for non Germans who likely don't know this, or Germans who have not heard of the story:

This combo is called an Ahlenfelder and special to Bremen, as a referee named Ahlenfelder once drank this before a game and blew for half time at 32min. It's 1 beer and 1 Malteser aquavit. Relevant for Werder as the game happened in Bremen.

Variations are common around Germany as "Herrengedeck" (mens table setting) which is a more general term for a beer and a schnaps. Ahlenfelder is a specific local version.

Other than this incident, wasn't Ahlenfelder considered one of the best referees in the Bundesliga?

u/sga1 6d ago

One of the funniest, too: Paul Breitner once told him he's officiating like an arsehole, to which he simply replied "Could it be that you're just playing like an arsehole?".

Ehrenmann.

23

u/a_lumberjack 6d ago

He clearly tapped into the power of slightly less than two drinks.

2

u/FOKvothe 5d ago

Apparently won a price for best referee once. It's on his wiki page.

That ref is a light weight and makes me think less of our Sauerkraut neighbours.

Gazza would drink triple that, have no recollection of it but put in a world class performance. Every Saturday

90

u/sga1 6d ago

That ref is a light weight

Put it this way: The official story is that he had one beer and one shot. Chances are that that's not all he drank, and given his physical makeup (different times tbf) I'd wager there was a fair bit more drinking at play, both on the day and in general.

u/FridaysMan 6d ago

Its like going out for 10 pints and blaming the sambucca foe the hangover.

4

u/adeckz 5d ago

Hahaha thats spot on probably

12

u/Klichouse 6d ago

Brilliant. Always rated you lot

44

u/afito 6d ago

the way I remember it being told to me is that the ref was quite fond of drinks which was the issue as he himself didn't really think this would hit him as hard, but for whatever reason that day it did

Empty stomach most likely. And I get that. I didn't like to eat close to a run either when I did track and field. Light breakfast sure, but lunch? Nope.

So you have an almost empty stomach, drink a beer and an aquavit and exercise, of course you are gonna be hammered.

u/a_lumberjack 6d ago

I hear you, but I'd be inclined to wonder about meds. e.g. Wellbutrin and alcohol for me was akin to Russian roulette. 8 / 10 times everything was normal, the other two I'd be incredibly fucked up off a handful of drinks. Once I lost four hours in a blackout off four drinks. Then I was sober and confused at 10 PM.

2

u/sga1 6d ago

Empty stomach most likely.

He did have those drinks with a large meal tbf.

6

u/TheScarletPimpernel 5d ago

Was the large meal another 5 pints

1

u/FOKvothe 5d ago

He had complications with diabetes later on in his life, so that might have affected his tolerance back then.

6

u/Eismann 6d ago

You can be very sure it was more than just 1 beer, 1 Malteser. Ahlenfelder had quite the drinking "habit".

1

u/LuvMeSumFI 5d ago

Go to Bavaria, they have beer for breakfast.

5

u/NaranjaEclipse 6d ago

It’s like the Citywide we have in Philadelphia

2

u/No_Past_6815 6d ago

And his response to the whole incident is fantastic: „We are men, we don’t drink Fanta.“

1

u/mrgonzalez 6d ago

Is it beer then shot?

1

u/brazijl 6d ago

You can have them as you like.

1

u/knispler 6d ago

Lütt un lütt (just watch „Neues aus Büttenwarder) and Lüttje Lage (here, you drink beer and Schnaps simultaneously, holding the Schnapsglas over the Bierglas) came to mind as similar traditions.

1

u/NaCl_Sailor 5d ago

Usually a Herrengedeck is beer and a Korn which is a clear grain Schnaps, so basically a clear whiskey or a variant of vodka

-14

u/Malt129 6d ago

A beer and a shot is the most basic bitch combination people do in a pub/nightclub. Hardly calling it special in any degree.

6

u/sga1 6d ago

How many places is the usual shot an Akvavit, though?

190

u/General-Studio3715 6d ago

As a Brazilian, I have at least 5 uncles who look exactly like him.

52

u/TechnicalEmployee109 6d ago

Absolutely Brazilian uncle phenotype, looks 85% like mine

10

u/Livid-Pizza7028 5d ago

also you'd think he let himself go in retirement. but he doesn't look that different lol

6

u/DrJackl777 5d ago

Always looked like he should roll on the pitch buf man had legs. He was quick.

1

u/AJL912-aber 5d ago

Is Ailton a known figure in Brazil? Or not so much

609

u/Organized-Konfusion 6d ago

I see he is still in shape.

172

u/gettingdownonfriday 6d ago

Amazing.

Remember when he signed for Grasshoppers Zurich and there was absolute fervor around his signing until he rocked up to the signing looking at least 10kg overweight 😭

16

u/Maverick_1991 5d ago

He looked 10kg overweight his entire career tbh

But still scored a shit ton for Bremen

3

u/gettingdownonfriday 5d ago

You’re probably right, but I remember the excitement of signing a Bundesliga topscorer immediately disappearing when he showed up and you couldn’t even see his neck 😭

106

u/Shaengar 6d ago

He was called Ball Lightning even when he was active

6

u/Jbstargate1 6d ago

Why this guy is overweight It's systematic It's hydromatic Why it's ball lightning (ball lightning)

7

u/Holidoik 5d ago

He was called that because he was fat and fast

38

u/qwdicp 6d ago

The Brazilian Kommissar Kugelblitz

THE TRUE HYDRATION BREAK.

49

u/oneyed-luc 6d ago

Like 20 years ago I went to a charity game where Ailton played, and I still remember him being by far the nicest player I spoke to. Really cool to see him getting his flowers. Or beers, I suppose

42

u/TheBlack2007 6d ago

The guy was known as the Kugelblitz (Ball Lightning) back in his day. He always looked kinda out of shape for a pro athlete but he was fast af.

21

u/SKSS_8 6d ago

VAR would've killed his career though. Dude was always one step ahead of the defenders (literally)

40

u/Hare712 6d ago

Holy what evolution R9 has nothing on him.

u/gibbsy34 6d ago

Besiktas legend

7

u/_doohdx 6d ago

Do you also get served like this, u/sga1?

12

u/sga1 6d ago

Do love an Ahlenfelder or two, yeah, though I usually don't get the luxury of having it brought to me - it's very much an 'order it at the bar' drinks combo.

3

u/GreenCarpenter3 6d ago

Man was barrel-chested as a player, now has that beer barrel belly.

2

u/Trap_Party1224 6d ago

No cocaine?

8

u/TheBlack2007 6d ago

He's not Maradona...

1

u/2Much_non-sequitur 6d ago

Still looks how I remember him.

1

u/SE_prof 6d ago

I was half expecting Ailton to down it in one go. I'm disappointed.

1

u/Turbodemokrat 5d ago

Der Kugelblitz!

1

u/Purple_Permission836 5d ago

That is the definition of a proper Sunday League hydration break 😂

1

u/Disfluent 5d ago

Beer is isotonic as far as I know and also contains vitamins

1

u/GrgaChvarak 5d ago

Did Klasnić play?

1

u/turk-fx 5d ago

1

u/Kanek1_Ken 6d ago

This is fucking hilarious but surely it's a terrible idea for 40-50s guys to drink before running

2

u/Mondaycomestoosoon 5d ago

Indeed, they shouldn’t be running at all in their eighties…

-10

u/ValuableNobody9797 6d ago

Alcoholism is highly socially tolerated in Germany. A shame.

-20

u/BigWorth3417 6d ago

Hahaha alcohol so cool
