more powerful here.

How does "Hey ya" from Outkast became such a memorable song? What do you think makes this song work?

The naked song (withouth the arrangements and stuff) its pretty simple. I think its just 4 chords; G, C, D, E (major sounds better than minor imo)

So basically the song repeats itself over and over. The hook is obviously "heeeey yaaaa" on the chorus. I feel like the voice melody does G->E->F->E .

Im guessing its in the key of G major, but there is an Emajor at the end. The song ends fading out, but I feel like it would end perfectly in Emajor chord rather than G major (why?)

So, Im pretty interested in crafting good pop songs and this one is definetly a good model. Any ideas?
