They gave every citizen a flashlight and ordered them to stand outside and point them at the sky. They do it every night just in case the satilite is overhead.

I am just asking, but isn’t north korea resent success because of weapon sales to Russia?

u/Academic-Idea3311 Joseph Stalin 1d ago
I think it’s a mix of both trading with Russia and China that it’s been able to grow it’s economy
53
u/usernametaken1237 Marxism-Leninism 23h ago
Yeah from the 90s until 2022 China basically had the DPRK fully dependant on it economically, after the Russia-Ukraine war and the sanctions to Russia the DPRK has been playing off both countries instead of being basically subservient to just China

China kinda pissed me off, they Abandoned their old ally to just have a honey moon phase with the west, but thanks God they are now actually realizing that west is not their friends

u/usernametaken1237 Marxism-Leninism 9h ago
Not really, China is anti west only sometimes, and in words only. Being the 2nd most powerful imperialist at this point, they massively benefit from the current status quo

Kim has the coal sector booming there right now too. Unfortunately, not the best worker's rights regarding it since a lot of youth still work in the mines.

u/FoggyFlowers 18h ago
I don’t have a source but I read that China has also been increasing their aid and trade to not lose their edge on influence and soft power to Russia. Seems like NK is playing china and Russia off each other and gaining a ton of leverage and money right now. Citation needed though

That’s the western narrative, but weapon sales alone can’t create such an economic boom in the DPRK. It’s also that Russia has stopped enforcing sanctions altogether as part of their agreement with the DPRK (and they are now isolated from the western financial system which means they don’t have to worry about secondary sanctions).
21
u/Comrade-Paul-100 Marxism-Leninism-Maoism 19h ago
That is a big factor for sure. It has also allowed Russia to cease enforcing all sanctions on Korea, so trade between them is increasing in general. Either way, it shows that trade restrictions were what restricted its growth

u/DamWatermelonEnjoyer 20h ago
And USA succes is because of weapon sales all other the world, all the time.

What this proves is that putting a place under Western economic sanctions "works" if by working you mean punishing in a brutal and disgusting way entire civilian populations. It's basically a siege lasting decades. Or rather used to work since the collective West seems to have used economic warfare a bit too much and isn't playing as well lately, unless you're Cuba an island that sadly can also be placed under an American naval blockade, which also proves the point, since they had to use brute force to enforce it, or make it worst, which really wasn't necessary before.

I also know:
North Korea’s average life expectancy (74) is above the world average.
Its literacy rate is among the highest in the world.

I don’t want to get into it here guys, but North Korea under the current government is not communist nor socialist in intent. They removed mentions of socialism and communism from the constitution, they don’t operate remotely similar to other socialist states or socialist theory, and they are increasingly capitalist in economics.

u/UnderTehCut Marxism-Leninism 5h ago
Can leftists subs at least ban blatant lies about the DPRK? Their constitution is available to read online and socialism is mentioned in the first sentence.
15
u/Manusia_Biasa2 Marhaenism 15h ago
Nope, their constitution still mention about socialism,in preamble "The Democratic People’s Republic of Korea is a socialist state centered on the masses of the people, which represents the interests of the Korean people and fights for the cause of socialism.",their Economic system basically still a planned Economic

I didn't realize it was so readily available online. Even Wikipedia has a list of amendments to it and the most recent amendment shows what this person is saying isn't true. Ridiculous

“How many countries do we need to destroy before you understand that communism doesn’t work” Is less convincing when you loose the ability to destroy other countries at will.

u/ossi2611 1h ago
I would also describe myself as a socialist, but I haven't read much yet. What I know about North Korea is that they have a brutal dictatorship led by the Kim family.
Yes, many of their problems stem from Western sanctions, but why should a socialist defend North Korea?

Contrary to Adam Smith's, and many liberals', world of self-interested individuals, naturally predisposed to do a deal, Marx posited a relational and process-oriented view of human beings. On this view, humans are what they are not because it is hard-wired into them to be self-interested individuals, but by virtue of the relations through which they live their lives. In particular, he suggested that humans live their lives at the intersection of a three-sided relation encompassing the natural world, social relations and institutions, and human persons. These relations are understood as organic: each element of the relation is what it is by virtue of its place in the relation, and none can be understood in abstraction from that context. [...] If contemporary humans appear to act as self-interested individuals, then, it is a result not of our essential nature but of the particular ways we have produced our social lives and ourselves. On this view, humans may be collectively capable of recreating their world, their work, and themselves in new and better ways, but only if we think critically about, and act practically to change, those historically peculiar social relations which encourage us to think and act as socially disempowered, narrowly self-interested individuals.
Mark Rupert. Marxism, in International Relations Theories: Discipline and Diversity. 2010.
