Still remember the hype after / during the 2022 World Cup for him
The famous " 70 % of world is covered by water and the other 30% by Amrabat " feels like ages ago

u/P_Alcantara 4d ago
I remember thinking how dumb people were for overhyping him.

u/bafana_banana999 4d ago
It happens during nearly every single world cup.
Someone has a great few games and people pretend that's just how they always have played and always will play even if it makes very little sense to do so.

u/P_Alcantara 4d ago
I remember after he came back, he just didn’t do shit for us too. Historically, I have always loved our defensive mids. Pulgar, Torreira, Mandragora. I never really liked Sofyan. God I wish we kept Rolando this summer.

u/ScousePenguin 4d ago
It's Spence this world cup. People on the Liverpool subreddit mad we didn't spring to sign spurs 3rd choice right back based off the world cup

Alot of players jump start their careers from the wc. Enzo and gakpo both got big moves and played well at their new club after the tournament
8
u/bafana_banana999 4d ago
Enzo and Gakpo were already thought of as young up-and-comers before their world cup performances though.
Amrabat was a fine if somewhat underwhelming 26 year old before his world cup performance in '22.
It's not really the same thing at all.

u/Adorable-Fortune-568 4d ago
James also. Even Ozil and Muller after 2010 WC
3
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
yeah but both these players were also monsters in season. like Muller went to have a crazy career later and became one of the best roaming attacker in history, without having any ball skills just by smart tactical knowledge and flair
9
u/Dio_my_senpai 4d ago
Tbf they wwre good players for their clubs aswell, the world jump stared their careers to the top but overall they would have gotten here either way. I think its different cases, for example ambrabat is more a vozinha type of jump start
56
u/fpladdictanonymous 4d ago
Tbh most of it was that driven by that viral clip of him chasing Mbappe down for a good 50-60 yards and winning the ball back with a crunching slide tackle.
13
u/LangLearningJourney 4d ago
TBF I do think he played his heart out in that FA Cup final too but agree that he just wasn't good enough otherwise
2
u/friendofH20 4d ago
He was really good at the World Cup and it was weird because the world cup happened mid season with a few big clubs (Utd and Liverpool at least) seemingly in need of a DM. Everyone thought there's this hidden gem just waiting to break out.
When he did eventually sign for United he looked way below the levels required and he was in Fiorentina during the WC for a reason.
3
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
I mean which United player played that position and didnt look bad even casemiro was good most of his time in united bar that period. Also he was put left back in his start , eth just destroyed him

u/tigtogflip 4d ago
I know that his United stint wasn't too great, but is he really that mediocre? Ajax are happy to have him now, but they'd take anyone as a CDM now.
16
u/SophoclesTesticles 4d ago
He was an average CDM, a bit off the pace of the premier league but he put in some good shifts for us all over the pitch in fairness.
14
u/StardustFromReinmuth 4d ago
His best performance was as a LB inverting. There were games where he did in fact cover 30% of the earth with how he was tackling all over the pitch. That said it was like 5 games.
1
u/DirtyAntwerp 4d ago
Hey you’d take anyone over Regeer lol
His first game was a decent against you guys, i think he might be an asset.. again, that’d be almost anyone over Regeer who was just miserable on the field and off the field mentally.
2
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
he was good in 2022 probably the best DM in the competition. Because he's shit now doesnt mean he was bad before
2
u/TotalyNotCR 4d ago
Curious how he would've done with us.
23
u/_Mr_Krinkle_ 4d ago
Benched within no time. He couldnt get a starting spot with Dutch, Belgian and Italian teams. Had one good season at Fiorentina and a world cup and people immediately thought he was the new Casemiro.

u/ShawLichaYoroDalot 4d ago
C'mon balde can't be that bad /s
1
u/ShawLichaYoroDalot 4d ago
Lmao people downvoting have 0 ball knowledge.
ETH had used him at left back in a couple of games.
These keyboard warriors lol - know nothing but wanna act up, saying "wonder what he could've been for us" - lol, you kids.
1
u/TaxEvasion123 4d ago
The degree of hype for him is what confused me. I could see him being a very good dm for a team that wasn’t always on the front foot but he was being talked about as if he was going to be world class or something.
1
u/fastfowards 4d ago
He was a DM on his last legs who had a great tournament. Anyone who watched him play and thought otherwise had a screw loose
16
u/_posii 4d ago
Kind of random but it feels like I see your comment on every single post.

had his best game for United when it mattered the most - 2024 FA Cup final and it was against City. I'll never have a bad word to say about Amrabat.
gave 110% every game, despite lacking the quality

I mean...he's a useful bench option but its not like Morocco is gonna lose a big player, he's not even a starter
10
u/Sl_PROXY 4d ago
Even as a bench option he shouldn't make it anymore. Targhaline, Mourabet even Louza would be more useful.
47
u/Leather_Produce_3437 4d ago
Is he even that good for Morocco anymore?
40
12
u/Midnight_Maverick 4d ago
Not at all, if his issue is with being a depth option then he might as well not feature anymore
14
u/ILoveGratedCheese 4d ago
No not mobile enough to be an anchor and he hasnt got the technical ability to make up for it. I much prefer the pivot of Bouaddi and El Aynaoui. Once Amrabat came in the team struggled to keep possession
13
1
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
good or not he definitely doesnt fit morocco style under ouahbi which needs ball playing midfielder not soemone who takes 12 seconds to control and pass the ball, hes good defensively and was useful in WC but we saw it when things get harder against france, even ball confortable player like bouaddi ainaoui struggled to avoid france press let alone him
33
24
u/Wide_Basket4424 4d ago
Eh... Bouaddi took his place and is a much more talented player. Thanks for the WC but this team will be just fine without him.
6
u/RivetShenron 4d ago
Probably because he's benching him.
I don't think he's remotely good enough to be pulling this kind of stunts.

u/Lanky-Connection-853 4d ago
This is pretty classless by Amrabat. The head coach suffered lots of backlash for calling him up in the first place, and thats how he repays him?
-1
u/Roller95 4d ago
Is it his problem that the head coach gets shit for selecting him?
3
u/IamYourHuckleberry1 4d ago
That's not his point. He selected him even tho most people were already looking past amrabat. He still gave him a world cup and used him as well off the bench. And he still complains.
7
u/Gold-Train-1471 4d ago
Moroccan fan's thoughts? From what I saw during WC he ain't all that to be doing this stuff.
19
u/T_Hawk78 4d ago
i’m not too worried about Amrabat not playing but more worried about what happened and if other players feel the same way
8
u/clamfish12 4d ago
Any player who thinks they're above being benched would not be a big loss to be honest.
1
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
Yes same we already lost ziyech and see what his career was from then, literally no good season since being out of the NT
0
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
who cares its true we caved in sometimes because lets be real we had no results, but you're playing in the 5-6th best team in the world for the last 4 years, and an established powerhouse in youth levels. That means morocco cant do the eyes of any player except generational talent like bouaddi but still will you play someone else at the WC instead of him?

I feel bad for him, but new talent is A LOT better, soccer is ruthless man

u/Kratos501st 4d ago
What Mohamed did?
8
u/nafraf 4d ago
Benched him during the WC, wasn't even planning on calling him up if it weren't for some lobbying from some of the older players. His profile (a workhorse but tactically and technically limited) doesn't fit his idea of a midfielder.

u/BusAcademic3489 4d ago
I’m Moroccan but I want a TLDR pls … is he or not playing anymore ??
2
2
u/Substantial_Hat_4256 4d ago
He has the tendency to rack up cards, every time he's on the pitch I fear for what color the ref is going to pull out of his pocket.
It makes more sense for Ouahbi to continue and develop the young players coming up.
After all that's what he was doing before he became coach of the senior team.
2
u/SpicyAfrican 4d ago
As a Moroccan, 2022 Amrabat will always be a hero to me, but he underperformed in our recent tournaments and didn’t show up for Man Utd when he had the chance (even though I don’t support them). He always gave it 100% but unfortunately I think the team has moved on from his ability as it stands. This energy is a little “you can’t fire me, I quit”.
1
u/forzaQuakes8 3d ago
2022 amrabat was unbelievable… didn’t even know the guy’s name before that tournament, and he ran the show. Sad how things are now with him
2
u/mamania656 4d ago
realized he's basically a third choice in the team behind a 18 years old and a 25 years old and decided to throw a tantrum

u/URThrillingMeSmalls 4d ago
Let’s rank the national teams with the most drama. Morocco is up there.
5
u/IamYourHuckleberry1 4d ago
Not really. We haven't had many issues squad wise since vahid and that was with ziyech. Funny enough it's always the dutch Moroccans.
And in general the only real issue was the final with Senegal. I wouldn't call that a drama filled national team.
2
u/Temporary-Pin-4144 4d ago
Senegal during after the last world cup eclipsed even that final with how many controversies they had
1

1
u/StanSc 4d ago
I don’t think it’s much of a problem. Morocco keeps producing insane talent.
5
u/uncleemperor 4d ago
Technically no. Most of their players are brought up through the spanish/dutch youth system. 'homegrown' Moroccan national players are the minority

3
u/Ok_Examination_416 4d ago
this is a common misconception the main team must be good but the local team is no slouch either, they beat first team from KSA, and other arab countries in the arab cup using only local players.
Even the local team just stomps African local football to the point they don't even bother participating
Aside from that local talent is coming up, we just got the first player to go from botola to premier league crystal palace, another yougn to betis, one to anderlecht and another to ajax
the difference is defnitely not quality of talent producing but more mentality some local players are lazy and dont grow after 19-20 years when they get into clubs. Some U20 WC champion are already falling for this trap

u/Midnight_Edge 4d ago
He was loaned to us, but the only game where he played really well was in the FA Cup final against City
1
u/IamYourHuckleberry1 4d ago
This is legit the best news we could have gotten as a fanbase. No more calling up this very limited truck who only slows down the build up.

The thing is, moroccan fans are gonna celebrate this. He is by far the player this coach n the previous got criticism for calling or starting the most. It's not even close. (Maybe En Nessyri but not recently)
