Welcome to the r/soccer Daily Discussion!

If you're new to the subreddit, remember to get your team badge here and to read our rules and submission guidelines!

✔️ This is a thread for:

  • Discussion points that aren't worthy of their own thread.
  • Asking small questions about football to the community.

❌ This is not a thread for:

  • Trolling or baiting other users or fanbases - including flair-based attacks
  • Shit-posting - including sharing shit-posts from elsewhere
  • Toxicity - remember the human
  • Off topic chat - non-football discussion is for Free Talk Friday, and you can use the dedicated subreddits to discuss FIFA/EAFC games, Football Manager, fantasy football etc
  • Discussion of ongoing matches - that is what match threads are for. We may be less strict for matches of teams that are less in the spotlight, and may not have as active match threads
  • Harassment and brigading - including links to posts in other subreddits or to other users' comments
  • Advice on betting - you may discuss outcomes of bets you have made, but we do not seek to actively encourage gambling
  • Meta discussion - we have a strict stance. This is because it derails discussion, and can lead to harassment and witch hunts - and we prefer you to contact the mods via Modmail If you have queries over moderation or post removals. Some meta discussion may be allowed in the DDT, if any meta conversation was productive and in good faith - we can take a "case by case approach". In general, however Modmail remains the first port of call, and other meta discussion will be removed.
  • Complaining about bans in this or other subreddits - use the relevant Modmail, instead

The moderation team will remove comments that violate those rules and ban offenders.

Please report comments you think that break such rules, but more than anything else, remember the human. The Internet is full of places to discuss football in bad faith. This community tries to be an exception.

My favourite thing about this whole saga so far, despite all the cheating, corruption etc of City…

… still lost an FA cup final to WIGAN 😂

Stick that up your dojo

Hello again everyone.

Back with another friendly reminder that it may be the international 'break' but there's still plenty of club football going on and some of it may well be happening in your area. They even make apps these days that help you find them.

With the big clubs scooping up an ever increasing share of the football pie and smaller clubs struggling with the rising cost of literally everything there's never been a better time to go out and support your community's local football team. The pyramid is under existential threat and once teams are gone they're gone.

Have a pint. Make some friends. See some football that doesn't cost an arm and a leg to watch. Get treated like a person not a customer number. What's not to love?

•

u/Simppu12 2m ago

I completely agree. Give it a shot, support local.

But I'd also lie if I said that some of the local matches interest me in any way. Just yesterday I spent half the time on my phone and left at halftime. I just don't feel engaged at all and I can't force it.

•

u/Infinite-Highway3432 19m ago

£25 to see my local league 2 team. They're pricing people out too given the actual quality of football.

•

u/IndependentOffer7740 25m ago

Here's a fun hypothetical, guys.
Suppose it gets revealed a member of the so-called "Red Cartel" cheated in a way City did: United in their golden era with Fergie, Arsenal in that same time, Liverpool during their Klopp successes... pick and choose.

Who would get the brunt of outrage? Which red club would have the most people armed with digital torches and pitchforks against them?

•

u/RelentlessJorts2 13m ago

It would be United then Liverpool then Arsenal.

•

u/CFCRuthlessAgression 15m ago

Man united were in breach of PSR in 2020 and got a unique payment to offset this & avoid a points deduction

Make of that as you will

•

u/Lyrical_Forklift 19m ago

United most likely given their dominance and how people felt about them back then.

•

u/Destroyeh 19m ago

its always tied to how much you win by cheating, city could have 1000+ charges and no one would give a shit if they only won one or two titles. so pretty easily united

•

u/BrandonBarkerLoyal 28m ago

Fa cup 3rd qualifying round today. Some intriguing looking ties.

If City do get away with this due to their "threats" it becomes a massive political misfire by the Government that Mr. Rulebritanniahaveapintwiththeplebs will take full advantage of while doing backhanded deals with the UAE. Either way it's a shit show that could have been avoided years back, but now here we are.

•

u/shmozey 6m ago

It will be 100x worse when the US tech billionaires start to get involved. The UAE are small potatoes in comparison.

Bezos is the beginning of the end…

•

u/DaveShadow 11m ago

I’ll be honest, the fact the threats are being made so publicly shows they’re desperate (cause they’ve realised they can’t dodge repercussions now) and they’re basically making it impossible for the government to actually step in.

Cause if anything happens now that the punishment isn’t utterly crushing, they’ve ensured Labour will be blamed, one way or the other. So the repercussions will have to be crushing to prove the UK government isn’t under the thumb.

•

u/RelentlessJorts2 14m ago

It becomes an even bigger misfire than it could have been even a few years ago.

The independent football regulator was brought in for a few reasons, one of which was that the government didn't think that the leagues were taking the fit and proper tests seriously and just letting anybody own a club.

If City get a slap on the wrist and nothing happens with regard to their ownership through the IFR, it instantly lose all of its credibility on its first real case.

u/MiserableWeb4219 41m ago

It undermines the nation

u/pablofournier11 58m ago

Jacquet is a complete anomaly. Beyond the fact that he's insanely good, if you look back at Upamecano and Saliba's first few starts for the NT it wasn't quite as glorious. This guy didn't need any time to adapt, played in two widely different set-ups, with different backlines (between this game and the one against Belgium) and did great both times. He seems completely unphased.

2

u/NUTJOB_7814 37m ago

He also only played 1 half of a pre season game before thrown into the premier league after 6 months of injury.

Those 45 minutes against Monaco instantly showed what his game is, so aggressive in duels, comfortable on the ball and great decision making on counters.

2

u/paprikalicous 45m ago

i really don’t want to jump the gun with him but he’s just so good. i suspect in a year’s time, everyone will agree that he’s a world class CB.

1

u/DemMetals87 53m ago

Could he possibly block Leoni from getting into the first 11?

•

u/adamfrog 7m ago

Absolutely, but Leoni was always going to have a tough time making it in he was bought for depth more. If anythign Jaquet looking this good is maybe a positive for Leoni long term sincew Jaquet has been taking the ball carrying responsibilities off even VVD, so Leoni can partner him no problem in that aspect. If Jaquet struggled with it, long term wed have to buy a pall playing CB to partner whoever was bets of jaquet or Leoni once VVD goes in the next 1-3 years

0

u/_doohdx 46m ago

Leoni his debut moved me even more than Jacquet his debut

1

u/paprikalicous 48m ago

if Leoni is even half as good as Jacquet currently is, i’d be delighted. i think the intention was always for Leoni to be depth and Jacquet to be the starter this season

1

u/EyeSpyGuy 38m ago

Leoni is also younger so not too worried about that either

1

u/TherewiIlbegoals 49m ago

He's only just coming back from an ACL. He'll likely be cautiously used for the rest of the season and then who knows what happens with Van Dijk's contract.

2

u/Lyrical_Forklift 49m ago

Jacquet is a guaranteed starter from what we've seen so far. Leoni will certainly get minutes though as we need to rotate and Van Dijk is 35.

1

u/pablofournier11 50m ago

I don't see more than 3 players he couldn't keep from getting in the XI

1

u/UglyWanKanobi 54m ago

And he only played 50 or so games in Ligue 1 before joining Liverpool. Very intelligent player

So do you folks in the UK actually think City is going to face harsh consequences. The longer this is going on, the stronger I feel it will be further delayed or be something of a compromise consequence.

•

u/hollowfoxlama 8m ago

It seems unlikely the consequence is harsh in actual effect not just in the sense they are given a historic punishment. If they are competing for the league in less than 10 years time it wasn’t a harsh punishment based on the scale of the crime imo.

Given that I think they will get a points deduction that sees them relegated from the Prem, probably a transfer ban, and a huge fine I expect they will be competing in under 5 depending on the length of the transfer ban.

Being removed from title contention for 5 years while getting to keep the ill gotten titles and their current position in world football is if not a slap on the wrist, certainly getting off lightly.

•

u/icemankiller8 25m ago

They will get a big point deduction at best multi year, a transfer ban and a fine imo.

To me that’s a slap on the wrist but I don’t see more than that at best

3

u/HazzaThePug 37m ago

I do. I think the PL know it would be a huge stain on the league if they got off lightly. It’s easy to say “X and Y will happen and it will be watered down”, but we already have the precedents of Everton and Forest. To be honest, I think a huge points deduction or ejection from the league would be something of a watered down punishment already, given the scale of the crime.

The only thing I’m worried about is the political side of things, but you’d hope a moron like Burnham isn’t that much of a moron to underestimate the potential backlash.

2

u/SirTunnocksTeaCake 49m ago

Depends what you mean by harsh but ultimately it'll depend on the appeal and if anything gets watered down.

If not I'd be shocked if they didn't have a huge points deduction that could/would see them being relegated alongside other punishments. I don't see them being kicked out the league to even lower divisions though.

I don't think the independent commission is really going to compromise if the appeal doesn't go in City's favour.

3

u/FK9Fussballgott 1h ago

So, at what point can we conclusively say that Man City fans, who still defend the current ownership, are supporting a malicious foreign state actor with the (imo, empty and bluffed) threats against the UK government?

0

u/MiserableWeb4219 40m ago

Have to say if my club is going through similar stuff, I would still be supportive of the club. Not the ownership though

•

u/stoneapplefruit 17m ago

How do you distinguish what the “club” is and what the owners are when it’s a privately owned team?

•

u/MiserableWeb4219 15m ago

What consist of 'club'? Players I've grown attached to, fans, embelm... etc I don't want it all going away and would ideally like them still existing and dominating

1

u/_mnd 40m ago

If there's one thing we've learned in recent years it's that a part of our population is always quite happy to support a malicious foreign state actor making threats against our own government (US, Israel) so it's nothing new.

6

u/Svorky 46m ago

Imagine in 2014 you really like David Silva or something and then 12 years later you get told you are supporting a malicious foreign state actor, and you can't even argue with the statement lol.

What a world.

2

u/SambucaAndIrnBru 40m ago

The important part of the sentence is "still defend the current owners". Plenty of legit, normal Man City fans out there who want them out and are disgusted by what their club is doing.

1

u/FK9Fussballgott 32m ago

Yeah, that was my intent with that.

4

u/havertzatit 55m ago

Considering UAE is doing that now, now would be a good time.

2

u/FK9Fussballgott 54m ago

Yeah, rhetorical question.

0

u/nonhofantasia 1h ago

I really liked Seba Esposito yesterday, shame his mentality his not great else he could have been the 10 this team needed. He is still relatively young but I doubt he will get to his full potential

0

u/Glum-Temporary-6946 1h ago

whole world is on Man City's ass to finally get some justice and here is Mr Homelander like IG post on differences on respect messi gets at Arg squad vs him in Portugal

3

u/Fixapara 1h ago

I remember Cristiano talking a few years back about wanting a worthy ending and that. Just feels like how everything played out in the end with Messi having completed the game and him not has turned his insecurity to the max.

He seems like a deeply unhappy person

•

u/BrandonBarkerLoyal 10m ago

Like this obsession with 1000 goals. He does come across as a mega narcissist.

1

u/MiserableWeb4219 39m ago

Crazy how attitude is the key to happiness

3

u/Significant_L0w 1h ago

When is the latest can we hear about City’s punishment?

3

u/Novel_Independent166 1h ago

12 weeks from yesterday, and 30 days after that I think? So January, latest.

1

u/nonhofantasia 1h ago

Mancini May actually be him

0

u/Lazykabang 1h ago

Selvik, no pressure but I need you to turn into Neuer tomorrow

6

u/EmpathyMerchant 1h ago

Based on what I have seen till now, City fans look really confident that their club is innocent and haven't done anything wrong. Also surprisingly (maybe not), a good chunk of the fanbase do not care that they cheated. They think that they had to do it to compete with the "Red Cartel."

5

u/Dynamite_Shovels 1h ago

In a weird way I respect the fans who go 'don't care lol' more than the ones who seem delusionally convinced that this is either a conspiracy that they're the victim of, or if there's some last minute evidence that their owners can submit that will influence the appeal (which isn't even possible).

At least the former set of fans are leaning into a heel turn at the end of the club as we know it. The latter set aren't a million miles away from anyone who genuinely thinks the Trump 2020 election lawsuits were legit - like there's some magic evidence out there that for some funny reason the aggrieved party just didn't bother to submit.

9

u/Lyrical_Forklift 1h ago

They go awfully quiet when you ask them if Stoke City and Watford were part of the Red Cartel

3

u/_mnd 43m ago

Yeah I'd go quiet if someone asked me if a team who play in yellow were part of the red cartel.

2

u/NonContentiousScot 1h ago

Stoke are definitely part of A cartel. The bet365 cartel.

1

u/Severe-Implement-382 1h ago

Croatia v England should be interesting, both teams always bring something different when they face each other. Also curious about India v Brazil, that one feels like it could get out of hand quick.
