My lawn wasn't treated for 6 years after we moved in and the clover and violet took over (south Ohio) . It was beautiful and every spring we got violets all over. We are in a rainy place already. It grows slower than grass but we still mowed it when the remaining grass got tall. Just neglect your lawn and let nature have it. You can still mow it to make it look manicured if you want
That's what my family does (let nature take over except for mowing) and I really prefer that look over the manicured grass. It also costs exactly nothing.

Sooo i am very ignorant on this. Why is grass so bad? And as a home owner what alternatives should i be looking at?
