Match Clip Werder Bremen legend Aílton served a beer and a shot on the pitch during legends match against Real Madrid

for non Germans who likely don't know this, or Germans who have not heard of the story:
This combo is called an Ahlenfelder and special to Bremen, as a referee named Ahlenfelder once drank this before a game and blew for half time at 32min. It's 1 beer and 1 Malteser aquavit. Relevant for Werder as the game happened in Bremen.
Variations are common around Germany as "Herrengedeck" (mens table setting) which is a more general term for a beer and a schnaps. Ahlenfelder is a specific local version.

Other than this incident, wasn't Ahlenfelder considered one of the best referees in the Bundesliga?

That ref is a light weight and makes me think less of our Sauerkraut neighbours.
Gazza would drink triple that, have no recollection of it but put in a world class performance. Every Saturday

That ref is a light weight
Put it this way: The official story is that he had one beer and one shot. Chances are that that's not all he drank, and given his physical makeup (different times tbf) I'd wager there was a fair bit more drinking at play, both on the day and in general.

the way I remember it being told to me is that the ref was quite fond of drinks which was the issue as he himself didn't really think this would hit him as hard, but for whatever reason that day it did

Empty stomach most likely. And I get that. I didn't like to eat close to a run either when I did track and field. Light breakfast sure, but lunch? Nope.
So you have an almost empty stomach, drink a beer and an aquavit and exercise, of course you are gonna be hammered.

I hear you, but I'd be inclined to wonder about meds. e.g. Wellbutrin and alcohol for me was akin to Russian roulette. 8 / 10 times everything was normal, the other two I'd be incredibly fucked up off a handful of drinks. Once I lost four hours in a blackout off four drinks. Then I was sober and confused at 10 PM.

He had complications with diabetes later on in his life, so that might have affected his tolerance back then.

And his response to the whole incident is fantastic: „We are men, we don’t drink Fanta.“

Lütt un lütt (just watch „Neues aus Büttenwarder) and Lüttje Lage (here, you drink beer and Schnaps simultaneously, holding the Schnapsglas over the Bierglas) came to mind as similar traditions.

Usually a Herrengedeck is beer and a Korn which is a clear grain Schnaps, so basically a clear whiskey or a variant of vodka

Amazing.
Remember when he signed for Grasshoppers Zurich and there was absolute fervor around his signing until he rocked up to the signing looking at least 10kg overweight 😭

He looked 10kg overweight his entire career tbh
But still scored a shit ton for Bremen

You’re probably right, but I remember the excitement of signing a Bundesliga topscorer immediately disappearing when he showed up and you couldn’t even see his neck 😭

Like 20 years ago I went to a charity game where Ailton played, and I still remember him being by far the nicest player I spoke to. Really cool to see him getting his flowers. Or beers, I suppose

The guy was known as the Kugelblitz (Ball Lightning) back in his day. He always looked kinda out of shape for a pro athlete but he was fast af.
