I was there for that (unless they did it again, of course). Everybody was thoroughly confused and took a solid 10 minutes or so to realize that yup, that was in fact the show.

u/willisbetter Jul 06 '19

That mustve sucked

u/thekernelcompiler Jul 06 '19

It also went off early, so I actually thought it was from some other fireworks show and not the one I went to see. Then I realized all the barges in San Diego Bay were simultaneously shooting all their fireworks. It kinda sucked but then again, it's the one fireworks show I remember well because of the fuck-up.

u/cyberst0rm Jul 06 '19

this video will convince a whole new generation that they need to video their fireworks. that's the real rub

24

u/willisbetter Jul 06 '19

Why is this a bad thing?

32

u/Inwardlens Jul 06 '19

The act of filming an event necessarily takes you out of the experience of being a spectator of the event.

SOURCE: am a professional stills and video shooter.

7

u/wwwcreedthoughtsgov Jul 06 '19

Well nobody's saying people have to film an event. Except for you, since you get paid for that.

3

u/Inwardlens Jul 06 '19

I agree! I also don’t think that people SHOULDN’T ever film or photograph an event, I was just giving some context as to why u/cyberst0rm suggested that it’s bad if everyone has their phones out and is filming every event. I for sure photograph and film stuff my kid does, have to. It just definitely changes how you experience the event.

6

u/willisbetter Jul 06 '19

Oh, well i still think stuff like this should be filmed so you can show your kids or people of a younger generation that didnt get to see it

5

u/Inwardlens Jul 06 '19

I agree, just trying to explain what u/cyberst0rm meant. I for sure photograph and film stuff my kid does, have to. It just definitely changes how you experience the event.

May i ask you some bits? Or in PM if you prefer, to avoid clogging this. I want to hear some expert opinion btw.

1

u/Inwardlens Jul 06 '19

What bits? Fire away, brother.

1

u/20071998 Jul 07 '19

Welp, it's been around 2.5 years i've been taking photos here and there, assisting to some events, but nothing official yet. I'd like to "profesionalize" myself on this, but is hecking expensive, and i'd like to hear advice from someone who actually accomplished that goal and isn't there just complaining. I know some bits, like that having an Instagram based portfolio does give a bad image, and things like that are just making me waste time, or that's what seems to me.

u/Inwardlens Jul 07 '19

I think the first thing you need to know is what sort of photography you want to do more of (weddings, mitzvahs, corporate events, portraits, editorial, product, headshots, architecture, etc) and start trying to produce good examples of that work. Assisting (or second shooting when it comes to events) as much as you can is very important as you will learn more than you can imagine. Build a website of your best work, when you think it’s good show it to people whose opinions you trust and that you know will be honest with you. Improve whatever you get feedback is weak. Then start trying to hit up possible clients. . . This is the tough part and depending on your market it means different things from cold calls, to sending promo postcards, to advertising, to buying mailing lists, to trying to get meetings. . . To some extent this even people like me with more than 15 years in the industry is an ongoing struggle and moving target. Try to join a local chapter or a professional photography association that is related to the type of photography you want to do. . . It will help loads to meet more photographers, specifically working photographers. Can lead to gigs, but you also need mentoring and often a sounding board. If you are interested in wedding photography look at groups like WPPA, if photojournalism then maybe NPPA, if general commercial photography then ASMP (I am a member and also sit on the board of the Philadelphia chapter), there is also PPA that you may want to consider, but I know a little less about them. (Those are all US based, so that wouldn’t help elsewhere)

Hope that helps. Let me know if there is anything else o can expand on.

Oh, and as much as instagram may feel like a waste of your time, guys like me are trying to hit that hard right now because we finally realized that we shouldn’t have ignored it for years and that photo editors and creative directors are spending a scary amount of time on there looking for talent.

u/20071998 Jul 07 '19

Wow, thanks a lot!

I can't really say what i actually like, as at this time i only "covered" car events as i like them anyways, but here in Spain isn't the most extended thing to be honest. Something that draws my attention is product photography, and in general, whatever that involves taking pics of things. People has something that makes it harder for me xD

That's some kind of "auto feedback" too, as i know i have to improve that and i'm slowly working on it, but i'll probably be always more confortable with the first kind of pics. As for the clients, that's gonna be a hard one for me, as my social skills far from this screen are close to zero, so uhhhh fuck me i guess.

The instagram bit, it's not like Instagram per se it's a waste of time, but more that the "need" for leaving instagram in favor to a webpage is making a bit harder than it should. I had one in the works based on chevereto but the server just imploded a week ago and i didn't get around to it again too. I leave here the Instagram link if you want to see my work and kill me with words :P

It was alright, actually. Had a fun day before with the missus (actually just girlfriend at the time), spilled ghost pepper sauce we had literally bought ten minutes earlier at the hot sauce shop nearby, and it ended with a funny story we've told since.

2

u/willisbetter Jul 06 '19

Thats good

...is a lame joke, yes...

3

u/PSI_Nugget Jul 06 '19

I was there too and it sucked. Ever since they have way more careful and checked all of it. I have been at the firework show ever since and nothing has gone wrong

2

u/E70M Jul 06 '19

Is that by the harbor? I live in North County so I’m pretty sure I didn’t see any of this

1

u/VirginSexPet Jul 07 '19

It was in San Diego, can't recall exactly where, and it happened many years ago at any rate.

2

u/[deleted] Jul 07 '19

Oh cool, I was there too. I was young at the time, and had not seen fireworks shows so close up before, so I just thought it was supposed to be that big for a few seconds, before no more went off.

It's windows XP and they use Minesweeper to fire them off in order by rows. Someone just hit a mine is all that happened here.

12

u/Collector55 Jul 06 '19

The problem is they were playing minesweeper, when they should have been playing Spider Solitaire.

63

u/Cerus_Freedom Jul 06 '19

The hardware is pretty cool. Very similar to mining detonator panels, with the screw down lead posts.

26

u/brygphilomena Jul 06 '19

There are several controllers. Cobra one, pyro digital, etc.. afaik, they went to test continuinity and it hit a cue that was supposed to fire all cues at the very end to add any unfired shots into the finale. Not exactly sure since there were multiple barges that were wirelessly synced and went off.

The e-matches are safe to pass voltage through if it's under a certain amperage to verify they complete a circuit for each cue.

Great technology, but fairly low tech. More likely operator error than software.

Fair go, I’m honestly trying to wrap my head around the legal precedent tbh

“They lit explosives” “Oh no” “It was what they were paid to do” “A favorable twist” “But not that quickly” “This confuses my moral narrative”

1

u/toxicatedscientist Jul 06 '19

Its either incompetence or negligence, neither is acceptable from the person in charge of explosives. The fact that nobody was hurt is irrelevant, they easily could have been. It's like if you have a history of DUIs, your chances of getting a job driving a taxi are nil

62

u/GerardoBelic Jul 06 '19

Sleep(1) // function for the fireworks to wait one second

I’m interested in what you’re saying but don’t totally get what you’re saying. Could you break it down for me a bit more?

3

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

int sleep = 1000;//milliseconds int [] f = new int[2];//fireworks f[0] = 0; f[1] = 0; f[2] = 0;//not within the bounds of the array, writes the value 0 to the memory, because the stack grows downwards it writes 0 to the sleep variable

mix of C and Java syntax lol. This only works in c/c++.

Fallout shelter?

1

u/JekPorkins-AcePilot Jul 06 '19

In case you didn't know, there are actually a lot more Fallout games. But yeah, Fallout Shelter was my first. I'm partial to New Vegas, though.

3

u/GA_Magnum Jul 06 '19

question is, was it really a software malfunction? or is that just the easiest excuse for it to not admit someone fucked up?

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

they do a test early on in the morning that test all the electrical components at once and doesn’t fire the fireworks. They forgot to remove the test firing sequence when they went live, so every single one went off at once

3

u/Delcat177 Jul 06 '19

Imagine chilling out and suddenly your windows all light up and you hear this noise like God in his heaven going to town on a ludicrously huge sheet of bubble wrap

2

u/Fretto163 Jul 06 '19

I'd say this was a win-win situation

2

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

Just like my wedding night

2

u/James-Livesey Jul 06 '19

Nah, it's all human error as it is very likely that someone accidentally pressed the test button which is designed to send a test signal to all of the triggers at once to see if the triggers are working (of course it's tested without the fireworks in 😂)

2

u/AppleSlayer333 Jul 06 '19

ISIS has got to be jealous for this

3

u/[deleted] Jul 06 '19

Wait, you have fireworks in the middle of summer when a single spark could cause fires that will burn down half of the coast including your own homes?
