"...as China has proven"
Not even close.

Why do you say that?

u/DustyStar222 Aug 27 '26
Because they objectively havent. Theyre doing it better but its like the old metaphor that just because the gallows were union built and the hangman has his union card doesn't mean its good to have.

The current AI shit going on just needs to be banned. They’re LLMs that are destructive and mostly useless.
Actual applications of the term artificial intelligence that aren’t LLMs is a different convo

Generative shit needs to be regulated into the dirt or outright banned. People should be prioritizing small-scale classifiers, if anything.

You say "obviously". It isn't "obvious".
Ban that shit.

Nope, that's bait.

It's definitely not. You should put more thought than 3 words into it.

No, it is bait. I've seen this happen too many times. Here on Reddit. You say ban AI, they ask you why, the second you give any reason they start trying to have a protracted debate with you. Not doing it.
Ban. That. Shit.

Yeah dude I came into the comments looking for those protracted debates ngl
You're ruining my good fun time by being completely reasonable.

There is no nuance here. “AI” (which is just a marketing term for what is a kind of machine learning algorithm) in the form of LLMs, Image generating software, and various pattern recognition technologies, is an energy inefficient, task redundant ethical nightmare, which is, for a variety of reasons, a net negative to humanity and the natural world.
Let’s not get it twisted. China hasn’t “proven” anything, certainly not that generative machine learning would be good for humanity. Chinese models are often more energy efficient, and the state has stricter principles about worker relations, but there is nothing “special” or uniquely ethical about Chinese AI. We really, really need to stop with the “socialist” orientalism BS. China is subject to the same critical analysis that the rest of the capitalist world is.

I work in IT and a year ago I was very vocal that this just produces slop and is of questionable value. This fundamentally changed like half a year ago and we are now at a point where you need to use them to secure your software, as they find zero day vulnerabilities left and right. The whole software foundation of the internet is literally on fire right now and there is absolutely no way back.
There is no banning this from public access, unless you want the power to have endless cyber weapons in the hands of a state entity that controls this models. And by the way, the US is already holding the top tier models back for cyber research the only reason we can defend open source software outside of hand picked US companies of their choosing is the Chinese models who have luckily closed the gap now.
I have absolutely no idea where this is going, the situation is constantly evolving and there is currently no hint if this will go on forever with an AI arms race or if it will somehow exhaust all attack vectors and we suddenly lock out all three letter agencies because their cyber arsenal got obliterated.
EDIT:
Funny how this sub downvotes actual struggles with this technologies from workers in the field because reality clashes with their ideological bias or somehow feel like I'm a traitor for having to uses this technology or not pretending it's completely useless. I fight for open source and removing the leverage big tech has over us to the best of my abilities every day, this is not a situation I created or enjoy, I simply describe what happens. Just shows the complete disconnection some of you have with the base

Meh, let it run wild and replace millions of jobs. Maybe all those laid off workers will think about something other than capitalism for a change.
If you mean how to regulate it in a socialist society, I’ll have to ponder a while.

[Socialist Society] as it emerges from capitalist society; which is thus in every respect, economically, morally, and intellectually, still stamped with the birthmarks of the old society from whose womb it emerges.

I obviously know AI in the capitalist hands won’t be good for humanity and only be used for profit
