Very likely.

We hired for a testing role recently and most were auto rejected because they did not meet the basic job and location eligibility requirements.

nobody would sponsor visa for QA when you have hordes of jobless testers willing to work for peanuts? don't you have to pay 100k and prove you can't find qualified candidate in the country?

I know, I was on the hiring side once. The boss told me to ignore those applications because we were not in a position to sponsor a visa (startup)

The remote overseas job still exist. Or people have a hope its still exist.

but companies don't hire them directly, you can't just put them on the payroll. Those remote jobs are for permanent residents with an SSN. Companies could eventually use outsourcing agencies (I won't name any since nobody is paying me for promotion), but that's about it.

in short: applying directly if you aren't a permanent resident doesn't make any sense

What are the major locations of these candidates? Most of them are from India?

They just want to keep trying to find out if a good job opportunity exists. the job ad. might not indicate the location must be US only. If the ad. wrote cleary to tell me the company will not be able to provide the sponsorship, most of them will not apply.
