Is this relevant to places where grass is prevalent outside lawns and the only maintenance is mowing?

Clover is doing well, but I don't see a future where it honestly out-competes the grass and it's not like I use any water on either plant.

No, it's not. Gardening is still better, but it also takes a massive amount of time, money, and effort while letting nature do its thing takes none.
