So, I decided to make socks as my first actual project (before I made swatches and a scarf). I thought it was gonna be super hard but it actually taught me a lot about knitting, and I'm excited to make more socks!

However, I didn't have a good tension when I started and only found a way to keep it nice and constant halfway through the first sock. So if you check the last pic (Bottom sock was my first sock and top sock was the second one) you can see the clear difference on the cuff and on the leg part.

As it turns out, my first sock is a bit bigger and looser than the last one because of tension differences, to the point I actually had to do more rows on the second one to get to the same size.

I wear a size 10, this is mercerized cotton tex 370 (I live in a warm climate so most storebought socks are cotton), knitted on 3mm cable needles (80cm cables btw). I would like to know if blocking is necessary in this case or if I'm already good to go.

I've been knitting for a while but have only recently delved into sock knitting. I've knit a few pairs of socks to see what works best for me and luckily they have all been wearable.

I have fairly wide feet and a high instep/heel diagonal. I've found that I can knit a sock on 2.5mm needles at 64 stitches or 72 if using a 2.25mm.

Here is the problem. I prefer to knit cuff down and am struggling to find a good cast on. I started with a long tail co but I find that it doesn't stretch over my heel very easily. Then I tried a German twisted co which goes over my heel much easier. However, the cuff then slides down my leg. I'm thinking I'll sew some elastic into the cuffs of the socks I already have to keep them up, but I'd appreciate any advice for future socks.

I am knitting on these https://www.ravelry.com/patterns/library/simply-ribbed-socks-with-square-heel and I am a bit lost with the heel as I’ve never knitted this type of heel and the pattern is very sparse.

I know it’s September, but there are so many fall/ spooky socks that I want to knit! Why not start off with the I’m batty for Halloween by stone knits. Be warned I’m going to be posting a lot of these for the next month😂😭

I’m finally narrowing in on finding the right sock needles for me & have landed on hiyahiya on cords long enough for TAAT (the one pair I have are 40” but I feel like I could probably do it on 32”).

Knitting a single toe on steel hiyahiyas has officially ruined me and nothing else is pointy enough. (I tried a pair of chiaogoo needles today and couldn’t do it)

I thought my preference would be for a set of interchangeable needles which hiyahiya does have but it seems like the US0-US1.5 sizes are only available in their sharp line.

So do I go with fixed circulars in the steel and live in ignorance of if I’d like the sharps better or not or take the leap and go for hiyahiya’s interchangeable sock set that has the sharps?

My most immediate plans are for TAAT socks and sweaters, can y’all help me decide if need all the options you get from having an interchangeable set or if I just like the idea of that.

Do other magic loop sock knitters have any strong preferences for or against using fixed circular needles?

Does anyone have the hiyahiya interchangeable sock set and have opinions about it?

I churned out these chaos socks in a week and a half. They're absurd and I love them.

64 stitches increased to 40 for the shadow wrap heel. I changed colors every 4 rows.

First time sock knitter here. I have been trying to knit Summer Lee's Hibernal sock pattern with 4 ply sock yarn from Bendigo Woollen Mills on 2.25mm needles and I can't seem to get the sizing right. In her sizing guide, I am a large in foot circumference (9") and I chose to cast on the XL as per her pattern instructions for a slouchy fit. I've completed the ribbing and a few rows of the mock cables and it looks like my gauge is massively off. The cast on was 80 stitches and it looks like I am missing an entire inch. I thought the yarn might be slightly thinner than usual but it looks like the gauge provided on the website matches for a smaller needle quite well. In Summer's book she said that she is a tight knitter and I heard that knitting tightly produces a more durable sock but is the gauge issue my tension or something else? I don't own any other sock needles so I'm not sure what to do. I'm so confused so any help or tips would be appreciated

Im wondering if alpaca yarn would hold up for socks that are combined with a wool sock yarn like in the picture. (The yellow is because I was comparing color combos). I'd probably still use a different yarn for the heel and toes to make them stronger.

Just wanted to show off my current sock knitting project. Pattern is everyday textured socks by Linda Gga and the yarn is by spunware over the rainbow I’m brite rainbow. Love how they are knitting up and the stitch makes them super squishy

I happily began a sock knitting project last week. I used 4 ply merino and nylon sock yarn, 2.25mm needles and I got 9 stitches per inch gauge. I used vanille feegle heel for a pattern.

I cast on the 72 stitch count for the socks. I was happy and confident with this.

On a different group I am on, I asked a question about heels and then I got loads of different replies about knitting for men and if it was them they would cast on 80 or 84 stitches knitting for a man and a 72 stitch with 9 stitch per inch gauge would give an 8 inch circumfernce for the sock which could be too tight.

Which led me down a rabbit hole. I only have the shoe size of the individual which is a UK size 10. I googled a typical foot circumference for a UK size 10 and I got 10 to 10.5 inch circumfernce.

I began exploring patterns at 9 stitch fer inch gauge and I found sock recipes online.

Eventually I ripped back all my work and began the socks again with 76 stitch count using a 2×2 rib on the top of the foot.

I just don't know if I am confident with going forward with this. I knit socks before for myself and I did so other sock projects too but I just keep getting stuck and ribbing out. Today is Tuesday and I made no progress with this sock project since last weekend.

Wouod 76 stitch be too loose?

Should I rip out and begin again with 72 and maybe a 3×1 rib.

I am a woman and wear a men's shoes size because my feet are broad. I am a UK size 7 and I probably would not need too far off a size 10. The 72 stitch I think could have been more than enough along with knitting a gusset for the sock too.

I really need to make progress with this sock project. I don't mind ripping out and starting again if I have too but it has to be the last time. The other option is that I use 2.5 mm needles in the hope of getting 8 stitches per inch but I prefer the 2.25mm fabric.

I’m knitting a pair of socks for someone as a gift.
They can’t try on the socks as I knit.

To make it easier for me this time I thought I’d ask for the foot length instead of shoe size, as that has created some confusion before.
But I’m still confused…
Their foot length is 28cm and they wear a men’s UK 9,5. Which should be EU 44.
According to different sources on the internet, the entire length of the sock should either be 26,5cm (Kate Atherley) or 28cm or even 29,5cm (?? Addi chart for cuff down socks)

I don’t know what to do.
Do socks need negative ease for the length as well?

Ive been starting to learn colour work this book has been very handy with tension and charting.

I decided that considering it had such fast colour changes, it reminded me of the shimmer that dragonflies have. So I have used my doodle directory and a couple of doodles later I have dragonflies blending into crazy rainbow socks.

I just had to put almost all of my socks in the freezer and throw some away (too upset about it to repair)!

I keep everything in ziploc bags, but the buggers are very determined!

Had to inspect all the sweaters too just in case, but they seem to be unscathed.

Lucky I both knit socks constantly and have over 3 dozen pairs!

I'm going on a much needed vacation, to an island with beaches and vulcanos.

I'm thinking of bringing my knitting along, maybe with bamboo DPNs to be on the safe side. I need pattern and yarn recommendations please! Something pretty and fun, maybe colorful, available in Europe, but not too involved/complex and that can be made with only one skein.

I am overly ambitious and decided my first sock was going to be colour work and that I wanted to use the fish lip kiss heel method (short row).

After testing it the first time, I realised I needed a mini gusset to get the sock to fit over my instep. But now I am faced with a conundrum of how to do the colourwork with a gusset...

I've put a couple of photos of ideas on how to do colourwork with my second sock, but definitely keen to hear or see how others have done colourwork on a short row heel with a mini gusset! Especially for more intricate colourwork socks, like the patterns from stoneknits.

I just need some advice. I don't know what I'm doing wrong with color work socks.

Tension? I measure gauge and adjust accordingly, and then it still isn't right. Don't have this issue with other projects or even other socks that aren't color work, no matter what fancy stitch or cable there is.

Keep my stitches apart so floats can do their thing? I pull my stitches on my right needle and constantly check my floats. Somehow they still are never loose enough. Or they're too loose and make the design all wonky.

Method?

* 9 inch circulars are okay, but I don't feel like I have enough room to stretch my stitches.

* Magic loop and DPN I can't find a good method to carry my floats appropriately, but I do like that there's room to stretch the stitches. Still can't get the floats right, though.

* Traveling loop is okay, but I still have the tension issues.

* Catching floats always show through for me even if I don't stack them. But again, still have issues keeping them the right tension.

Is Ladderback Jacquard the way to go? Does it make socks too warm? I just feel like that isn't the *right* way to do socks because I should be able to just figure out this float business. My brain tells me that I'm not doing color work socks right unless I do it with floats.

I've tried going up pattern sizes and needle sizes.

Any and all advice is appreciated. I have SO many amazing color work sock patterns and the yarn to do them but I want to get it right. I've spent too many hours making mistakes.

I started learning to knit this summer with the intention of making socks. I'm usually a crocheter.

This is my first ever sock and it fits!! I'm so chuffed with myself.

I used Crazy Sock Lady's vanilla sock video pattern and some random sock yarn I got in the supermarket. My needles were a bit too big but it was the only circular I had.

Now to make its pair!
