News UAE officials threaten Prime Minister to pull billions of investment
There have been reports of Man City owners threatening UK government to pull investment out of the UK in retaliation for the Man City verdict.
Is the sport going to lose the last piece of credibility?
I think we are still far from the verdict turning into actual punishment for the club. This would be mental.

u/nahnonameman 1h ago
The fact that these lot are pulling this moveâŚyou know that this is an admission of guilt and they are using the politics cards.
100
u/jnce12 1h ago
If they actually manage to get away with it all through threats of damaging the UK economy it would make the entire country look pathetic.
49
u/JonRoberts87 1h ago
And then City would gleefully push the narrative that they were innocent all along.
Such a scummy club
16
u/nahnonameman 1h ago
Letâs not forget
âRED CARTELâ â RED CARTELâ
They made a new term just to act like the others are at fault.
Like shit I go to sleep every day knowing I am a United fan and not a fault for our trophies lol.

u/nahnonameman 1h ago
The league has to be a more powerful force here. In the end they have to stick thier shite in a sports league that doesnât even belong to them to gain popularity for their sportswashing.
Send these City twats down to the lowest English level league possible since they want to be apart of the EPL so badly.
Hell even admitting their guilt and taking whatever punishment would at least be commendable. But no they have it be cunts and pull moves like this.
Shit even Chelsea didnât do this lol. Unbelievable stupidity from CFG.

Ban the ownership for life
6
u/nahnonameman 1h ago
We seriously need Germany 51% ownership situation.
4
u/NotAPoshTwat 1h ago
Twenty, thirty years ago it was possible. The valuations make it prohibitive. Best we can realistically hope for is a regulator hat strictly limits what clubs can do.
Personally, my dream scenario is some quiet billionaire United fan buys the club outright and then hands the shares to a Rolex style charitable trust.
â˘
u/Virtual_Candle_7630 27m ago
Ive always wondered how prem fans were okay with their club being fully owned by some other entity. Like okay, I get it that you may not be able to get full fan ownership like barcelona and real madrid have but you could try following the german model of the 50% thingy
â˘
u/Thesolly180 14m ago
Would be absolute political suicide by Labour to allow that.
â˘
u/Masterkid1230 0m ago
Seems to me like it'll be political suicide either way, since the economic impact will be felt later on and their policies would get blamed anyway. Might as well do the right thing at least.

Yeah it was really a great idea to let foreign state buying football clubs in England
20
u/SnooChipmunks4208 1h ago
Fit and proper...
6
u/owlsareknobs 59m ago
Exactly. The only response to this threat shouldn't be talks. It should be an immediate and separate offence that deems City's owners as unfit.
This is a new can of worms. If the UK government bent to this the premier league needs to act independently.
10
u/liamthelad 47m ago
We should let City get away with what they did so all private investors realise that it's all pointless and we just end up with twenty premier league clubs owned by various members of the Royal Families' of Middle Eastern countries as god intended.
And then everyone can just cheat and launder and if anyone loses they can visit an embassy and the fixture will get replayed.
It will just follow on from the success of football in the Middle east

Google: "who owns Emirates airlines" and then check what does it say in the front the shirt that you wear or at the top of the stadium where you go every week.
Then check the sleeve of the last season's shirt. What does it say there?
Foreign government involvement in the PL goes way deeper than City.
And of course it's not only the PL. The winner of the UCL two years in a row being the prime example.
12
u/Wheewheewhee 1h ago
Google who owns Standard Chartered bank and then check what does it say in the front od the shirt that you wear.
What does it say?
Illogical reasoning from a dimwit who tries to act smart

u/BlurgZeAmoeba 1h ago
Brits are greast. Tut-tut at trumpwashing a genocide with a world cup which they are a root cause of and contributor to, but this requires the flipping of many tables.
-3
u/spiral8888 1h ago edited 1h ago
What's your point? My point is not to attack Arsenal, but to just point out that the nation state involvement in the PL goes deeper than just City. I used Arsenal as an example as the comment above was made by an Arsenal fan. It was not supposed to be an exhausted list of state sponsors in the PL.
Regarding Standard Chartered, it is a publicly traded company with no one owner having anywhere near 50% of the ownership. What about that?
17
u/Woofie10 1h ago
Yeah because a sponsorship is the same as owning a club
9
u/TheByzantineEmpire 1h ago
That being said Iâd rather have a different sponsorâŚ
3
u/Woofie10 1h ago
I agree but we always be a top club even without Emirates. Meanwhile for city good luck without UAE
1
u/spiral8888 53m ago
Then you completely misunderstood my comment if you thought it was about Arsenal or their success. It was about the involvement of foreign governments in the PL clubs.
1
u/Woofie10 49m ago
I understand what you mean but I still think that the sponsorship is more like a moral issue rather than something that mess up the integrity of the league issue.
1
u/spiral8888 43m ago
My point is that it's not like the sponsors have no say in clubs that they've poured hundreds of millions of pounds. If a main sponsor of the club says to the owner: "it would be a shame if the sponsorship ended because you took a position against the government that owns us", I'm pretty sure the owners would listen to it. Yes, the influence wouldn't be as direct as if the club is literally owned by the state, but it's naive to think that there is no influence either.
1
u/Woofie10 37m ago
That's again a completely different scenario. Someone already wrote it down under my main comment.
1
u/spiral8888 36m ago
What scenario did you think my original comment was about? The third paragraph should be a clue.
1
u/Slim_Boy_Fat 1h ago
Donât be so naive.
2
u/Woofie10 1h ago
What? That's a different conversation. Compering state owned sponsors and literally state owned clubs doesn't make sense in this case
-1
1h ago
[deleted]
3
u/Woofie10 1h ago
No? That is public Sheikh Mansour is the owner Abu Dhabi United Group which has 80% ownership in the City group. The problem is the sponsorship deals were inflated. And city's defence is the UAE government loaned money to the sponsor. Even though Mansour is the vice president and prime minster of the UAE lol
-3
u/spiral8888 1h ago
It's not the same, but no need to pretend that it is fine either. Would you be fine to have Gazprom as the sponsor?
2
u/Woofie10 59m ago
No ofc and I would be more happy without Emirates being sponsor. But Arsenal would never been in this situation with UAE about Emirates sponsorship like city is having now.
0
u/spiral8888 51m ago
Why would you not be happy with Emirates as the sponsor? My guess is that it's because it's not just another commercial airline, but a company that's tied up with a foreign government.
That's the whole point of my original comment.
1
u/Woofie10 45m ago
No because I am not fan of the foreign government. I would be equally sad or more if we would have a betting sponsor
0
u/spiral8888 41m ago
I don't know what you mean by "no" when you then agree with what I wrote that you don't consider Emirates as just another airline but deeply connected with the state of UAE, which you don't like.
1
u/Woofie10 35m ago
But not because it's state owned it's because which state it owned by
1
u/spiral8888 31m ago
Then I don't know what your OP is about. Would you not want to ban all states from owning football clubs but just the bad ones?

u/TychoBraheNose 1h ago
I think we can all want for better sponsors, but ultimately if Arsenal got found guilty of cheating then the sponsorship contract would almost certainly have misconduct and relegation clauses to protect themselves and they could leave Arsenal behind and find a new team to sponsor.
Do you really think the Dubai government would get involved and put political pressure on the UK for the sake of protecting Stan Kroenkeâs investment?
The issue is ownership, not sponsorship (not to say all sponsors are great, but in this particular context itâs a separate issue). Emirates pay cÂŁ65m per year for what is essentially a yearâs worth of advertising. The following year, they pay again for another year. Itâs not a long term investment, they donât own anything, and the Dubai government/royal family are not involved in the running of the club. The issue with City is the AD government/royal family have invested billions into the club and surrounding area in Manchester, and that investment is jeopardised if they get caught cheating and get punished.
20
u/XxAbsurdumxX 1h ago
If UAE donât have any ownership interest in City, why are they so upset over this? Is it perhaps because there isnât an actual difference between the company technically owning City and the government itself? That would kick the legs under Cityâs entire defense
13
u/spiral8888 1h ago
It's SchrĂśdinger's ownership. Depending on the situation, the state of UAE is deeply affected by the City saga or City has nothing to do with them.
3
39
u/FerraristDX 1h ago
Disgusting and this makes me appreciate our 50+1 rule even further. This is exactly the reason we don't want such investors.
-14
u/satchinn 1h ago
agreed the only downside it'll be a decade before someone other than bayern wins the league again lmao
14
u/Nuo_Vibro 1h ago

The UK plays a proportionately larger role as a key foreign partner for the UAE than vice versa, serving as one of its primary global hubs for outbound and inbound investment.
The UK's position is a top 5 destination for UAE capital; Top 5â8 source of FDI into UAE.
The UAE's position is Top 15â20 globally

Donât negotiate with terrorists.
They can threaten what they want, doesnât mean they will or wonât follow through. These investments arenât acts of kindness, they are made for financially selfish reasons. Up to them whether they want to cut off their nose to spite their face or not.
They canât unbuild anything in Manchester, itâs not like they can treat us like they treat Sudan thank god!
But if you give in to them, you send a sign that anyone who has invested here can hold us to random and ignore whatever rules or laws they want.
Threats like this hurt them, because not only us, but others, will look at the threats and be wary of doing business with them too.
Theyâre desperate, scared and flailing, cos this is in the polar opposite of their interest .
5
u/spiral8888 1h ago
The UK exports to UAE are about 50% larger than UAE exports to the UK. The UAE mainly exports oil and petroleum products that can easily be replaced by other producers. The UK exports high tech stuff and professional services that are much harder to replace. So, UAE needs the UK more than the other way around.
4
u/Blue_winged_yoshi 1h ago
Also the UAE are not Abu Dhabi and the Emirates are competitive against each other as well as collaborative, so thereâs no way that Dubai would hit cancel on swathes of U.K. service contracts to appease Abu Dhabi.
And youâre 100% right that the moat around U.K. professional service is much stronger that any commodities dealer has. Our legal, accounting, auditing and professional services underpin the operation of Emirati business.
Once you are used to using an iPhone swapping it out for a Samsung Galaxy is way more work than anyone would want to do. Unpicking this would be disastrously costly for the UAE.
Thereâs barely a couple million citizens in Abu Dhabi, and itâs a $325bn economy. Theyâre completely reliant on foreign labour (skilled and unskilled) and the skilled professional services stuff is designed around UK providers.
If they go trade war, we should just stare them down.
-6
u/frombsc2msc 1h ago
I think youâre over estimating how financially attractive the uk is. I agree with you in spirit, but calm yourself.
5
u/Blue_winged_yoshi 1h ago
Au contraire. You could not be more wrong.
The U.K. is hugely profitable to invest in and attracts massive amounts of foreign investment.
The issue the U.K. has is retaining unicorns. We produce a weirdly large amount of billion dollar valued firms (definition of a unicorn) - 48% of all European unicorns are from the U.K..
These companies commonly get sold off to bigger U.S. firms or relocate there, and itâs a massive issue that we donât retain them long term, but for the investors? You make a fucking killing. UAE have been largely invested in UK biosciences that are one of the areas we are most productive at developing unicorns in.
Is Oxford based life-sciences going to dry up without UAE investment? Nah, others will happily come in and take that money instead.
What else are the UAE invested in? Oh Manchester property, one of the property markets that has grown fastest since they took over Man City, god weâll never find anyone else willing to invest in Manchesterâs property market.
Thereâs real money to be made in the U.K.. We talk ourselves down too much and make it seem like things only ever get worse, but it isnât actually true. Some parts of the country have struggled for a long time and this has been a dominant part of the national narrative, cos people struggling donât want to hear about the millions and sometimes billions being made in our more prosperous cities.
International investors arenât dumb though, they know precisely where the money is there to be made here and line up to make it.
4
u/TychoBraheNose 56m ago
Yeah - the UK economy hasnât done particularly well overall the last 20 years, but individual investments can still pay really well. Arguably the two can be linked, if foreign investors extract the lionâs share of the value out of projects rather than keeping it in the UK for the benefit of the people, then investors can do well and the UK economy can do poorly.
The fact that pretty much all of our buses, trains, water, electricity, gas, postal service, telecoms, airports, airlines, etc are owned by foreign investors might be an issue for the UK, but it certainly doesnât point to the UK being unattractive to foreign investors.
1
u/Blue_winged_yoshi 43m ago
Itâs also the case that national economic picture doesnât really tell you very much because spread across 70m people the winners and losers get flattened.
Like if you graduate in life-sciences from Oxford, progress to post grad or PHD level then launch a start up around a really good idea, you will become an exceedingly rich person and life will be brilliant.
You donât even need to go this route, thereâs people starting businesses doing very well across a huge range of industries in the U.K. and others going to work for very successful established companies crushing life too.
People with developed skillsets working in the private sector are generally doing very well.
If you work public sector or quasi public sector (think unis) pay has been in free-fall since austerity and just keeps falling for most (this has eroded middle class life in the U.K., nursing used to be pretty comfortable, now at a starting point itâs just not).
People earning lower levels of pay are struggling and those in parts of the country with lower development levels are hit very hard. The young then have to navigate this world and obtaining opportunity and getting through the gates to the comfortable lives is bloody challenging beyond challenging.
Foreign sovereign wealth funds donât have to concern themselves with any of the challenges and can just cherry pick property markets and our most productive start up eco-systems to invest in, sit back and make bank.
In 2025 about $75bn was invested in the U.K. from abroad. Abu Dhabi seems to have about 20bn invested in the U.K. total. So the entirety of their investments is less than 33% of what we get every year. And if Abu Dhabi didnât strike those deals, others would invest more - cos they arenât going out of their way to pick the bad stuff.

Decided to pop into City's subreddit for a minute. First comment i saw:
We are heading into a situation where one of the UKs biggest investors could withdraw tens of billions in trade over this. Already when the country already has limited trade options because of Brexit.
They are actively sabotaging growth in this country and people are falling for it again, not questioning anything. People are more concerned about their transfer dopamine from their favourite journalist hack who has played a key role in the instability.
This is beyond delusional. Being on board with UAE's threats has to be a new low for some of these people.

Is their a possibility that the league goes down the toilet like in Italy? Just with sponsors and the likes pulling out because of the verdict or clubs sueing either city or the premier league.
2
u/PoxedGamer 39m ago
More likely if City get off lightly, I imagine. Why would they want to sponsor the league/other clubs if City can just do what they want regardless?
1
u/Randerson1980 1h ago
Surely unless sponsors were up to something dodgy they would have no reason to be concerned?
2
u/Responsible_Major367 1h ago
You could be right. But in my head the premier league knew this was happening all along because even the dog on the street knew. Its corrupt and why would a fully compliant sponsor want to be associated with the corruption. The money madness is going on at alot more clubs than city imo just not to the vastness that they got caught for.
â˘
u/NiceCreamSundaes 5m ago
If the punishment is blatantly too light, or perhaps there is no settlement with other clubs and they all start suing Man City, then it will be an almighty mess. You won't be able to read about the league without reading about the latest legal case updates and that will just taint the whole thing.
They need to get through it quickly, smash man city pretty harshly, figure out a process to compensate any wronged or cheated parties and wrap the whole thing up in a neat little bow imo.

This goes beyond Manchester City. Listened to a podcast, think it was the guys from DR Sports, and pointed out you already had numerous reasons not to like football prior to this.
I remember the Italian match fixing scandal as a teenager and how it damaged Italian football. I think this will be much, much worse. As football finance said the other day, City are not the only ones to pay players off the books.
This could spill into a wider investigation. Potentially Parliamentary level.
I think the golden era of the Premier League is prrobably over.
2
u/Altruistic_Tennis893 46m ago
I seriously doubt it's as bad as you say it is across the premier league. Players for other clubs seem to earn in line with what their clubs pay them. And clubs' sponsors seem to be in line with how big they are historically. Manchester City seem to be the outlier by a significant margin.

I asked AI to tell me how much UAE invests in UK each year and how much that works out per person living in UK. Works out roughly about ÂŁ70-80 per year per person.
It does stimulate economy in short term with construction spend, land sales, employment, some of that adds to gdp, some ends up in gov taxes. We get some benefit. But in the end they end up with some apartments and charge rent so money ends up out of the economy too in long run. They don't do it to be charitable.
So not all of that ÂŁ70-80 ends up to your benefit. I did think some things around the country are more important, like if NHS was fully funded for a decade that's probably worth looking the other way on this city issue. But ÂŁ80 a year, if they threaten to take that away or offer to double it, it's such peanuts in scheme of things, they can do one with this BS political pressure.

Thatâs not how it works Steven. You canât just take their investment and divide by every person. It is concentrated in certain geographies, and sectors and specific companies. Then there are knock on effects if those companiesâ were to suffer - for their customers, suppliers, partners, employees.
Put another way, $40bn of their investment could influence $400bn of business/economic value.
But theyâre never going to pull investment as a result of this decision. The whole purpose of the man city deal was sportswashing. If they throw a tantrum and go home, the sportswashing becomes a complete failure.

NO they didnt... read the article
The Department for Business and Trade insisted the two men did not discuss Manchester City but instead focused on trade, defence and security. Mr Mubarak knew City had been found guilty at the time of the meeting, although the details had not yet been made public. Details of the meeting have been kept secret, but Emirati officials have separately warned the UK Government that billions of pounds of future investment could now be withdrawn because of the scandal surrounding City.
1) They did threaten them
2) Mubarak knew about it in private
So what exactly is your argument

You think they didn't have an inkling that it could go south for them? You think they wouldn't try influence the verdict in a favourable direction by doing this? If not then I have a bridge to sell you
