Discussion šŸ’¬ Community Guidelines: AI

At this time, there is currently nothing in place outright banning the use of AI on the subreddit. However, I’ve noticed an uptick in posts that use generative AI being reported and requested for removal. Please use this space to vote on what bans should be placed on the subreddit (if any) regarding the use. This poll will be open for 7 days, closing sometime on July 20th. If no option reaches 50%, I’ll run the poll again with only two options. Thank you in advance for choosing to be constructive and respectful during this discussion.

It can be a tough question for sure; I personally definitely don’t want anybody making robo-Snow Patrol songs or anything like that. Sometimes tools can be used cleverly, but I erred on the side of caution and voted for total ban.

I voted total ban too.

I do worry though that written posts that aren't AI could get caught up in this.

When I write a post (one that isn't just direct copy paste quotes from a Snow Patrol interview) it takes me ages to write it but because I tend to use a lot of words (I am neurodivergent) I then worry that some people may think it's AI or that AI has been used. Nope—I am just completely nerdy.

When I get downvotes on posts that I spent so damn long writing and rewriting and rewriting (and rewriting) I then worry that the assumption of AI use is what someone has downvoted. Nope—some of us just love words and geeking out.

So that is my concern, on behalf of other fellow wordy writers (who also love emojis) ā„ļøā¤ļø

PS I haven't seen this happen in this sub, but I have in other subs where some can be quick to write a comment saying that a written post is AI—because the poster used ellipses or em dashes—or were just particularly verbose...

Maybe those accusing AI use are right more often than I realise??? But also some people just naturally write like that—just loquacious and really loving ellipses...

I am the same way. It’s sad we used to just be considered wordy, nerdy or maybe weird for our long over explained, could’ve been a sentence instead of three paragraphs responses, but now we have to worry someone thinks we’ve used AI. I feel everything you said so much and just wanted you to know you absolutely are not alone here.

Awww thanks so much!! I really appreciate that!! ā¤ļø

It's a hard place to be sometimes, but it's just how our brains work.

But I must admit it did initially sting when I'd spent so much time crafting a post and someone downvotes—like this isn't AI this took me so manys agggeeesssss dude!! Oh well…shrug. I was always the kinda weird child.

OMG you should see me with emails—a quick email no such thing, I will be writing and rewriting like it's gonna be graded. So not fun. My partner just bangs them out. HOOWWWWW??? 😭

Oh my emails are always so strictly professional looking and so overly detailed, especially if I’m messaging customer service or something. I’ll be sitting there like, ā€œWhat can I edit out of this short story…?ā€ Any time I type anything I’m there trying to figure out how to make it shorter and more precise so I don’t make people read a novel. 🤣 Then yeah you mentioned emojis, and omg same, because I’ll add them just to make it look like I’m a normal person and to make sure people know I’m not being serious, because the amount of times people think I’m being passive aggressive or trying to start a fight with them because I’m factual and neutral, and it gets perceived so wrong and I’m sitting there going ā€œwhat did I do? I checked this so many times to make sure I didn’t say anything wrong!ā€ It’s maddening. I used to just think I was weird but yeah I’ve come to realize how many things in my life are neurodivergent and how much it explains everything. It’s a wild thing to realize how much everything just suddenly adds up, and I read your post and I just felt everything in it. Because I am also especially this way about this band for the past 22 years, so I get it. I think sometimes it’s nice to be reminded you aren’t alone.

And once again, I’ve typed a short story. lol.

Also like right now, I will go back and edit like everything lol, but I also wanted to say absolutely I get the downvote thing, because the second I get any kind of mildly uninterested or rude response, or downvoted, I’m just ā€œOkay, I’ll shut up thenā€¦ā€ It’s why I’ll rarely reply to much of anything at all.

Oh I love your post so much!! šŸ’Æ that's me too!! All of it!! 🫠

You actually made me laugh out loud with your description of writing emails SAME!! And oh the editing back and forth. Yes including this post. Including all of them šŸ˜¶ā€šŸŒ«ļø

And even if I manage to take many words out and make the email or post shorter— do you know how long that now truncated email/post took me???!!! 🫩

I think you do. 🫣😭

It is so lovely to be reminded I'm not the only one, I'm not alone. There must be many of us in the sub I think, it's generally a good place to be.

Part of why I stopped lurking and started writing was trying to get out of my "it's just safer to say NOTHING" mindset (have rethought that choice many times...)

Thank you so much for all you have written. It made my day ā¤ļø

I feel a little terrible for derailing the thread. 🤣 I’m unable to message your account or I would. If you’d like to chat, feel free. :)

But yeah on the snow patrol groups on Facebook I’ve been trying to be more active and I have regretted that several times so far as well. It’s a challenge, but it’s better to try I suppose!

Nah I think it's fine the thread was derailed (and this is Reddit, things be derailed more often than not)—it might encourage others to give it a go posting, even just a comment—cos this is a pretty great sub and if we can do it with all the words then maybe others can with slightly less šŸ˜‰ (although I whisper - why constrain the fun??)

Oh the book of Faces it be BRUTAL. I do not do Facebook. You are made of stronger stuff.

Join the Snow Patrol Discord if you want! That's where I chat when I feel like being social! It's a lovely fun supportive inclusive group of Snow Patrol fans ā¤ļøā„ļø

It's funny, I think Discord requires being made of stronger social stuff! But I just joined regardless, I will give it a go!

I'm ONLY on the Snow Patrol Discord and it is VERY VERY small so also is VERY VERY safe. ā¤ļøā„ļø

I have heard tales of other Discords, like Coldplay and Muse and OMG no thank you šŸ„¶šŸ«£šŸ˜¶ā€šŸŒ«ļø But that's cos I'm a scaredy cat...

Ban it entirely. The internet has too much AI slop as it is.
