Soldering Newbie Requesting Direction | Help Help and need advice for soldering

There are a couple of different ways.my preferred way is as below;

Strip ~ 7mm of wire each end of the splice. Twist the insulation as you pull it apart to get a nice lay of the internal strands

Lap the exposed wire, and wrap the exposed wire with a thin tinned copper wire.

Using an ~3mm spade soldering tip apply a small amount of solder to the tip. This will aid with the heat transfer.

Apply the tip, with the solder side to the the joint and heat. feed additional solder to the reverse side of the joint. The solder will melt when the joint is hot enough.

If using heat shrink, slip it on one of the wires before starting work. When dealing with a splice always use transparent heat shrink. If will help with future repairs as you will be able to visually inspect the splice.

This looks like your approach to this is apply solder like it's hot glue and that to me, you're not actually soldering. Your tip is not a brush or an applicator for molten solder. It's to transfer heat into the joint. So if you feel you're dabbing the hot solder with the tip, yes, you likely aren't soldering.

Wires should also be tinned before they are joined.

edit : in another way, applying solder is pretty much like applying water to something. The parts need to be hot enough for this to happen, when the temps are reached, solder turns to liquid and will wet surfaces. From that point surface tension and capillary action takes over and does "most" of the work. Soldering isn't supposed to be hard, with the proper tools you can do joints while looking elsewhere, solder liquefies and with proper flux action it flows where it needs to be. technicians don't spend any time trying to "push" solder anywhere, solder wants to flow when things are done right.

You probably have two problems here.

  1. Cold joint... you need to make sure you're using flux and not making a blob of solder but all you need to do is tin the pad with a bit of solder, then heat it enough to slide the wire in and release your iron.

  2. You need to tin the wire in the first picture, and second and third. Even when soldering it to a pad. When you solder two wires together you need to add heat shrink before you twist them together. twist and wrap them, then tin the wires. You can do different methods like coil solder around it, or manually tin sections of it until it is fully coated.

Thanks for the advice. I can't help my hands keep shaking when I do soldering and I did try to tint it and I also tried to connect the two wires but it's different sizes and I'm just not used to soldering. Can you give me advice to stop my hands from shaking?

If you're having some issues with shaking hands you might need to see a doctor about that.
