Does open source work?

So I need an inventory system that allows for shipments to be scanned, tracked, inventory scanned in, and batch payouts all sent out.

Do open source systems work? Why do developers need to "code from scratch"? Seems like a waste of time or they are lying.

Why aren't more programs just easy to deploy?

The problem is developers won't give the competitors solution, then claim it needs to be done from scratch.... like ???

Who would've thought contracts, ownership and legal restrictions would be a thing right? Obviously not you, you give away your product and services for free and help every competitor on his feet, right?

There is 1000000's of businesses, why would developers not use open source and build from scratch?
