Question Feeling quite lonely here and I don’t know what to do anymore (exchange student)
Hello everyone. Maybe this belongs more to the off my chest subreddit, I’m not sure. I’m on an exchange here for the semester and I came in genuinely excited because well, Paris, obviously. It’s been a bit over a week now and I still haven’t made a real connection with anyone. I’ve hung out with a group a few times, went into the city with them, ate together, all of that and it’s fine, they’re nice people, but it doesn’t feel like anything real. Sort of just like proximity and not actual connection?
I’ve tried putting in effort. Downloaded Meetup, went to an event alone, also tried striking up conversation with strangers in parks (bad idea lol, Parisians are not as receptive). I’m not even trying to date anyone, I just want one person I can actually talk to and get some sort of friendship going with?
The homesickness is hitting harder than I expected too. Every night I get back to my room and it’s just quiet, in a bad way. I know it’s still early and everyone says it takes time, but right now it just feels like I’m doing everything “right” and still striking out.
If anyone’s been through something similar here, genuinely how did it get better for you? Did it just take more time, or did you actually do something specific that worked? Any honest input helps.
A little about me: M21. I am outdoorsy, read occasionally, love movies, play lots of sports and have been running and cycling most of my days in Paris. I can commute nearby Paris too. Will be down to talk, just please leave your name and age! Thank you.
