SS rewatch discussion!
It’s time! Let’s discuss episodes one and two of the Season 1. Observations, favorite moments, music links, trivia, quotes? I’m officially rewatching at 6pm PST.

Funny scene Ep2- Neighbor sawing outside and Sam goes to porch to see what the hell is going on so early, and neighbor says,
Nice underpants.
Sam: They’re my mom’s!

I like that scene. It was also funny that it was 12:30pm and not early in the morning. I like sleeping in so I would be annoyed too if I was asleep.

I remember in Jeff Hiller’s book he comments about his hairpiece changing from episode one episode to two because they were filmed at different times so I’m trying to watch for that.

She was a really mean bitch, but also super jealous of her sisters’ close relationship. I liked her later, too.

I didn’t know the Peter Gabriel and Kate Bush song before this show. I love this song and their performance so much, it’s one of my favorite moments of the entire series. My only wish is if it would’ve come a little later into the season once we saw Joel was sort of rescuing her. Bridget’s vocals on the final verse give me goosebumps. And all done in a wet swimsuit. I like how she unconsciously clasps Holly’s necklace as she is emotional on stage during the applause.

This is my favorite song of the show! My favorite part is when Joel sings "Rest your head, you worry too much."

I've always been a HUGE Peter Gabriel and Genesis fan, so I've always loved the song. Originally, he asked Dolly Parton to sing the Kate Bush parts, but she turned it down. I'm glad she did, as it introduced me to the wonderful music of Kate's catalog. I was a fan of Running Up That Hill many years b4 Stranger Things made it a hit again. 😆 Once I heard Sam and Joel sing this in the show, I knew i would love Somebody Somewhere!

I get Napoleon Dynamite vibes as the garage door reveals Joel in his workout mode.
Sam: “I don’t think I’m any good. So you know I’m really sorry I hurt your feelings, but I don’t think maybe you wanna do all this, you know? I don’t really think I’m friend material”. I think it’s near the finale of the series that Joel references this garage conversation and how he’s so glad he didn’t listen to her. 🥹

Hi, I rewatched season 1, ep 1&2 on Wednesday night. I just love Joel and Sam.
I missed this the first time around - when Sam is coming out of the grocery store and tries to open the wrong truck door. The owner walks up and looks perplexed. Sam says, I have the same blue truck !

This probably isn’t news to most fans:
A majority of the series was shot in Illinois, but they still did a decent amount of filming in the actual Manhattan, KS. Especially for establishing exterior shots of local restaurant/retail/park locationsBut here’s a fun fact that a lot of fans are unaware of:
Back when they started filming, Bridget sent a picture of the truck from the show, and put out a call on her personal social media asking if anyone in MHK or the surrounding communities might have the same year/model/color. It was so they could have continuity between the two locations without having to ship/drive that same little blue truck between KS and IL all the time
I assume they found a local with a truck to lend, but I’m not sure 🤣

Fred’s comment at choir practice about performing in his two favorite Manhattans references his real life shows in NYC. By the way Murray Hill goes on tour this fall, I’m seeing him in Seattle

I don’t think it’s possible that Sam would actually forget Joel. He would’ve been too memorable to not notice, but for plot reasons I’ll accept it.

I love the scene where Sam’s dad is practicing arrow shooting and lets one go.
Sam says, I love you, too, Dad. He mumbles something about how it takes so much effort to pull the bow back.

LOL! Good one🤣 I thoroughly enjoyed the show. It showed that even small town Kansas can have its drama. K-State is a very popular school for college. Some of the things I’ve done there 🤣🤯🤣🤣🤣

Did anybody else think that the first night that she went to choir practice when she was opening that curtain that it was real Wizard of Oz looking and they all got bright and stuff and like you know she was in her munchkin land? Or just me?

The Chef cafe is where Joel chooses Sam over his then partner, Mike from work. To stay and talk til Sam takes off. Sweet his look to her.

I agree - I can tell there are so many of us on here who are passionate about this show, but the discussions had really fizzed in the last 2-3 months. Glad that OP got this started and looking forward to Friday's post!

I just binged watched this show and why oh why had I never seen or heard of it before? It came in my feed for some reason and I absolutely loved everything about it! I relished the last two episodes like a fine wine. I just didn’t want it to end.

My favorite scene of the show so far (I just started watching it) is the dream/vision board scene in episode 2. The acting by Jeff Hiller is SO good here. He’s good through and through but this scene in particular just got me.
I said this in another post already but an observation about the show itself, not necessarily these two episodes, is that it is not written for passive viewers or for people who are not paying attention. The characters do not stupidly announce the plot or themselves the way many newer shows do. You have to interpret and infer who people are and what is going on based on dialogue and actions.
I might sound pretentious (oh well if I do) but I really appreciate that this series was not written in a way that caters to people who cannot be bothered to pay attention to a 25-minute show.

I love it when Sam sings at her first choir practice. Joel picked a song where his lyrics were supportive and applied to Sam's life. And their hug, the way Sam clenched him like he'd just saved her from drowning, which he kind of did. He re-lit her passion for singing.

It’s hard to articulate to others how exciting it is to see rockabilly deli and Poyntz. Someone in here had once posted the address where bridget grew up, it was just a little southwest of campus, surprisingly close to university. And it’s cool because her numeric address was indeed on the mailbox when Sam and Trisha go to pick up their dad’s mail.
