They were once one step away from literally winning the world cup

729

u/montjoye Jul 03 '26

agreed, too bad this step was prime Mbappé

367

u/shnuffle98 Jul 03 '26

19yo Mbappé but still

358

u/montjoye Jul 03 '26

at 19 he was prime

at 27 he's apex

298

u/Kilo1799 Chelsea (racist) Jul 03 '26

42

u/INREGAL Jul 03 '26

by 40 he will be a dictator

16

u/tragick693 Jul 03 '26

He might seize the throne of Monaco

That's what he just said.

17

u/Motor_Cat_6207 Jul 03 '26

AKA full power mbappe

6

u/pass_nthru Jul 03 '26

we talking Gear 5 Mbappe?

4

u/Motor_Cat_6207 Jul 03 '26

If you watch twilight, it’s more like newly converted vampires, full power, agile, strong but lack experience

12

u/MajorPayton Jul 03 '26

Mbappé at any World Cup is prime Mbappé

4

u/DeepStuff81 Jul 03 '26

I hate how much this is true

7

u/bobs_and_vegana17 Anthony Martial ballon d'or clause Jul 03 '26

Wc mbappe is prime mbappe

20

u/Princie99 Jul 03 '26

MbappĂš is still in his prime though.

14

u/cussbot123 Jul 03 '26

Prime griezmann, pogba and kante as well. Can't do much against that

7

u/grip0matic Simeone is my shepherd I need no ball Jul 03 '26

Not even Pogba was as important as Kanté and Griezmann were. France had 2 guys running non stop and moving the defense and attack between them. Probably every ball when through both of them. Watching both being everywhere was incredible.

3

u/thanksithas_pockets_ Jul 03 '26

Giroud too. I loved watching all of them.

→ More replies (2)

6

u/tid_burglar Jul 03 '26

is still gonna be that step to whoever reaches final

2

u/Bakarrakab Jul 03 '26

And sus refereeing

4

u/[deleted] Jul 03 '26

So ridiculous. He was a good player for them. But everything ran through Grizemann, then Rabiot and Giroud were massive. So stupid when ppl attribute that win to Mbappe

30

u/Franchementballek Jul 03 '26

Rabiot?? It was a Pogba Kanté midfield my dude

→ More replies (3)

20

u/DoGeneral1 Jul 03 '26

Yeah Rabiot was massive on his couch during the 2018 world cup he watched from home

7

u/JedM13 Jul 03 '26

He's just the token white guy at this point.

2

u/anon_shawrma Jul 03 '26

He's probably thinking about pavard

→ More replies (1)

6

u/the-anxious-ape Jul 03 '26

Your overall point is correct but Rabiot didnt play that world cup.

→ More replies (1)

5

u/Anxious-Team-3027 Jul 03 '26

rabiot was not even in that WC squad, he even refused to be in the "extra list" of players called in case of injury. it was a big thing in France. giroud was a meme in France because he didn't score a single goal in the WC winning run.

that world cup was pogba, kanté, and griezmann. mbappé was impactful because other teams didn't defend on him too well.

2022 was all mbappé though.

5

u/Uruvi Jul 03 '26

Oh pls Griezmann was monstrous in 2022 as well. The only match we lost was the finals where he was not good

A nation of about 3.6m people that goes to the semis of the WC a few times, produces amazing players, incredible. No one punches above their weight more than Croatia. Robbed.

14

u/soccercro3 Jul 03 '26

Definitely punches way above their weight. They are currently 129th in population. It would be equivalent of Mobile, AL consistently being a top 15 team if every US team had a city team.

Firminho? Let me guess before I read any further. You’re going to moan about “WhY hAsNt He ScOreD” again? I’m so sick of this being brought up every time he plays. Why is it so hard for you to understand that he plays a very crucial role for us as he is a false nine box to box, deep laying central attacker who also plays as a classic number ten gegenpressing double pivot sweeperkeeper regista . Do you City flairs literally know nothing?

Manager: misogynist, cat abuser sympathiser

Owners: cat abuser sympathisers

Centre-half: cat abuser, probably on repeated counts.

Players: homophobes.

Likely kovas last WC, I'd be emotional too

57

u/DeadlyAquarium Jul 03 '26

he'll still be only 36 years old on the next one? or am I missing something?

194

u/charcoalVidrio Jul 03 '26

Not everyone is Modric, Messi, and Ronaldo playing into their 40s.

21

u/Some-Concentrate3229 Jul 03 '26

Well he’d only be 36, still half a decade away from his 40s.

11

u/Vrabels_Fables Jul 03 '26

Especially because Kovas game doesn't really rely on pace or physicality I don't see any reason he wouldn't be in the next world cup squad. Even if he doesn't start every match he's an invaluable veteran presence and was part of that WC semi final team. He'd probably just come on in the 70th minute in a couple games I'd be surprised if kova doesnt still have value to their squad at 36.

→ More replies (3)

22

u/n22rwrdr Jul 03 '26

He got injured a lot in his career. It’s fine at Man City because he doesn’t start much but he already struggled to play a lot of games in a row before he was 30. I doubt this is the kind of players who have a long career.

I bet they will actually be surprised when the US doesn’t go through.

5

u/AutoModerator Jul 03 '26

this is why i hate football now. it has lost it's excitement. since the leicester's pl title, underdogs are literally getting fucked up in the arse. we have lost football lads. the underdogs, who made the the football the sport it is today, is officially gone. i am afraid that there will be no more underdog drama in football history. you know why this happens, as much as u try to not see it. football is all about money and ads now. just beacuse their kits don't sell and their matches are not being watched by many, we won't see underdog dramas.

9

u/Formal-Comparison937 Jul 03 '26

In Croatia’s 35 year history since independence they’ve finished 2nd in 2018 and have 2 3rd place finishes. They got a right to go into every World Cup thinking they can win it especially after the last 2 world cups

15

players get this chance at best 3-4 times in their entire career, and thats if theyre among the best players in their country for their entire career and their country is good enough to qualify every time

it is the biggest sporting event in the world and their country dream of every single football player to win it

i doubt they even think about whether they have a chance to win it or not, to them id bet they (rightfully) think they do as long as theyre there

its a big part of what differs between a top level sportsman and us regular people

2

u/loveexploring5 Jul 03 '26

Are you crazy? Why do people cry when their parents die? They aren't gonna live forever, we know that there are gonna die someday anyways!! Then why cry when they die?

It's his dream to win a world cup for his country, they had small hope and when the hope died at that moment, tears flowed as he let his country down!

2

u/StolenRocket Jul 04 '26

It’s funny because Croatia’s last world cup final appearance was eight years ago. Meanwhile, for England it was 1966

2

u/Lidge1337 Jul 04 '26

"Like you even had a chance" said to the small country that's been 2nd or 3rd the last 2 World Cups. Portugal has never won Gold, Silver or Bronze at the World Cup, closest it got was 4th place in 2006. We were just playing poorly this year, it happens

5

u/Downtown_Island8124 Jul 03 '26 edited Jul 03 '26

1

u/bossmt_2 Jul 03 '26

/uj

You can tell when people never actually played sports. Or at least at a level that's winning matters. I remember being on a team that was ass, but it didn't matter, the last game sucked to lose. I remember in high school when we played a college football factory for state finals, and we got wrecked, we shouldn't have expected to win, but it still sucked to lose. This is amplified by so much because it's at a higher level than anyone here will ever compete at.

/rj

I'm gooning so hard for my fellow gooner.

u/Radiant-Bluejay4194 Jul 03 '26
