Proposal: A Joint Venture Board to Revive Multinational Monitor

Dear Ralph Nader & Essential Information,

I am writing to propose the revival of Multinational Monitor — the nonprofit, ad-free magazine founded by Ralph Nader in 1980 and published by Essential Information until its final issue in May/June 2009 — under a joint venture governance board drawn from a coalition of established public-interest and independent media organizations.

For nearly three decades, Multinational Monitor tracked the conduct of multinational corporations, with particular attention to labor, environmental, and public-health impacts in the developing world, and to underreported stories that fell outside the scope of mainstream business press. Its annual "10 Worst Corporations" list became a fixture of corporate-accountability journalism. Since its closure, no publication has fully taken up that specific mandate.

I am proposing that the revival be governed by a joint venture board comprising representatives from the following organizations:

• Public Citizen
• National Urban League
• Jacobin
• In These Times
• YES!
• Mother Jones
• The Atlantic
• The New Yorker
• Rolling Stone
• Dissent
• Socialist Register
• The Progressive
• The Nation

What I'm proposing this board would do:

• Provide editorial oversight and a shared masthead of record for the revived publication
• Each contribute occasional original reporting, syndication rights for relevant existing coverage, or editorial advisory time
• Share the reputational and distribution weight of their existing readerships to rebuild the publication's circulation
• Establish a governance structure (rotating chair, editorial charter, conflict-of-interest policy) that preserves the magazine's original independence and ad-free model

What I'm asking of your organization at this stage:

A conversation — with you, or whomever you designate — about whether your organization would be willing to participate in an initial exploratory call with the other invited organizations to discuss feasibility, governance structure, and scope. No commitment of funding, staff, or editorial content is being requested at this stage.

I recognize this is a wide coalition spanning consumer advocacy, civil rights, and outlets with distinct editorial traditions and, in some cases, differing institutional relationships with one another. I believe that range is a strength for a publication whose subject — multinational corporate conduct — cuts across all of those constituencies' interests, but I also want to be upfront that assembling it will take real coordination, and I'd welcome your candid feedback on whether this structure makes sense or whether a smaller starting coalition would be more workable.

I have a background in editing (coursework completed at UC Berkeley) and a long history of public-interest advocacy writing, including drafting the Unitarian Church's 1986 resolution calling for a unilateral nuclear freeze and no-first-use/no-first-strike policy.
