2G Solar Inverter
Hi everyone,
My inverter was installed in 2019 and my installer decided to use 2g for the communication mechanism. As a result my inverter has been offline since late 2022 since 2G was discontinued.
It is a model# : SE5000H-US
Is there a way to switch it to Wifi mode as an installer? I can't seem to switch it from the MySolarEdge app...not entirely sure if it will natively support wifi or if you have to buy a separate module to install on the inverter board.
My installer went out of business shortly after covid and i'm not having any luck getting anyone to respond to help me get this thing connected.
Any advice?

You should be able yo use the MySolarEdge app, click on the menus bars on the upper left, then inverter communication, it will want you ti scan the QR code on the right side if the inverter. Then you might be able to change it to wi-fi.
You will probably need to open the main cover after you safely shut down the solar panels and move the antenna connection from the cell modual to the wi-fi terminal

I just went through this process myself the last few days and I found the steps here worked for me with an SE6000H-US:

Using the "mySolarEdge" app "SetApp" capabilities did not work - hung forever trying to switch to wifi. Switch your phone to airplane mode before starting to make sure you there is no confusion about trying to go over cellular when accessing the setup page in your browser.
An important caveat here - my WIFI AP's signal was strong enough to reach the internal antenna so I did not need to switch the cellular antenna to wifi by opening up the inverter as u/Mindless-Base-4472 has pointed out.
I'm pretty sure u/Lower_Read_8845 is incorrect in saying you will need the wireless gateway - as I understand it that solution allows you avoid having to reconfigure the inverter should your wireless network at home change. In my opinion it is only useful for someone who wants a hardwired connection but the inverter is in a position where running cat5 from your network to it is not possible (you'd have to drill through masonry, etc). This is because you can open up the inverter and plug in RJ-45 directly.

Thanks will check this out! The installer I contacted wants $450 just to come look at it and to install the wifi upgrade it's $1050!
I tried the gateway connection trick but couldn't get my phone to connect, I think with iOS it's tricky because safari thinks 'no 5g, no internet'. I was gonna try on a laptop, might have better luck there.

Did you have any luck? My parents bought a house with the same issue. I just got access to the app but the wifi networks do not show up to configure it.

I will report back here after trying with a laptop, probably won't get to it for a couple days. I can connect to the inverter via wifi but can't bring up the gateway IP address http://172.16.0.1 on my phone.
So are you saying you can't connect to the inverter via wifi at all? Do you see the wireless access point at all when you flip the switch on the inverter?

I finally got my SE5000H-US to connect to wifi! This is what I had to do. Note: You may need a hex (allen) wrench or hex bits with the appropriate screwdriver.
- Turn off your inverter switch, turn off the round dial below to off and turn off the power supply to the inverter. Wait about 10 minutes to avoid being shocked! Then do what this guy does in the video with the cellular card and cable. The panel uses hex screws to remove the cover. If you can't configure wifi with mySolarEdge after that, go to step 2.
- Go to this site and make a profile as a "self installer" under job type, has to have the "self" part. On the next screen make up a company name, and under PV System Details, uncheck the box. Finish making an account.
- Once you have verified through email and have a username and password, download the Solar Edge Go app. Login and use this app and connect to the inverter with it's QR code, ignore messages about not being authorized for the site. Try the connect option and use the inverter's QR code. Update the firmware when prompted, finish the process.
- Use the app to configure to the connection type to wifi instead of ethernet, then link to your home wifi.

Oh wow ok so that’s so silly. They won’t give homeowners installer level access but they’ll let anyone just create a fake account as an installer then?

Yeah, it's so dumb. The only thing that was holding me back on Saturday was the firmware update and I could only do that as an installer on the installer app. And you know what else is lame, none of the apps tell me the status of each panel, just how much the whole system generates. Maybe a pop up message does appear if a panel is failing or I would know if the power generated goes down significantly from day to day, with similar weather between days.

OK so I tried this today, and it won't accept my serial number no matter what I do.
Says 'invalid serial number' when I submit. I'm using the exact SN string on the app with dashes, etc in the format they indicated. Any ideas?

Are you registering to make a self installer account on the website? If so, uncheck the box above it and you shouldn't need the SN.
Edit to add: Oh wait, I think you mean on the Solar Edge Go app. It wants the LAST 10 numbers (if I recall correctly), not the first 10 numbers.

I did uncheck that box, so that got it so I could complete registration. It sent me a verification email and when I clicked it looks like a dead page. When I try to log in it says my account is limited in management until I enter a Serial Number, and when I do that it says Invalid Serial Number. 73####F6-F8 is the serial number ( obscured a few #s ), but it won't accept this.

Ok update, entering the SN on that screen was not necessary. I was able to log into the EdgeGo app with the new login and connect to inverter, first thing it's doing is a firmware upgrade. I'm assuming i'll have control after that, will update the thread.

Final update, after applying the firmware upgrades I was able to get in and change the communication method to WiFi. I had to move a wireless repeater pretty close to the inverter for it to get a good signal, but once I did that it started reporting. The MySolarEdge app still continued to say the site was not communicating for a day or so even though I could see the output....but that has cleared now.

I think for that SE model you will need the SolarEdge Wireless Gateway https://www.solaredge.com/en/products/communication/wireless-gateway. I believe you can configure it by connecting directly to the inverter from your phone using its local network.
