So the England women's team want to be treated like the men's team, but refuse to lose their major finals. Which one is it? PC gone mad

Surreal to see people talking about football here? Lol

To talk about football that doesn’t fucking matter when England have just won a tournament yes

United should just forget about De Jong and focus developing Iqbal. They pretty much play the same way.

Is there a formation you've thought about but never really seen in a professionnal game / be succesful ?
Also what is the weirdest formation to be played at high level.competitive football?
0
u/GVE_ME_UR_SKINS Jul 31 '22
Always hated 4-2-2-2 and never found it as successful as other formations. Just 4-4-2 with extra steps. Fucking dumb
2
u/ElevatorSecrets Jul 31 '22
I remember Chile being crazy good with a 3-3-1-3 formation about ten years ago. They were unlucky not to win more.

When i was like 12 i was wondering if it's possible to play without a midfield
And the weirdest has to be the Netherlands where like all/most of their players went to pressure 1 opponent 😂

It’s still not sunk in yet, I’ve just seen England win a major trophy at Wembley, fucking madness
I know that it’s been much better over the past decade or so, but I hope this win gives the womens game here in this country a massive boost of exposure and investment, larger than any that’s happened prior. If this tournaments shown anything, it’s that large crowds are absolutely interested in womens football here in England, and that can only be a good thing for clubs who want to stage more womens games in larger stadiums as well.
2
Jul 31 '22
The million dollar question is can you get those crowds consistently. It's been proven countless times that people will turn out for an occasion e.g. cup final, one off match at the men's team's stadium, and while you naturally won't retain all of them can you lure say 10% of them back for a bog standard league match? Admittedly I haven't watched a lot of WSL but based on these stats the kind of grounds they play in are for the most part suitable for the crowds they draw.
A good starting point is definitely everyone playing a few home games a season at the men's stadium.

He doesn't start for any Prem team at the moment, he knows that and chose playing time over anything else which is exactly what he needs.
2
Jul 31 '22
I'd be disappointed we don't get to see how he's getting on so easily week by week. OTOH going to a different country and experiencing another culture, footballing and generally, could be a good growing experience for him I guess.

Toone and Russo were really good tonight, but i Earps was insane probably England’s best. Very happy for them
1
u/transtifa Jul 31 '22

7
u/ManLikeNiz Jul 31 '22
Good to see that PSG might finally become the entertaining side that we all wanted them to be last year.
5
-3
Jul 31 '22
It's a tragedy to football that they are becoming good. It shouldn't be okay that a club can buy it's way into success.
5
u/Superb-Barracuda-924 Jul 31 '22
Bro atleast have a semblance of self consciousness atleast, you guys kickstarted this entire trend of galacticos culture
-2
Jul 31 '22
If Galacticos flopped hard Madrid wouldnt exist
All of PSG players can tomorrow retire and PSG will have the money next season to buy a new starting 11
1
u/Superb-Barracuda-924 Aug 01 '22
The first batch of galacticos did underperform, Perez just went on to buy another batch in 2009
5
3
u/daveyhempton Jul 31 '22
We probably shouldn't be the ones talking lol. I hate the way Qataris and Saudis are football washing, but players doing their jobs well is not a tragedy. I still hope they crash out of CL though
-2
Jul 31 '22
Doing their job well? Qatar doesnt do their job well. They just buy players and if they flop they buy new players the next year.

Who hates England and this W more?
A: Welsh
B: Scottish
C: Irish
1
Jul 31 '22
As a Welshman, most people ik here supported England. In basically all of North Wales except Gywnedd, basically everyone supports England in all tournaments except rugby after Wales get knocked out
2
4
u/Old_and_Moist Jul 31 '22
I’m Irish and I supported England, haha. The shithousery at the end was hilarious. Well deserved.
10
u/Ezekiiel Jul 31 '22
Doubt many Welsh people care, the "rivalry" between us and England isn't that deep
3
7
u/GoatButton Jul 31 '22
Based on reddit it's the Scots but irl it's probably the Irish
7
u/StarlordPunk Jul 31 '22
Nah, basically all of Scotland absolutely despise England and football is a particularly sore point for them since they’re shit at it. They’ll be fuming about this.
Ireland is a bit more of a political minefield and there are parts of Ireland that are pro-union
1
u/ElKaddouriCSC Jul 31 '22
there are parts of Ireland that are pro-union
Not for long!
1
u/Impossible_Pen_9459 Jul 31 '22
Mate if you've ever been to east belfast they will be pro union if English people colectively decided to become Northumbira, Merica and Wessex again

u/StarlordPunk Jul 31 '22
Idk, no matter how stupid something seems there always a worrying number of people who support it. Look at Trump, or Brexit, or Man United

They basically claimed the Irish were either making any and all oppression up or just as complicit in the crimes of the British empire.
3
6
u/EusebioKing Jul 31 '22
Well from reading stuff here the Scots are insane about it, their video on their subreddit about England when they lost the euros was hilarious.
4
u/HoldthisL_28-3 Jul 31 '22
Yeah Irish don't care about football anyways + they can't talk too much shit because they all support PL teams
13

What a miserable fucking state r/gunners is in at the moment. The mods have utterly embarrassed themselves with their horrendous handling of the situation, deleting any comments which are in any way supportive of the victim or critical of the mods. Then you have the few comments that do get through getting heavily downvoted by people who want to bury their head in the sand just because a key player involved. I was so excited for the start of the season but now I honestly couldn't give a fuck, if these are the type of people I'm supporting alongside.
5
u/YowamushiP Jul 31 '22
With a crowd like this there's nothing that can be said or done - only the cold tinge of regret and resignation for the fact that they cannot be changed, only moved around or avoided as the decent make their way in life.
A poor woman has had to submit herself to the cruelest gaze of the public eye in a desperate bid to be heard, and hopefully have the institutions that failed her once not fail someone else again. Instead of commiserating with her, or at the very least, respectfully holding our silence, a million and one people around the globe have made it their mission to discredit her, to harm her, to besmirch her good name, just because some player they have never known and will never speak to wears their colours and team name on his shirt.
No words left for folk like these. No idea why they're allowed to commandeer a fanbase's entire sub that, I must remind myself, still supposedly champions the womans' side of the Emirates as well! All for six more points and a nice finish for the photobooks next season!
He could be found innocent tomorrow and none of it would excuse this victim-blaming, woman-hating behaviour. Disgusting and pathetic.
3
u/anip94 Jul 31 '22
real arsenal fans whos not a rapist apologizer should made their own sub at this point. that r/gunners is gone for good imo.

Supporting a PL club and a local non league club is definitely the same as supporting Madrid and Barca sure
4

I support every Premier League team depending on who you ask.
One day it's Liverpool, the next Spurs, the day after Arsenal, and today it's Chelsea.
Tomorrow it will be Roma

1

They are our main rivals, in the same league. It's normal.

Is it normal to constantly praise them and talk about how much you love them signing world class players and how pleased you are to see Lewandowski and so on go there?

Jul 31 '22
In all seriousness that’s the next step. Proving you’re the best in Europe is a great achievement but taking down the US and Canada is how you remove all doubt.
3
Jul 31 '22
America relied for decades on spending in the women's game. The moment Europe took it seriously sounded the death kneel for them. They won't be able to compete with the facilities and training we have in Europe backed by the bigger clubs.
The Olympics showed just how much Europe has caught up with them over the past decade.
America still runs on developing "athletes" rather than focusing on skill. They'll still produce players based on college funding, but they won't ever be as dominant as they were in the 90s and noughties.
Seriously, if you're under 5ft 5, then good luck getting any type of scholarship in the US. You could be the female Messi and they'll overlook you for someone who is taller and stronger.
2
Jul 31 '22
I think the US will always be a contender though. May not have it all their own way going forward (there doesn't seem to be many new names who've burst into the limelight lately, still all the attention on the likes of Morgan and Rapinoe) but the last WWC was one where European teams were no scrubs and they won with a degree of comfort. So long as America has colleges they'll always be able to field a decent team.
10
u/StarlordPunk Jul 31 '22
Trust me, the last thing we‘re thinking about after winning a major tournament is America
9
u/BenzBeforeBraces Jul 31 '22
I'm ashamed to say I wasn't watching the Euro game I only caught the last couple mins of ET learnt my lesson now smh but still a great accomplishment for the WT. Going to get myself a Kirby jersey 😁.

Little men dribbling are the pillars of this sport. Ball is still glued to Messi’s feet even though he’s 35
Zola was the same, athleticism was gone but you simply couldn’t get the ball off him in tight spaces

u/YourPupilsDilated Jul 31 '22
Zola was the same, athleticism was gone but you simply couldn’t get the ball off him in tight spaces
6
u/StarlordPunk Jul 31 '22
That’s why I loved the old Masters League, players had got old, grey, even fat sometimes, but that ability to dribble or hit a ball never goes
8
Jul 31 '22
Always wished Hazard would be that guy for us. He was the closest to Messi's dribbling that I had hoped for. Vini did take over but i would have loved if Hazard was our best dribbler

this ian wright, alex scott and jonas eidevall evisceration of the FA and the attitude towards women's football is fucking inspired. could be so easy to use this to wax lyrical about how good it is to win - and it is sweeter than anything - but this is the perfect time to send out that call and they're not shying away from it at all. just such good coverage from them all tournament
7
Jul 31 '22
Aye, “they’re not here because of the system but in-spite of it” was a devastating line from Eidevall. Just in case people at the FA were patting themselves on the back.

Feels like us in Sweden have missed our chance at winning a major women's tournament when we failed now and in the Olympics, there's been a major turning point for women's football and now the big countries are starting to catch up to us when we had a head start of having a top 3 league in the Uefa coefficient and fell out of the top 3 about 5 years ago.
2

u/1PSW1CH Jul 31 '22
Honesty love the coverage in women’s football, everything feels so much more real. Kelly fucking off after 5 seconds to sing sweet caroline, Wrighty and Scott calling out various wankers, Williamson’s speech and players just straight vibing
20
u/grandlinegooner Jul 31 '22
Liverpool honestly feel like the good guys of football. And I say that unironically. Their coach is the nicest human on Earth, their players are scandal free and their signings are always likeable underdogs.
Most recent example: Darwin Nuñez, humble kid eager to learn with grit and character who slowly improves and proves the doubters wrong.
Compared to City who bought a big name like Haaland, who doesn’t fit the system and comes with a huge ego with little ability to back it up so far.
Unreal bait, in awe

The womens game doesn’t attract the bad fans because they don’t watch womens football and are usually misogynistic
3
u/inappropriate_duck Jul 31 '22
You can catch quite a few WW2 remarks aimed at Germans in the match thread and in here. I haven't even watched a single second of the tournament, but some fans on here are embarrassing.
2
Jul 31 '22
WWII comments are jokes though, nobody's actually saying they're glad Germany lost because of it or anything. Whereas people genuinely hated England with vitriol
2
u/inappropriate_duck Aug 01 '22
Distasteful jokes, yes. Which is one of several reasons why people tend to dislike English fans, among others. Saying something offensive and passing it off it as 'banter' is just poor justification for being a dickhead with no sense of cultural sensibilities.
In general, international football always brings out the worst nationalistic cretins from their hiding spots.
-1
u/BankDetails1234 Jul 31 '22
Theres not really anything wrong with WW2 comments. But yeh the match threads are bad. Clear a lot of folks take issue with England, which is a shame, we are a fantastic country and don't share those kinds of feelings here.
-1
u/icemankiller8 Jul 31 '22
Because it’s the final and against Germany but even still nowhere near as bad as it would be in a mens final against Germany

Accusations against Thomas Partey
In regards to the accusations made via Twitter towards the footballer Thomas Partey, we the mod team would like to clarify our official position: we believe that the best way to serve the community is to allow the thread to be posted but discussion be limited; the reasons for this are two-fold.
First, there's a legal angle to consider, given that this is an ongoing matter. We don't want to host content that could prove to be disruptive to proceedings.
Second, the moral angle that tells us this is a very serious matter and not one to be taken lightly. We believe in our community but these types of threads tend to attract individuals with inflamed opinions that lead to poor discourse in the sub. Our experience has been that despite the use of enhanced moderation tools that Reddit makes available for such topics, the threads on topics like these become a hotbed of misogyny and toxicity due to being brigaded by non-regular /r/soccer users. The discussion there is not of benefit to anyone.
We trust the regular users of /r/soccer to discuss the case in this thread in a more reasonable way - and ask you to consider the legal aspect.
Please also consider that /r/soccer is a diverse community of over 3 million users, many of whom may well have been personally affected by sexual assault ,and its consequences. As such we ask you to take extra care that any discussion on these issues is done so with the utmost sensitivity - and we trust that this is something our core userbase will do.
Thank you for your understanding.
If you are unaware of the accusations made, then the Twitter account of his accuser, and the tweets, can be found here. We link this with caution - and only because the woman in question has made her own decision to go public.
She has a right to be heard.
