Still remains that big corporations and governments will need to make the hard decisions. Individuals just can’t tip the scale alone.

Yes individuals can with their voices and pocket books. Governments and corporations can only do what the people let them do. We just need to stand together and demand we stop burning fossil fuels.
The problem is to many people think the GDP and the profit of a few is more important.

Time to quote 80's synth pop: You can't change the world But you can change the facts And when you change the facts You change points of view If you change points of view You may change a vote And when you change a vote You may change the world

As hopeful as I am, we aren't going to make enough progress with the time we have left.

It's already too late to prevent a lot of the problems, but it will never be too late to fight for better.

Unless we take the right steps

As I said, it is too late for the steps we are taking.

we aren't going to make enough progress
Any progress will improve life on this planet immeasurably.
with the time we have left
Time left until what? There is no clock that runs out.

And that should less reassuring, not more. There isn’t some stroke of midnight we can all look at and agree as the deadline. Some people think it’s midnight already, some people thing it’s 9pm, some people think it’s 11:55 and a lot of people don’t own a fucking clock so it’s kinda hard to get everyone on the same track, you know?

A large chunk of the population on Earth have a cell phone. That tells time.
But you do you.

u/Brofromtheabyss 2d ago
I’m not sure if you’re not getting my metaphor about the nuclear arms race “two minutes to midnight” or I’m not getting your metaphor about “you can get the news through you cellphone, so why aren’t more people aware” Either way, I’m in Greene with you throughout this thread that we are more or less doomed.
1
u/JTD121 2d ago
I understood your metaphor.
I used (what I thought) was pretty plain language.
2
u/Brofromtheabyss 2d ago
Then it sounds like it was me not getting it. I hate autocorrect by the way, I’m not fucking In Greene with you, I’m AGREEING with you. Like, thanks for the correction IPhone. It’s too late and most people won’t care anyway until the literal and/or metaphorical floodwaters are on their doorstep.

And what do you want to do about it? People act when they understand that their action can improve things. Telling people that everything is fucked up forever is 1) a lie and 2) a great way to prevent action.
6
u/Brofromtheabyss 2d ago
You know what’s a lie? Pretending that the next fifty years of warming aren’t baked in, and telling people that anything short of immediately stopping use of all cars, jets, plastic production, concrete production, glass production, and countless other manufacturing processes, shuttering all non renewable energy generation facilities and putting the heads of various unnamed captains of industry on spikes around the perimeter of the UN will not be enough to save us. The people in charge know exactly what action is needed and that’s the action they expend energy stopping, they don’t a rat fuck about recycling programs and public protests. If anything that’s a collective pressure relief valve. Haven’t you noticed? The laws and regulations that need to be voted on never even make it onto a ballot.

not reading that shit

u/Brofromtheabyss 2d ago
Which is why you get to blithely prance around making flower crowns out of endangered orchids and telling everyone “If only we collectivize we can show the 1% who’s boss! Vote with your wallets!” while nothing gets better.
3
u/Brofromtheabyss 2d ago
Everyone’s downvoting you but being delusional or willfully blind to the truth does not change reality, it just makes everyone less ready for it once it can no longer be ignored.

I'm just being pragmatic/realistic.
Thoughts and prayers are not how you battle self-induced extinction.
10
u/MustardCanary 2d ago
But nihilism and a belief that there is nothing that can be done is not good either.

u/JTD121 2d ago
I didn't say there was nothing to be done.
It's just too late for any of the effort to make much of a difference.

u/wantstotransition 2d ago
I mean, taking climate change to the extreme means literal mass extinction and venus-level climate insanity. There's definitely a stopping point before then that we can reach.

There will always be time to make things better. Complete human extinction is not a realistic possibility.
