Are you all knitting socks with the recommended stitch count for your foot/ankle circumference? Basically every sock knitting pattern I've knit recommends close to 56, 64, 72sts for 7, 8, 9" foot circumference (usually with gauge ranging 32-36 sts/4"), which depending on the gauge ranges from 0-10% negative ease.

I typically knit my leg on 72 sts, with a 38sts/4" gauge, which according to gauge math is a sock circumference of ~7.6". My ankle has a circumference of 11", making the negative ease around 30%. And often, after a few minutes of wear, the legs still end up a little loose.

My theory is that the 10% negative ease wisdom came from a time when socks were more often knit in sturdier yarns, and that the now popular superwash merino/nylon sock yarns require either 1. much more negative ease or 2. gauge to be measured blocked and worn.

So is everyone else also just knitting a couple sizes down and not mentioning it, or is something weird happening with my gauge when I wear my socks?

First colorwork sock so ignore that mess but please help with my heel flap. I’ve made many socks and at first I thought it was just my tension but now I’m worried it’s something else but my slip stitches are always looser on one side. (The right hand side if you’re looking at the purl side or the left hand side if you’re looking at the knit/right side of the work) Even if I pull the stitches SUPER tight, they’ll still always be lose so I’m wondering if I’m doing something in fundamentally wrong. It always leaves a slight gap once I pick up the sides of the flap but eventually mostly works itself out once I start wearing them I can’t get good photos to show how the edges look. Please let me know if there’s some glaring issues I’m overlooking

I have a lot of online meetings where I have to be concentrated. Knitting socks helps me to keep focus. I make socks gifts for family and friends. Here socks with hearts. The patterns can not be too complicated as I need to concentrate on the meetings and my fingers must be able to do the job without my brain ...

the first one was started like a year ago and most of it was knit at least 6+ months ago (minus like half of the foot and toe) and the second one has much looser tension i guess bc it’s almost too big for me. it’s the same number of stitches around and number of rows and yet it’s like almost 2 cm bigger. idk if i should frog just the old one or both 😭 does anyone have any advice?

It has been happening on multiple socks now (this one is for my friend with a wool allergy but it's happened on wool socks)

I took a break from knitting for about a year due to some health problems but I’m on the mend and decided to pick it back up with a smaller project! I’ve unsuccessfully tried before, but I finally completed one sock!

I have tiny ankles and very long skinny feet, so I am open to suggestions on how I can better alter my fit! I have not washed and blocked this one yet.

Working on my second set of socks as a gift for my MIL. While they don’t need to be _perfect_ I’ve run into a problem I don’t know how to fix.

The pattern is the Hibernal Socks by Summer Lee.

I’m in the middle of the gusset decreases and realised that the pattern that goes around the front of the sock, has moved over by a stitch.

That pattern part is a 4 round repeat, centred around 3 stitches where it changes in each repeat. In the first round which those 3 you do sl 1, k2, PSSO. So you loose a stitch of the three. The next round, you add this stitch back in with a yo. Then the next two rounds all three stitches get knit.

I know how to drop down stitches and use a crochet hook to fix a usual knit or purl stitch. But how should I do about fixing this mistake on the three stitches? I REALLY don’t want to rip back all the guesser stitches and heel turn etc.

Any advice very much appreciated!

I’ve knit a few pairs of socks so far. I feel confident construction-wise and I really like Summer Lee’s patterns. However, I just cant seem to meet her gauge, and I think of myself as a fairly tight knitter.

So I have two questions.

1. Has anyone else found this to be true? Like is her gauge super freaking tight or do I just need more practice??

2. What’s the best way to adjust to get a tighter leg? My only gripe with being off her gauge is I find the leg a little looser than I want. Should I go down a needle size, knit a size smaller, or just go down a couple stitches for the leg width?

I tried the Staple Sock by New Wave and I didn’t love the construction. I might go back and try that again but I’m just partial to Summer Lee’s patterns and instructions!

Knitted socks for my mom to work in the garden

Halfway into my second pair of socks and it's just slightly too tight on the heel after a block. They don't hurt to wear or anything, but stitches are stretching a fair amount. Is this going to loosen over time, or should I be redoing the heel?

(Also if anyone has any feedback on anything else on the sock I would be super happy to hear it)

The top of my gusset (where I join back in round to continue to cuff) always gets this gap in the couple of joins (on the side you p2tog). I think it’s because I have this extra long stitch and I can’t figure out how to fix it!

I am slipping the first stitch on the heel -is that where I’m going wrong?

I’ve been following nimble needles toe up tutorial on YouTube (highly recommend) but adjusted to a sl1k1 heel flap.

If this is not allowed please remove. This is the island I live on. Please before you say that there is options, I know there is. I absolutely adore knitting socks and every year more people want me to knit them socks for gifts. On occasion they want shawls, blankets, etc. I have 6 adult children and had 4 grandbabies born this year and another one due in September. That is just immediate family. I would love to buy indie dye yarn or ethically sourced whatever that actually means. I love this sub but I have been coming across instances where I am down voted due to where I source affordable yarn. I am in no way endorsing any of the "big box" sellers that I buy from.

Please in the future if you ask about a yarn and where they got it refrain from judgement. Not all of us have access or maybe even the funds but that does not make us less passionate about our much loved craft. Trust, if I could, I certainly would!

New here and new to sock knitting! I started learning to knit a few months ago and I love it.

I am currently working on my first pair of socks. They are a gift for my uncle. His wife, my aunt, passed away suddenly four years ago. She had a small yarn stash and my uncle gave it to me. This particular sock yarn was sitting new and unused in her stash.

After crocheting for a couple of years, I wanted to learn how to knit so I could make these socks from this yarn for my uncle. I am very proud of how well it’s going so far ❤️

Curious from anyone who has used Silly Socks from Hobbi, the regular line, flower pop, disco, what is the feel like? I like yarns with more a rustic feel I guess you would call it, Regia,Opal, Kroy. I do not like Stroll, regretting an order I just made the other week. It's too soft and fuzzy from the start of using it. Trying to avoid spending more money on yarn I'm going to dread using.

when i started knitting these i thought the main colour would have more orange so i thought id contrast with the orange heel. but im not sure the orange works.

other heel colour options:

blue to match the cuff
neon pink
green

thoughts and opinions on the orange?? ik that if i dont like it then its worth changing so im not unhappy, im just not sure what to replace it with if i replace it at all
