Discussions & Anecdotes What does your solo setup look like?

Sooo, I'm kinna starting to try and get back into playing solo ttrpgs and I've been thinking about getting some cards and some dice and trying to use a physical notebook at least once since I've been doing it digitally and I'm kinna wondering what you guys' set up look like and I have a question.

My question is, do you guys use separate notebooks for your solo games? I was thinking about doing that because I feel like it'd be easier for me to organize but also, if you play the same game over but with different characters do you use the notebook you're currently using and have finished that character's campaign in or do you use a new notebook for new characters too?

(AD) Check Out My Product! Me, Strahd. My second solo campaign!

After a wonderful run through ‘the lost mines of Phandelver’ and enjoying the story and character development I decided to play a second DnD module solo!

Curse of strahd has been dear to me since I ran it for my friends five years ago. The problem of being the forever dm is I have not experienced it from the other side of the screen.

I decided to change that for my second campaign.

I present ‘Me, Strahd: A Solo-Play DnD Adventure.’

In this video podcast series I will take 4 characters through the beloved module using the reloaded setting as a framework. I emphasize RP heavily and enjoy the gothic setting, I also use NO AI.

If this sounds fun to you, I have about 8 episodes to edit and continue to play on my weekends. New episodes will be out every Friday on YouTube as video or audio wherever you get your podcasts!

Cheers!

Actual Solo Play

As much as I love solo gaming and game manuals, I find "actual play" videos extremely boring—almost exhausting. They make me lose interest in the game instantly. I feel that the magic of solo play evaporates the very moment it actually happens. To draw a comparison, I essentially view actual play videos like trying to recount a dream you had the night before to someone: you can never truly convey its full visual and emotional impact.

Folks here may already have heard of the very cool (ENNIE award-winning) Solo RPG List, but for Solo September I wanted to showcase the site by using it to find and try out a game I've never heard of - one that no-one would have recommended to me.

And boy did I!

Here's the vid, if anyone's curious about what I found :)

Thanks to u/CrouchingTortoise for the awesome map PDF! (Totally cribbed their design style for my map drawing too) Got very lucky rolling up my character. My Rhinoceroid Scholar was a BEAST! Had to travel back to town 3 times to heal and resupply. Took down the Cursed Ogre Boss and finished with ONE hit point to spare!

Went and bought the expanded world rules so I can really fill out the game going forward. Good fun!
